I replaced the Water of an '80 MGB LE yesterday with Motor Oil. It was a flood vehicle from Isabel and the owner had paid for this service to have been done several years ago.
MG's take the same weight Motor oil for threir trans and I use Castrol 20w50. I would assume that 2.5 qts would fill her up. The fluid that runs out of the filler hole is your gauge and determines that the trans is full. Damage has already occured to the cluster gear with the chipped teeth and that is the noise that we hear.
I really heard the trans sing on accelleration also. Try full synthetic 20w50 or equivalent as you'll never quite down that cluster gear except by replacing it!
I'm glad you heard that too! Its got me worried that the transmission may have no oil in it at all. If that is the case, then maybe there is an oil leak in the transmission itself. I would hate to have to pull the engine again just to get the tranmission out and replace a seal. =(
Any idea how much oil goes in these transmissions?
Thats exactly what me and my dad had to do when we took our 1978 midget for its first drive. The brakes were out so we used the emergency brake.
