  • Go to school, get a job and you wont have to live on the government!

  • Am I wrong or are these people demanding that the govt continue to provide free housing to them? Is this not an attitude of entitlement? What's wrong with them going to work and paying for their own housing? I don't see anywhere in the constitution that citizens be provided free housing. These people don't own this property! Of course they didn't want it torn down, it was an enabler for them to sit on their front stoop all day at the tax payers expense. Very disheartening.

  • @christinmaria Think about man you live in a house and you are evacuated form an area tha\t is devastated your fortunate to still have a home, but when you return the government has decided to evict you and then demolish a building that survives a hurricane. To privatize the housing sector and make money, money for construction and money from the extortionate fees these unregulated companies can and will charge to make money from a fucking disaster. Your government gave them homes so it

  • @christinmaria makes sense they are still their homes. I never seen such a fuck up at the handling of New Orleans and this is a bigger joke. Think if the boot was on the other foot, you would do the same. And If it was your house paying taxes or not, If they can make money they will and wont care on shitting on you to do it. Its crazy, you dont have to agree, but it is wrong.

  • the reason why the tore the projects down was because they were the worst projects in america. record breakin homicide rates, dope fiends and cracc heads dyin in hallways, kids with no guidance and did i mention murders??the magnolia was the worst in place to live in america in the early 90's, had more murders in 94 than some cities have all year. real shit.

  • This sounds a lot like what is going on in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where the city coerced people into taking buyouts in the core neighborhoods. I am moved by the dedication of the people here. As a disaster victim I who has been threatened with eminent domain in a "presidential declared disaster zone" in an 'voluntary acquisition' and an AMERICAN I am OFFENDED by the POWER the federal government gives to cities who only have their eye on taking homes for their own gain. The world is watching.

  • They want to build apartment complexes and force people to pay rent of 800-1200 a month. The city was built to keep the blacks in projects and rely on government assistance. To keep them out their communities to let them self destruct. They were the eye sore of the city of New Orleans. Yes there was and is alot of riff raff but there were alot of good people in the city who worked and provided for their families and was denied back into homes they owned. It's a ShAME! Some things never change!

  • let people live in tent...

do u still allow sodomy parades in new orleans... that is a much bigger problem for that city....

  • @YAHWEHisperfect Go back to proposing to your sister

  • If public housing in New Orleans is like public housing in many other southern states, the housing was constructed on or near toxic waste sites. The demolition of public housing is largely an effort to destroy the evidence of toxic waste. The people of New Orleans need to keep a close eye on what happens after the housing has been destroyed. Look for excavation of toxic waste. Most likely it will be coal ash waste or incinerator waste.

  • New orleans dont want them back who doesnt understand this.If they have no homes they cant live there thats there whole plan .The plan for the future of the new New Orleans does not include poor blacks. The vision is for a high cost housing with a much better tax base. For the first time in history we see live the down sizing of a whole class of people who are now out on the street.

  • i dont see any problem with what they did to clean that up. It looks to be the best idea. why work when you can live for free?

  • There's no way you can integrate people with good jobs, with people with no jobs and no intent or means to find a good job... They will be more comfortable with people just like them because it would be like mixing apples and oranges.

  • I'm not gonna be to lovey dovey on the government now as the major problem with the construction of these new mixed income housing neigbhorhoods will not be able to support all the former residents especially in the low income bracket.

  • I agree. Mixed income = middle class residents. Not Lower income residents. Slowly but surely middle class will turn into the lower class and there will only be that and upper classes residents that will occupy the the U.S. since the economy will only get worse and there will be stronger storms, more crime, greed and malice towards one another. Its the sign of the Last Days. Jesus is coming to take all of his children to a better place and the others will perish in hell where they belong.

  • With the numerous mixed-income housing units being constructed in many cities in the US, our government is doing their best to stop the concentration of poverty that often is characterized with high crime rates, and unfunded school districts.

I would like to see how with private and public support how these mixed-income neighborhoods will do.

It's unfortunate that the housing crisis has stalled many of the construction projects.

  • sorry i appollogise for the comment below but i just really felt sorry for those people. this is against all human rights to demolish schools, homes etc

  • Its unfortunate that numerous amounts of people will be displaced from their former neighborhoods especially in these project areas, but New Orlean's projects are not the only ones being torn down. In big Cities like Chicago, huge highrises are all being torn down and being replaced with mixed income housing units.

