@MrCumstein Maybe lol but saying its fits between snes and ps1 would be extremely generous, if it sticked to 2d it's games would have looked better than literally 99 % of its game focusing on pseudo 3d lol
@xboxmodder02 There are a few 8bit and 16bit CPU that could out perform some 32bit and even some 64bit CPUs out of sheer speed, just because its 64bit does not make it more powerful or faster. Here is The thing about emulation, Things that might not be able to be done hardware wise That can be made possible with emulation. Back in the Jaguar days there wasnt much software that would make true 64bit hardware stand out from a 32bit system or even a 16bit system.
if the jaguar was true 64-bit then it would have better graphics than the PS1 , which it doesnt.Notice how tempest on the jaguar looks crap compared to the PS1 version called tempest X.even the N64 wasnt even true 64-bit.if it was true 64-bit then how come a 32-bit OS like windows 98 could emulate the N64 flawlessly back in the day using a 8MB 3DFX voodoo card and 32MB of RAM and 400MHZ CPU.Real 64-bit CPUs diddnt exsist until the early 2000s.they throw numbers at you because of marketing hype.
@xboxmodder02 How many bits a processor has, as already mentioned, has nothing to do with one console being better than the other. modern PCs for example have been up until recently 32bit. & there performance far out weighs the likes of N64 , JAG 64, Dreamcast 128bit , etc etc. Even the 3DO 32bit was faster than the JAG. It was just poorly designed because it had no Direct Memory Access (DMA) so was crippled. & FYI as for emulation the 3DFX voodoo card you mention was 64BIT not that it matters.
@MGazT if you read up on atari jaguar history the phrase that was commonly used to sell the console "do the math" it meant that the jag was alleged to have 2 32-bit cpus 1 for sound and 1 for graphics atari nicknamed them "tom" and "jerry"
Also upon further reading the commodore amiga was used as part of the jaguar development kit , the amiga was a 16bit machine.
@SomeFluffer64 if that was the case then why could i run n64 games on a 32-bit windows 98 pc perfectly back then in 1998.if it had a true 64-bit processor then that wouldnt be possible.if you dont believe me google ultrahle emulator.
The graphics processors were 32 bit and the processor used as a CPU was a 16bit 68000 same one used in the Sega genisis/ Megadrive. It had a 64bit blitter chip and a 64bit buzz but because of the other processors the developers had to program games in 16bit . For 3D the hardware was not powerfull enough to do that much better than Starfox graphics.
The graphics and sound were great for DOOM on the JAGUAR they should of spend more money on developers then the only problem would have been the piece of shit controller to me that was the biggest mistake.
well just because it have alot of bit's dosent mean that is have better graphics, the jag could do some awesome graphics but it was made in 1993, and graphics was moving so fast that the hardware was old just a year later, ex: doom 1993 4 years later golden eye came out with full 3d models look at games that came out 2007 and look at games that comes out now it's not the same as in 1993 and 1997 so that is way I think that jag was just in the wrong place at the wrong time
Nothing worse than a bunch of idiots thinking they understand the bitness of the Jaguar. It has a 64 bit main data bus, uses 64 bit memory, and it's two main workhorse processors are truly 64 bits wide. The GPU/DSP are 32 bits and
are only there to instruct the 64 bit bus, Blitter, OPL. I've seen source for many Jag games and the real problem is two fold. Horrible development tools and the blatant overuse of the 16 bit 68000 processor. Now you know reality from a long time coder of the Jaguar.
underrated implies the system was better than what it achieved...that is NOT the Jaguar..the Jaguar was on OVERHYPED piece of junk that Atari wanted to shove up our asses as a 64 bit system when it couldnt even match the 32 bits system at the time...that is what killed it.. They should have try another approach a A LOT better games but damn that the 32X and the Nintendo Virtual boy are 3 of the worst systems ever to hit the market.
doom on jaguar used the sound chip to make lighting effects. this game alone was pushing the jaguar already. also it's not really 64-bit. that was just marketing. it's actually early 32-bit and falls behind sega saturn and playstation (let alone n64).
These do look like nice games, but it was supposed to be a 64 bit system! These look like either Sega CD games or 32 bit games, compare this to the N64 and you'll really see the difference
You've got to realize that this console came out the same year that the SNES was boasting that it had Starfox. I think we can agree that just about any of these games demonstrate that the Jaguar was quite a graphical powerhouse for its time.
