I suppose the "Siemens 1924 Hearing Aid" intended use is to amplify the sound of someone or something in the presence of the user of the device. It is not a "radio" that receives a radio signal that then the device would decode into audio sound (voice of someone, music) for the user to hear, it's not a cell phone, or radio. But the lady is not talking to anyone in her presence . . . yet she seems to be holding a conversation. It's possible she's just listening to the sounds around her.

Charlie's grand grand grand grand daughter couldn't find this particular movie in her local library so she went few centuries back - what a big deal... :-) Of course now she is facing criminal charges inside her time for hijacking the time machine from the local police station... ha ha ha. Her boyfriend has the other phone and watching over the stolen vehicle :-) Guess what it is WALKIE TALKIE mate !

The lady is just sheilding her eye form the sun/movie set lights, if you look at the direction of the shadow this makes sense, I think this more believable than it being a mobile phone.

@bartronZ Uhm, do you generally curl your fingers when you are trying to shield your face from the sun...I would agree that it could not possibly be some time traveller using a cell phone in the past - cell phones require satellites and signal transmission towers etc - none of which were in existence in those days.  Nonetheless, we have a person definitely talking into some kind of device caught on a film from the past. Your explanation; however, is too glib.

All those who disagree with the idea of her being a time traveler have good points, but I am somewhere in between..... it could be anything she hold in her hand but her behavior, the way she acts is 100% accurate to everyone today who talks on the phone. Sure she could be holding a radio or something but why would she be talking to it? Silent movie, some one could be talking to her in the back telling her what to do but as we see on that video she is talking to that object as soon as she shows.

She is hiding her face or perhaps holding her hat in place. The squarish shape under the rim of her hat are her index and middle fingers curved inwards. There is no cell phone. Remember, this is a silent film: Chaplin or someone is off-screen giving her directions. Movie sets were noisy back in those days. He probably told her to stop hiding her face. This is not a time-traveller. It's a careless movie-extra.

hold up....cool observation, but if you can suggest this is a cell phone, it is also just as "off" that it could be a transistor radio as well, after all 1928 or not if it could be a cell phone it could just as easily be something else. which I doubt very much it is a cell phone unless that's some unheard of captain from star trek on the holodeck or on some temporal mission lol

I think it's called Frequency Bias when you interpret something according to things most prevalent in your experience. An observer in the 1950s would have seen something else. I agree with the other poster that it's probably a Siemens 1924 Hearing Aid.

Actually...it is a seashell from Gustov's Curiosities about 60ft from there. Seashells were common curio items and the shop was nearby this filming location.

@thegardener2004 if we consider what physicists say;[Time doesn't exist] Then in fact he is there at the same time we are here, so he could be on a cell phone there talking to someone here because it's actually the same time.I think it is a male,CIA going back in disguise to a place they knew film was being shot "live" so they could prove they were there in an inconspicuous way.keep in mind film was new, & it was a premiere not a film, so people were just walking by,not as noticeable.