We are all cynical of government, but this is where I feel the US government has failed in terms of housing and needs to start a new with innovative ideas.

  • The "Projects" or public housing was never meant to be an area with a large concentration of poor people, it was suppose to be a vehicle for social mobility. But because of numerous factors, racial tension, segregation, mismanaged projects, gangs, drugs, and violence, etc., almost every project has failed to live up to its billing and are never seen in a good light.

  • why demolition to public housing those innocent people have the right to live in their own homes. i live in great britain and i'm standing up for those people who has just got their own public property took away from them. this is just bull shit >:(

  • they are solid brick buildings! instead of using K as an opportunity to kick everyone out, why didn't they use it as an opportunity to renovate and then let people home? it's a waste of a building, waste of a moment, why don't people want to do the right thing??

  • Why in the hell does this have a tag under genocide?! Last time I checked, there was no ethnic cleansing involved. The federal government did not round up everyone who lived in the projects then kill them all. I understand it was the ghetto but the gestapo was no picking up tuckloads of people & sending them to concentration camps.

  • Genocide is a result, not an action. Carting people off in state busses, or carting people off in cattle cars is not in itself an act of Genocide. The question is where are are they now? How many have died?

Generationally, what is happening to African-American population? Last time I checked, the percentage of the population now stands at 15%. What was the percentage in 1928?

  • The African American population is way more than that in the US & in New Orleans alone it's 65%.

  • There was an under the radar report about vigilantes murdering & shooting black residents of New Orleans after the flood. It is on video, perhaps here on YT. The toothless backwoods beasts were bragging about it like they were hunting for sport. There is also a report which I do not know was substantiated or not, that there were 5,000 killed, murdered after Katrina as well. You will have to search that one out.

  • it's all true. I heard a report that the Port Street fire was set to destroy evidence.

  • ooooooooooooo amen sista

  • I was raised in the Magnolia projects. It hurts me to see them trying to take my peoples houses from me. just look at it this way. u have to leave your home for manditory evacuation when u come back home you cant because your house is locked up.

  • Taking the houses from you??? You are acting like you actually paid a mortgage on them. Get a job and try to do something with your life you ghetto m************. Oh, that's right you're "ballin" because everybody from Magnolia is a rapper who's going to make it one day. Stop sucking up taxpayer money as*****

  • i have two jobs and i am tryin to go to school, and all my life i have been getting put down by people like you. and on top of that i am taking care of my mother, father an brother. so before you start judging people u need to get your facts straight bitch

  • Rapping and being hard are not jobs....stay in school so I don't have to support you for the rest of your life

  • You really wanted to live in a place filled with asbestos? Did you actually enjoy living next to drug dealers? Have you heard of a little thing called eminent domain? That's when the government takes people's homes (Actual houses that people paid taxes & a mortgage on) for government use, that's worse. No one owned where they lived in the projects, the government tore down a health hazard. Would you have liked it more if they just painted the walls & made people move back in?

  • you missed the point completely...MANY of those projects are NOT SO BAD...and CAN BE RENOVATED...these projects have history...Have you ever been to New Orleans and seen these projects? SOME HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE AND WEREN'T EVEN FLOODED..but THEY won't let the people back in?

  • You are a moron. My screen name is a dead give away that I live in this city if you actually knew anything about New Orleans I live in the fucking 12th Ward of the city, by the way I saw the Magnolia projects almost everyday before they tore them down since they were so close to the post office off Louisiana Ave. Most of the freakin project flooded. They were in a horrible state before Katrina. They didn't want to let people back in because they were finally able to fix them with federal money.

  • MORON! Mortgage or Rent, either way its your HOME and when its GONE or you are told you need to leave and then government & beaurocracy do anything to keep you from coming back, including NOT REBUILDING & contracting the rebuilding of the city & regentrification to outsiders and coroprations- and does NOTHING to assist you in coming back HOME and having a SAFE place to live, you have a RIGHT to be pissed off! Why don't you take your TAXPAYER rant to D.C. ? That's whose taking TAXPAYER money!

  • Wow, you can tell whose NOT from New Orleans. The housing technicaly doesn't even belong to them. But hey! Let them live in moldy homes.