I agree with most of that list, don't quite know why Defender was in there, it was a decent game but it was all pre-rendered and the animation was stilted.
Doom belongs in the list, wasn't the best port with lacking sound and some levels and all but it played smoothly which is more important imo.
I thought Atari Karts was a pretty good looking game, nothing revolutionary but the way the ground undulated was very pretty.
Also you left out World Tour Racing and Super Burnout, both great looking.
well, Jaguar was quite a match and even a bit above the other "32 bit CD games" of the era like Amiga CD32, 3DO,CD-I and etc, but well, nobody expected the sony playstation.
Everyone was trying to do most of the 3D tasks on the CPU, but then sony came with that fully hardware 3D beast, with innovate things like hardware T&L (yup, that stuff that made Geforce so fast), and that made PSX do 3D stuff 4/5 times faster than the CPU rivals.
Even Saturn using the two cpus can't beat the PSX GTE.
While it do act like "cpu instructions", they're actually doing T&L services using specializated hardware, instead of a long list of multiplications/sums.
And while they're not as fast as a modern T&L, they was quite fast for the time, taking around 18 cpu cycles (if i'm not mistaken) to complete a triangle transformation, while the same task would be over 80 on a software based solution.
I owned a Jag and am planning to start collection for it. The jag games I have played are the following: Kasumi Ninja, Checkered Flag, Missile Command 3d, Dragon, Double Dragon 5, Ultra Vortek, Syndicate, avp, doom, wolfenstein, blue lightning, vid grid, myst, cybermorph, bubsy, rayman, zool2,dino dudes, super burnout, val disle and zoop. Wolfenstein was probably the best one(great port) and kasumi ninja sucked but was fun and ofc rayman.
@djmick90 .Most of the people who bitch about the Jaguar have never actually even seen one in person, let alone to have played any of the games so take their "opinions" and file it in the trash. The system had some really good games and a lot of poor ports from the 16 bit era.
@djmick90 The Jag just had crappy development kits, and developers who didn't have a lot of money.I mean could you imagine the kind of SICK game Squaresoft would have made on the Jag, with its full 16 million color palette, fantastic blittering effects, I mean. The spells, character size, and music would have been stunning. If the Jaguar was used for the right kind of stuff
@djmick90 Bad dev kits, limited production cost and development teams plagued the Jag.
Imagine a Squaresoft RPG on the Jag. Full color, advanced sound and hardware effects, larger carts. The games would have been EPIC. The Jag was pushed in the wrong direction with crappy polygon based games.
Basically, it was too little too late. (I'm not even sure if all the game's shown here even were actually released -- at all or at least before the console was already dead.)
And even when the graphics happened to be decent from a technical POV, the games often suffered from other flaws like bad controls, poor art, missing BGM, monotonous level design etc.
That's what people are "bitching" about -- including myself, a once proud Jaguar owner.
The jaguar had alot of graphic power, but only a few games used what the jas was good at. I have a jaguar and got one back in 1994. The best graphic games for the jaguar are the 3d doom type games. @xboxmodder02 Please go to wikipedia and read again.
The jaguar has 5 processors, not just 2. And 2 of those processors are 64 bit.
Also the bus is 64 bit.
And the Motorola 68000 is not 16 bit, it's a mixture of some 16 bit parts and some 32 bit parts.
I've never heard of an Jaguar development kit for Amiga, but there's one for Atari Falcon and one for IBM PC.
And jaguar games don't run on development kits.

@xboxmodder02 N64 CPU has 93.75 MHz.
N64 emulators and PS1 emulators only were possible because of powerful graphics hardware acceleration on PC.
Jaguar emulation runs only on CPU due to the unusual 3D graphics hardware of the Jaguar.
That's why it took much longer for Jaguar emulation to become reality, because PCs had to have a much more powerful CPUs.

@johnjay6370 Doom on the Jag is pretty good but still only uses the 68k doesn't it?
Which would make sense since if it used the DSP surely more than 1 sound could come out at a time?
I suspect that if there had been enough of a financial incentive at the time a fairly competent quake 1 port might well have shown up too.
