  • Hey, heypepper. The whole point is that increase in both air pressure and flow controls BOTH the pitch and the volume. These exersizes are a way for you to take control of this annoying fact to your advantage. So that you can discover for yourself the quietest, the loudest, the lowest, the highest and everything in between. - Just do the exersizes for a week and you'll "get it" Its a blowing thing not a thinking thing

  • I don't want to disprove you because you take a very healthy scientific approach to how the horn works which is extremely refreshing, and I've been trying to figure out if what your doing actually incorporates what i've learned from various professionals in the past few years, so I'll just share with you the difference between what you talk about to what i've learned. I don't know anything about kpa, but I do know that playing higher notes should NOT incorporate a larger QUANTITY of air...

  • @heypepper but should include air speeds. Physics wise I'm sure you more than understand that higher pitches run on higher frequencies which use faster wavelengths (i.e A440 then an octave higher is A220(I'm might be wrong about this can't remember off the top of my head). Volume is controlled more by quantity of air, so that portion you have right. Also there is definately more pressure in the upper register of the instrument HOWEVER this is indicitive of many factors such as ....

  • @heypepper From the instrument, increased resistance in the embouchre due to a decrease in size of the aperture, etc.. I may have misunderstood your physics if this is exactly what you meant so I apologize in advance, but I thought it necessary to bring these facts to light since it wasn't clear to me in the video. I don't know if you have heard of it, but the Carmine Caruso method book is an excellent book to apply your ideas to and experiment more with air speeds in the upper register!

    I'm also interested the physics of the trumpet and how that relates to playing. Also what makes one trumpet better than another -specifically: bore, mouthpiece, materials, dimensions etc.

  • @Dionpr1 Hi there, in short, the changes in the geometry control EVERYTHING. This includes the mpc and any "imperfections".. Studies have been done to evaluate the effect of materials, don't matter one hoot. Its the MASS. Heavy horns with lots of bracing sound dark . Light horns sound bright and buzzy. Check out JASM (journal of the acoustic society of America) in your local university library to read the orignal research papers.Also visit the UNSW acoustics site. Cheers Pete

  • Many students have a very resistive system - lips, tongue all good for high but not enough wind power to drive it. Others the opposite, heaps of gas but their system is very floppy, They get louder rather than higher. This simple self regulating exercise will develop you in fast and balanced way no matter what your problem is. Three levels of volume, Three harmonics.....10 levels of volume 10 harmonics. Just like basketball you need to be able to shoot AND to run to win the game eh?

  • So for the guy who asked "Simplify" here it is. If you can't make 9 levels of volume on a bottom C you WONT be able to play the 9th harmonic.ie top E. Now WHY you cant could be due to many other factors - don't matter WHY - just practise till you CAN then you can say OK got the air power! BUT THEN you need to be able to put a "#9 wind thru the #1 hole" so to speak. This we develop with the harmonics. The trick is to keep the air power and the resistive strength of the "system" in step.

  • My intention was to give you a simple fool proof way of improving your range and power. You don't even need to understand the why of it. Remember when you were a kid learning to ride a bike and your dad had to tell you "pedal faster" and the bike would be MORE stable? Kinda counter intuitive - but it works...but only if you have a go and do it....if you sit around on the street and attempt to decide without experiment if your dads advice is true or not....you'll never learn to ride that bike!

  • From the author Pete. 2 years on..Wow, I posted this just because I thought it would help a few people and generate some discussion about acoustics and its role in learning the trumpet. I have not monitored or filtered the comments or even looked at them in this time.

  • Im in grade 9 right now, and i've been playing trumpet since grade 6 with a really good friend. Now, my friend has always been a high register player, since he is very good haha. Just about a year and a half ago i started playing high register as well.. but just recently i've been playing like crap i dont know if its just my lips are tired.. since i do play A LOT.. but this has helped after watching this i tried and its Beautiful :P!

    Because they use a reed, and in the flute's case, you don't buzz on a mouthpiece. Saxophones are made of brass, but are woodwinds because you use a reed.

  • @shirups i suppose its because of the reed system that flaps to produce sound on the clarinet is made of wood. Wind is passing through the wood to make sound. i guess.

  • This is very misleading Sir. I am by no means a GOOD trumpet player, but I know better. If I interpret your post correctly, It means the louder I can play, the higher I can play, right? If that was all there was to it, I'd be doing back flips right now. Also if my interpretation is correct, then the note should just climb as a get louder all I should know is how loud do I need to play to get high C. Your scientific approach may be lost on many persons since some variables are excluded.

  • Sounds simple BUT separating out one factor and disregarding all the other components is misleading ... other components = tongue level , lip over lap , lip tension , support , air speed . pre hearing the note , co ordinating everything!!

  • lol i am a marine bandsman and im telling you dont listen to the idiot in this clip lol, if you want to get high notes you have to build support which comes from the bottom of you stomach muscels lol

  • I think his basic message is that you can hit successive harmonics by holding the chops still which increasing air speed. The aim here is to take the mystery and nervousness out of getting high notes and keeping embouchure acrobatics to a minimum. Whether you do it by increased diaphragm/intercostal work or tongue positioning is not relevant.

  • that is the absolute worst way to gain range, nothing is worth losing the tone quality that he has by using that method. Pitch increases with tongue position more than anything, but we do this intuitively, if you don't believe me, try it yourself and feel where your tongue is as you play up the harmonics. Higher notes require support, not more air, although these are often confused. Support comes from the diaphragm, not from just blowing more hard.

  • You're poisoning the minds of young trumpet players with this crap. This isn't how we teach people how to play brass instruments anymore. As you can see from your awful tone quality in this video, this doesn't produce the kind of results you really want when developing your upper register. While air efficiency and a good strong lower register are key concepts to hold on to, this method won't work in the long run. Use syllables to change partials. It's easier and it works better.

  • How else you think the toyota trumpet player was created, if it didn't use some physics and understanding of air pressure relative to aperture. All he explain is the physics behind the threshold point of a note.... Cross referencing helps a lot in understanding.

  • He is saying the amount of pressure it takes to play low notes loudly is the same pressure it takes to play higher with a fixed smaller aperture. The louder you can play low notes will determine the higher you will play. soft Low notes=little pressure, loud low notes= more pressure. soft high notes = the loud low note pressure. The aperture is the only thing that changes. SO TRUMPET PLAYERS, IF YOU WANNA PLAY HIGH, LEARN TO PLAY LOW AND LOUD. HA HA HA KOOL! ^_^ YOUR MY PHYSICS HERO.

    Recent discoveries in acoustics and physics have lead to some new and powerful exercises.

    If these are rescent discoveries then they are not going to have results like traditional techniques.

    Second, I sound like crap on most of my technique exercises. If you sound great on what your working on then your not going to get better. You should always work on things above your abilities, and perform things at your ability.

  • You're thinking that he called it a "woodwind" instrument, but he didn't. Any instrument that uses air to create sound is classified as a "wind" instrument which is then broken up into "woodwind" or "brass".

  • It's about getting a higher range. It is basically saying that it takes the same amount of pressure to play low notes loudly and high notes. So if you can play a low note to 4 different noise levels, you can play 4 pitches of the note. S playing low notes loudly can help a person develop their range.