  • google greg palast's

The Big Easy To The Big Empty

  • I think Hurricane Katrina was created by the government

  • Not the hurricane, but the destruction of the Levies?

  • This subject is done. They have already destroyed the low income housing and are putting up gambling casinos and hotels. The people who occupied these buildings are now homeless, moved or living in tent cities. The rents in NO are way too high, even for section 8 housing. The jobs pay little and most are hiring illegals rather than local.

  • I agree that the people of New Orleans, especially African American Orleanians, have been screwed. So what can we as American Citizens do about it?

    VOTE?

The mass forced migration of this population is a violation of UN principles. Why isn't the UN speaking out about this?

(Or are they, and WE don't know about it?)

  • Like you, I don't know if the UN has knowledge of what is going on in NO, or that effect only relatively a small group of people, they don't consider it a crisis.

With the economy in this country turning sour, a large majority of people, black and white will find themselves in the same situation in the next two years. Perhaps a movement against the greedy and powerful will begin then.

  • Some of my advocate friends expressed that they "lost" this fight. I hope this video could galvanize people to find commonality and continue to fight against injustice and greed....

  • many people have commented on this video saying that the government doesn't have to take care of the poor. Which I can understand to a degree. Unfortunately if you want a certain standard of living in a capitalist society you are going to winners and losers. The losers will not be satisfied with losing because their survival mode kicks in and they will work outside of the rules, regardless of the risk. So that is the balance we try to keep, thus spawning the limited need of gov support.

  • I personally believe a healthy society should take care of ALL it's citizens, and I also believe neo liberal policies of reduced government services are leading to the US decline.

  • that sounds like a direct contradiction. Please elaborate so I can understand. In the first part of your statement you say yes to socialism and then turn right back around and say its the down fall of our society. ?????/

  • NEO LIBRALISM is an antique term used to describe a society's return to an aristocracy. It is not liberal in any way, but refers to the elimination of public services like health care, eduaction and housing. So, the effect of NEO LIBRAL policy is to create a subclass of people from whose destruction a profit can be derived.

  • Also, the void of public services creates a ready pool of volunteers for the Armed Forces. And war is very good for the business interests of the same group that believes Big Government is wrong. It's only wrong, if they can't find a profit in it.

  • Not everyone that is against Big Government is a proponent of war profits. That is an extremely misleading comment and only supports the divisive ideas and attitudes that have left this country with a disenfranchising two party system that has done nothing to address the problems of the common man.

  • By mentioning "NEO LIBERALISM" I mean to draw connections between issues which lead to some disturbing truths about "who governs us".... There is an organized thought behind a group of issues, and supporters of these ideas seek to divide and conquer their resistance.

  • Just wait till the next year or two when all of those who think they are so high and mighty BECOME the poor and watch the elite walk away with those TRILLIONS of dollars in bailout money and the dollar crashes and millions of jobs are eliminated, leaving them POOR & their children and grandchildren being made slaves through taxes to reward the corporate executives & politicians & central bankers. They will be in the soup lines too & whining about their home values dropping by 70%. TRUST THAT!

  • Its already happening to them, just not as severe. That's why money is the root of all evil because people who don't have any will take it and those who have money don't want to share it so it drives people crazy, fueling greed.

  • also, just like in Washington, DC , the plan was to get rid of the black people, i dont know how to break it to you, i will explain it if I need to, but I think, you just had the 'gears turning' in your mind and figured it out.

I found out from sources several months ago about this. But you're all so ignorant, you don't know what your leaders tell you. Can I remind you? rebel.

  • Right Wing Elitists believe decreasing government will lower taxes. What they don't say is eliminating government services increases the homeless population and crime. These same people who believe the government should not pay for education, but they believe the government should pay for jails, spending over fifty thousand dollars a year on each inmate.

  • but its the american way. its in the constitution. also read the founding father's advice and such. y ouwill see you have no one to blame but yourself, the-people-that don't want their house taken -------

  • Just freakin' HORRIBLE.... HORRIBLE...

  • Damn!!?!??! This video was posted last year? I feel so ignorant to this subject.

  • Lungyao1

The reason that you (and I) feel ignorant about this is because all of the main stream media in this country is owned by corporations that are doing everything they can to keep us ignorant!

