I would too; I would admit that freely; I've got to say I would have investigated the house too!! OK!! She was a little out of line there; you don't insuate MURDER!! I can see why hes upset; but you've got to forgive her; she spoke before she thought of what she was saying. Youth does that to you!! For shame with the eldest!!
oh come on this is a coming of age story! its a horrible mistake but she learnt from it, and Catherine is naive but innocent and bright and likable. don't be so hard on her.
It's not stupid that she stated her exact theory regarding the death of Henry's mother, but that she left the door open! If she wanted to sneak around, do it properly lol
oops...i think i would have just apologized over and over instead of going with the stupid story...poor catherine...and poor henry....and the lot of them...
He's older and he's tollerated and even encouraged her imagination. He just didn't realize she was bringing it into the real world. She's not experianced enough to not know when she should stop. She's actually spoiled in a way. She thinks she's clever coming up with this theory. It's not real to her until Henry is hurt by it. She hasn't tried to put herself in his position. She made a horrible mistake but that's what life is about. Making mistakes and learning from them is maturity.
I love how Tilney, even after she accuses his father of such a crime, he says in such a pleading, disappointing tone "How could you?!" He wanted so much more out of her...
She shouldn't have said anything. It's none of her business,if they won't tell her then that's so, but she has to go and investigate. I know it's exciting and mysterious, but she is quite close to Henry.
This adaptation from the book is very good and makes for a good conflict between the two, but it is a shame that Henry should be portrayed as having lost his temper with Catherine. In the book he never does. He calmly corrects her misunderstanding about his Father, and then when she feels unbelievable shame and embarrassment, he goes out of his way to comfort her. He never rides off in anger. The movie is very good, but it makes Henry appear extremely angry with her, and he wasn't in the book.
@serenitybee20 I agree with you in all but one thing. This isn't extreme anger. He raised his voice but he didn't yell and she's just accused his father of murder! A hanging offense. Anger can be a good thing. It shows how important a subject is to us but people mess up with the excessiveness of it sometimes. Then it can turn into abuse. This wasn't abuse. This was upset and rightly so. She didn't hesitate and kept going on! He's takes deep breaths and reasons with her because he cares.
OMG!!!! She srewed everything....!!!! OMG!!! She should've kept her big mouth shut...!!! OOOOO!!! Poor girl she had to think before saying any last comments..!!! Dx
Poor girl. After all those hints and all those stories it's not much of a surprise she jumped to conclusion, and then to embarass herself like that! and to someone she's in love with! I can imagine how awful she felt. The actress really did some great work there.
what an idiotic child...to go snooping about someone's home and then to infer foul play when the hosts have been so gracious. Very unbecoming. She SHOULD cry.
to spice things up, tillney's brother should have murdered Isabella and tried to frame the whole thing on Catherine's brother. then things unravel from there...
I can see why he'd be angry with her, for accusing his father and sneaking to see his dead mother's belongings. Curiosity is fine, but she went too far.
On the other hand, I entirely disagree with his statement. It is never possible to read too many novels.
.40+ ~ Ooooh that Catherine is a nosy little wench isn't she. Playing all innocent and light, but apparently prying into others business is okey doke where she comes from.
Yes, but she comes across an ancient laundry list, an old picture in a room that may have been forbidden because of a number of things and hears a teasing joke about the house being full of secrets and somehow, that adds up to her host being a murderer who killed his wife? Eeerrrrrrrrrrr.......
oh come on guys if her embarrassement hadn't been a little tragic it wouldn't be a novel.and besides the story is about how Catherine learns from her mistakes, how she realises that reality is different from gothic novels and how she learns about true friendship...
you forget that the novel/movie circles around catherine learning a lesson from her experiences... she might cry for fear of what he thinks, but she later tells her siblings that they should never let their imaginations get the best of them. clearly she realizes that reality is very different from novels. so i dont entirely blame her for what she did
Yea the Northanger Abbey is about how Catherine is naive and how believing in most things in books instead of reality can get you into trouble so it's not her fault! She's just young and she learns what she did was wrong!
Boy is she out of line. I could not imagine standing there listening to her persist in imagining crap about my family over the death of my mother. It is deeply offensive.
My mother died this past year, and if I'd housed a guest and shown every hospitality to have her then question to my face about whether my father killed her...
and there she sobs: not from chagrin, but because she worries what he will think.
I feel a sort of bond to Catherine. My curiousity and imigination has led me into trouble more times than I care to recall as well. Out of all the Austen women, I can relate to her the most I believe.

Oh, absolutely. He loves her because she's so innocent and naive, but this is the scene where he discovers the less attractive side of her personality.