But now that we know, what are we going to do about it?

  • this is just messed up...

  • just goes to show that the katrina floods were a plan

  • oh good.... bitch bitch bitch all we fuckin do

  • Well those horrible crime infested buildings are gone hooray!! People need to learn how to support themselves and do something with their life not cause problems with society and eat up wellfare checks I understand the elderly and the ill need assistance but young 20 year old men and woman need to get jobs and do something

  • i agree q

  • How they can get their homes back with welfare and crappy jobs...COME ON!!!

These people had roof over there heads before the flood...

    GIVE ME A BREAK!

  • the poor people of new orleans in my opinion are screwed.

i think if barack gets in things might be different.

someone vote for him because i can't......

  • N.O. ALLDAY EVERYDAY!!

  • yes martin luthers dreams have faded into oblivion. And kennedy. They were only killed for doing good.We the poor boost the economy. Our government caused the dep o recession yea.Gas is a factor.Another depression is coming.Git yer money somewhere safe people.

  • HUD needs serious change. What martin luther and kennedy fought for is lost.People still live in slums. What is hud?Hud is agovernment agency. They make slumlords rich at the expense of taxpayers. And the poor.Theres an actual law that says they can charge hud more no lie.Hud needs investigation!!Times how many on hud X 100$ a month.I'm no rocket scientist. But geez.Landlords are treated good.Tenants are nothing to hud.I live in a slumhole.740 a month would be 600.Martins rollin i his grave.

  • You people have no idea what you are talking. I work for a tv station in new orleans. If you ask 90% of the people living in public housing, they want public housing torn down. It is all these damn professional protestors down here causing a stir. By the way, nobody in this fucked up city realizes that public housing for developed back in the day as a temporary fix to problems not a solution. There are people in the projects who have been living there for 40 years. Get off your asses people.

  • Amen, icetrain.

  • Get off their ass and go to work in the eateries & hotels where the rich of the city will pay you enough to live WHERE?

How are people ever supposed to move if they can't save a cent?

Do you think the people who had jobs liked comming home to the crime & being told by the police that they would come out?

  • Bunch of fucking lazy ass people looking for a hand out from the state..!!! crying about being done wrong and they want a hand out so they can smoke there crack and get welfare checks

  • dumb ass people wanting to live in a mold house and want us to pay for there medical care because of there dumb-ass get a fricking job and stop looking for a hand-out.

  • The Housing Authority of New Orleans has a reputation for being one of the roughest and most dangerous housing authorities in the United States. It's unfortunate but many New Orleans residents would be willing to forgo affordable housing for the city's poorest residents in hopes that New Orleans's crime rate will dissipate somewhat.

  • It's All about the Real Estate - nothing more. It's a crime against humanity. Racism gone wild.

  • Some idiot said if they work, pay their rent or pay their mortgage this could never happen to them. It's called natural disaster sweety. Things happen and you never know what life will bring. These people lost their entire lifes worth of things in one day and you people expect them to build it back in two years. They didn't gain it in two years. I say get off your high horse and pray you never need a helping hand.

  • Some white people get it like the 1s in the video but the vast majority don't and I'm tired of trying to make them understand. They have a complex were they think they are better than the whole world. Well if being the greatest killer, thief, and lier on earth makes you superior then I guess you've won that title.

  • The people that are for the demolision of these projects will be singing a different story when these people are left homeless and end up in your home with a gun to your face b/c they have no roof over their head and no food to feed their children. I find it ironic for any white person so call black people lazy when that city was built off of our blood sweat and tears. You brought us to this country to do your work and we're lazy? White people are on some serious shit.

  • The government is not responsible for people who want to do nothing with their life people who cannot afford a regualr home and have a job of some sort do thank god this city has gotten rid of those horrible places all they seemed to do was breed crime and harbor people that wanted nothing more than to take from the government and do nothing "good" with their lives

  • Our city government is to corrupted. Tearing down the projects will leave many homeless. The projects should not go down until there really is a better place for these poor people or else they will die on the steets.

  • They don't call him 'Ray Reagan' for nothing.

  • they want free housing and a check from the state each month! Thats why there are more latinos hired in the states because they came to work and not to be lazy. Africans americans have the same potential to work and make a good living!

  • Most of these people paid rent!

They couldn't afford to live anywhere else because they were paid crap wages by rich assholes.

The latinos who came in after the storm were screwed too. Many of them found that their employers had called INS when it was time to pick up their pay.

  • why dont even nned politicians we only need cops and a civil code. politicians are tyrants who promise freedom and know and apply nothing of it.

  • thespokenfont is right everyone need to look at this point its true. read at top

  • The people over there that were forced out of their homes, are now in almost what you can call concentration camps , the same people that do security in Iraq aka black water and the like are guarding them. Take a good look at this video and others like it ladies and gentlemen ,for this is your future. And cry as you may , the Elite of this world will be laughing at you , just as you laugh at the people in this video.

  • Dude... Who ARE you? You're sounding more and more like a rambling crackpot conspiracy theorist. Please explain how "the same thing can happen" to me if I'm paying rent or owning a home of my own? If the government PAYS pays for your house, they can MOVE you if they so desire. (no NOLA pun intended)

  • uhh Dude, like I said it can happen to you..The Process of Eminent Domain. The government attempts to negotiate the purchase of the property for fair value. If the owner does not wish to sell, the government files a court action to exercise eminent domain, and serves or publishes notice of the hearing as required by law.Recently there has been growing concern about the with abuses in this process by the government

  • Admittedly, there are rare cases where the government excercises eminent domain. But you have to concede that this is certainly NOT THE CASE HERE. This is property that the government ALREADY OWNS and people are living there under PUBLIC ASSISTANCE. I'm not sure how you make the leap from the renovation of a public housing development to seizure under eminent domain. (That's quite a leap.)

  • in reality and in a free world political goverment dosent own shit! natural law dictates land belongs to the people of god not the self appropriating political fucking tyrants of eminent domain and the white house of scum.

  • Like Bob Marley said... "Me now, you later"

  • lol. you folks better wake up , this happened to both poor and the middle income folks out there. Its all part of something bigger , and until the same thing happens to you , and it very well may, only then will you feel the pain that those people are feeling. America is changing, and its new blue print , doesnt include you.

  • Tear the Projects down.

  • Not sure what to think about this video.

I recently moved to New Orleans. I am amazed by the racism here, so I don't doubt the claims others have put down here, but I think I can understand why HANO wants to demolish the buildings as well. I would like to believe that the people working at such an organization have helping people as their top priority. Can someone send me an insightful news article or fact sheet that will help me to make up my own mind on what is happening here.

  • i visted there for xmas and new years there is raseisum here!!

  • There is racism everywhere!

  • Pleae don't generalize on the racial climate or "raseisum" [sic] in NOLA without living there more than "recently" or just visiting. Thank you.

  • I'm from New Orleans!!

  • Wasn't directing comment to you, icloud... Was directing it towards the "recent" transplant and the Xmas visitor above.

  • Oh, sorry!

  • People of all races and nationality are comming to the USA. They are going to buy houses where all those projects stood. You all can cry and whine to white people all you want. There are plenty of non-whites (including blacks) that want these turd holes destroyed.

  • Let's talk about taxpayer subsidies. Major corporations (Chase, Citibank, etc) all get them. They are encouraged to move to certain states, and are given tax incentives. Further, suburban Americans get them (housing credits, child credits, etc). But whenever a Black person seeks similar benefits, racists come out the woodwork. Secondly, New Orleans is surely eliminating Brown residents living quarters. Our world is racist, but we are one FAMILY. Rock on Obama & Edwards!

  • Uhm. Suburban means white? Projects means black? Ok... Im just trying to get my mind around what you just said. YOU sir are racist. It dosent matter that the govt is paying for housing for these people. It only matters that their skin color is black. HAH! "brown residents living quarters" <---Taxpayer funded housing. Housing projects are being torn down EVERYWHERE! You call it racist, but no one said "hey lets find some black people and fuck their shit up!"

  • The projects were originally meant as temporary housing anyway. The idea was for young people and people who were struggling to get by to live with government rent assistance until they got on their feet. They were NOT built as permanant housing quarters for brown people. The plan didn't work as many families just stayed there instead of trying to better themselves, and the buildings and neighborhoods are now deadly rat-holes. They need to go. The plan was a failure.

  • Why couldn't people "get on their feet"?

Could it be that the wealthy business owners in the city pay them shit wages?

Where are people who made $7/hr supposed to live?

  • I just cant get enough of this video. I love watching these people all pissed off. ROFLMAO@!

  • I might have to look at all these new developments when they are finished. I would love to take one of these peoples homes. I would laugh my ass off.

  • Stop. Has anyone in these videos, in these comments, in politics, been able to put forth one solution? All I hear is bitching. No one has a good idea. They never talk about specifics. Only that they dont like whats going on. Protest protest protest. You will never be happy. lol

  • replace all leaders with 3rd party candidates, the D and R parties are dirty

  • Hurricane Katrina has demonstrated that a system based on greed and private profit is not viable and unjust. As one of the speakers said. The world is watching - and retching.

  • This housing crisis came about primarily for one reason -- New Orleans is in a hurricane zone, and much of it is below sea level. Hurricane Katrina has demonstrated that building below sea level is not viable. New Orleans must provide mid-low income housing ABOVE sea level, so as to protect the lives and property of residents. Otherwise, another storm will inevitably re-flood the areas below sea level, forcing the people of New Orleans to relive this painful ordeal all over again.

  • Where do you propose they find this above sea level ground?

The main cause of the flooding of the city was the loss of wetlands and the MRGO. You can thank the oil compaines and the federal gov't for that.

In the mean time, the upper floors of these bldgs were undamaged and people could be living there - instead of under bridges.

  • ...(Continued)Youre the type that thinks Mcdonalds should be sued because some fool spilled hot coffee on themselves ????? Isnt coffee supposed to be hot and they spilled it on themselves. Yet a judgement was rendered against Mcdonald's so I guess that was a correct judgement.... (yeah ok..lol)and that person should have got a million dollars.

  • i like the Bush sign. i seen George Bush operating the trackhoe and Dick Cheiny in the dump truck

  • I wish the government would pay my mortgage.

  • I'd be mad too. They are loozing all their free housing

  • Congressman Jefferson needs to go to jail and stop telling these peoples they deserve More Welfare!

  • Congressman Jefferson has his own problems. lol

  • hey yawl, im from new orleans, and ive lived here all my life. so has my grandmother. and some of those people who were being pepper sprayed and arrested were her close friends. tell me what you think. cuz i wanna kno.

  • They are still going to get free housing, it will just be in a different shithole. How can anyone complain about free housing?

  • Fuck New Orleans - let this racist posse of white thugs have their stolen property. Vote Ron Paul and he'll pull the whole floor out from under them and their federally subsidized plans for apartheid. They'll be left holding a debt they'll never recover from. This same shit has gone down in my racist city MKE. Blowing out the blacks from city central with their million dollar condos - all standing empty with no buyers to be found.

  • What racist about trying to get rid of some slummy projects that are about 40 years overdue to be torn down? They want to establish a better neighborhood. The people living in the projects are still going to get new housing. They would be crazy for wanting to stay in that shithole housing!

  • You are an idiot!

  • It's the blacks that are racist in New Orleans. Just ask New Orleans Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan who fired his entire white staff of 52 and then hired all blacks. Because of him now the city was sued and had to pay over 4 million. Now theOrleans Parish District Attorney office is bankrupt. Now who is theracist posse, the blacks in that city that's who.

  • Get your facts straight. Jordan didnt just fire whites he also fired blacks they just didnt sue. What you dont realizes is that every administration brings in its own people as does the governor , president and so to the district attorney. When Connick became D.A. he also did the same thing. So when you tell the story tell the whole story and tell it correctly. Harry Connnick fired whites and replace them with white and that's the only difference.

  • Excuse you, I do have my facts straight. It is people like you who refuse to see the truth. Why do you think he LOST the lawsuit for firing all those whites.

  • No you do not have your facts straight. So you equate a lawsuit that is not in someones favors as being correct. You must live in a fairy tale world because all rendered judgements don't equal justice. Every D.A. in New Orleans has brought in their own staff..Connick..Garrison ect. This just happened to not be a white man bringing in his own white staff and getting rid of the previous white staff. Thats a fact and Jordan did get rid of blacks another fact.

  • It's time to start taxing the poor, not the rich. It's time to start eliminating the behavior that leads these societal wastes to live in squaler generation after generation. Bill Cosby is right!

  • why do people call a project their home? they don't own it they just have belongings there. and the people living in the projects don't care about others who are homeless on the street, they just happy they got theirs.

  • I live in the south east louisiana area and all you ever see in the local news is about drug related shoots all the time and it is in the " Projects " So I say destroy all thugg, hood, getto, gangter housing zoos.

  • Bush can save a city in a foreign country , but cannot save buildings in AMERICA ..its a damned shame. Since these people are poor , you will not hear much about this issue ..

  • Stop it with the Bush bashing crap. I LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS. The crime in public housing was very bad before the storm. 6 to 5 murders everday. We need to find a new way to help these people in the short term and then they need to HELP themselves!!!

  • what financial gain? "the projects" were initially built for WWII vets and families as temporary housing(not homes). 2/3 the residents are non tax-paying citizens. your statements are ill informed and ignorant.

  • scenario; lets say you are at a free concert and the band is HANDING OUT free t-shirts, when you reach the front of the line they run out of t-shirts. should you stand outsided of the band's bus and demand your shirt.

  • "6 to 5" murders a day" - pathetic. Weren't things bad enough without exagerations like this?

One way to help these people would be for their employers to pay them a living wage?

Where do you think the people who work in the back of the restaurants & hotels live? Their poverty is what undwrites the excesses of the wealthy in the city.

  • buildings or out date and need to be torn down. Come down here and see 4 yourself.

  • Bottom line people the ones who lived there don't own the house nor the property.

  • They own it just as much as any other tax payer in the state does, ass hole.

  • Then let them help me pay my house note ASSHOLE!

  • This is unbelieveable. If you live under the assistance of the government, (as in a housing project and/or development) you unfortunately have NO SAY in what happens to that property. If you OWN NOTHING, where exactly does your right to anything come in? I am all for the government helping out those who need it, but beggers unfortunately cannot be choosers.

  • Listen , have you ever heard of eminent domain? I got news for you ESUTHE , the Government can legally take your property and theres not a damned thing you can do about it , so actually , YOU OWN NOTHING and YOU TOO may soon be homeless. I bet your tone will be a little different then ..

  • I think thespokenfont is confusing eminent domain with expropriation. If the government (aka "the Man") uses eminent domain on your property, "the Man" must pay fair market value as a minimum. esuthe 1 is right on the mark!

  • Fair market value would be an estimate on what that property is worth at the time. and given an areas condition as opposed to what it will be in a few years ,is a damned steal.Listen ,when Bush said that he would rebuild New Orleans better than what it was before , real estate agents were wading thru the muddy waters, offering to buy homes from the people hit hardest by the hurricane ,they knew the property values in those areas would increase dramatically .

  • Uh, sir (thespokenfont)... You're not gettin' me. And please don't change the subject. Even if the government expropriates your property, they still HAVE TO PAY YOU even if it may be a "steal." With that money, I would then buy... (I'll give you 3 guesses) ...ANOTHER HOME. These poor people do need help, and they will indeed receive it. But if you need assistance from the government, the location & manner in which that assistance is administered is completely up to the government.

  • Hell yeah! Golf Coarse all the way!

  • Not against improving public housing at taxpayer expense. Why would they be appose to that? I ax you that.

  • all i gotta say is

    fucked up.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, your statement "if the owner deems the area is unlivable they they may choose to tear it down" is not true. There are laws that protect renters from property owners who try to evict tenants purely on the basis of financial gain. Some states even require that landlords MUST burden the expense of relocation. This also applies to section 8 housing - even if it is state owned.

  • what financial gain? "the projects" were initially built for WWII vets and families as temporary housing(not homes). 2/3 the residents are non tax-paying citizens. your statements are ill informed and ignorant.

  • every statement published or televised points the finger at the big bad government. does anyone own a mirror. take responsibility for your life, dont put your burdens and short comings on everyone else.

  • You obviously have no fucking clue who you're talking to. I make a six figure income... so don't preach to me.

Are there poor people who bring this plight on themselves? Sure there are... but that shouldn't make any difference. YOUR first duty as a healthy and able human being is to help others who are less fortunate. If you think otherwise, then you're nothing but a piece of shit.

  • Non tax paying?!?! Wow... talk about ill informed. Just because they don't own property doesn't mean they don't pay taxes.

  • these people are just mad that they won't have a free place to stay anymore.

  • Moron - almost all of these people PAID RENT.

  • You're right. They paid $35 a month with free utilities and free Cox cable. HANO is building them new low income housing in a mixed development neighborhood, but now there will be a separate meter on each unit. I ask you, shouldn't they be happy to relocate into a new home? Or are they mad that the handout won't pay for HBO on their new big screen TV. Don't blame the rich people for their situation blame your democrat party for giving them the handouts and putting them in this position.

  • $35/mo? Cite your source.

Where are these new units? How long before they are built?

Well when it is the rich of the city who have underpaid them for generations, and let the schools turn to crap, who should I blame?

When a man/woman puts in a hard days work, AND the employer is filthy rich, shouldn't they earn a wage decent enough that they don't need public assistance?

  • Obviously, you are not from New Orleans and no nothing of the city's history and present status. The only thing you know is what you see in this retarded video or read on Media Matters and the Huffington Post.

  • "...and no noting of the city's history"

Were you educated in NO public schools?

Check my channel and you will see where I was Nov '05.

I have relatives in Valance St. cemetary. My ancestors have been in LA since the early 1800s.

I don't read Huffington Post or Media Matters.

I've been in Desire St. project, had a friend who lived on N. Galvez, have know others who worked for a living and lived in these projects, my dad was a page in Rex, I went to UNO.

    Obviously you are an ass.

  • Ok, you've called me a moron and an ass. I refuse to communicate or educate someone that cannot progress his or her mind beyond childlike name-calling.

  • 'assume' makes an ass....

I get tired of people who try to state the 'obvious' about other with little grounds.

When I ask you to cite your source for the $35 rent you instead claim I know nothing about the city or its history.

When my comment proves you wrong, you look for another excuse.

  • $35 is what most of the occupants pay. Some pay more and some pay less. The government picks up the tab for the remaining balance. This money comes from our tax dollars...whatever. Do your own research and quit crying. If your Dad was in Rex this doesn't even apply to you. No one from the projects was in Rex. I'm done with you ignorance!!!

  • You first stated that they paid $35 w/o qualifications. A bit deceptive, heh?

If people who are willing to work were paid a living wage, we wouldn't need to spend our tax $ to house them. Our taxes could then go to help only the aged and infirm - as they should do.

Just because my family didn't grow up in the projects, doesn't mean I don't have a right to object to the way these people are treated. It applies to me because I am a tax-payer & a human being.

  • I'd rather give them HBO and not bail out Wall Street for the tune of $700B. What are America's priorities anyway?

  • I was just thinking about the big TERRORISM of the Wall Street Bailouts. All the morons screaming and hurling profanities about what the people in New Orleans do and don't deserve & how pathetic they are, are not bitching & screaming about how dispicable & pathetic the 1% of the population & corporations are, while they are taking it up the butt, being enslaved for generations to come to reward those who are receiving YOUR & YOUR children's money to reward them 4 CRIMINAL & horrendous practices!

  • I live in New Orleans, there is so much crime in public housing areas, I glad to see them demolish it. The people living in New Orleans public housing had no chance for a better life.

  • And taking away public housing is giving them a better chance at life? What do you suppose is going to happen to the crime rate then?

  • This form of public housing is a trap. Whether by a clever design or unintended consequence, this form of housing traps people, mostly black, in a world that THEY (the Democrats) can control. These housing projects were havens for drug trafficing and the crime that accompanied it. It is burdensome on the city resources.

Move out people. Open your eyes. The "Leaders" you've been electing are merely puppeteers for your lives. Their only purpose in life is to control YOURS.

  • The trap is the wages paid in the city.

Where the hell are people supposed to move? How do you pay $1200/mo rent for a small apt when you make $7.50/hr?

  • Why don't all of you move to New Orleans and live there for 5 years and then come back and tell everyone how great public housing is. You people are really unbelievable. Its nice that you have all the footage of that criminal Bill Jefferson throughout.

  • Fantastic video. Please show this to everyone you can. Louisiana Sen. Vitter's Phone number in Washington is 202 224 4623. Do what you can. Consider going to New Orleans to witness and stop this greed land grab.
