Same settings as you I needed 2000 on brightness to get that effect. I didn't know what mental.ray renderer preset or whatever thing I had to change to though so used mental.ray.photometric.lighting.with.gi x!
Could you help me? It doesn't work for me, i just get a plain color object as it would be self illuminated. Is it nessesary to use photometric lights for this to work?
mr. bluesummers are you using any plug-ins and what is your version of 3ds max? i use 3ds max 2011 with no plug-ins and i'm not not able to convert my materials to mental ray. funny thing is when i take a peek at the option paragraphs when material is default i see mental ray options paragraph active but then i can't find the glow option in it. i don't know is it because of version difference or what but can you show us an alternative way? (yes there are more people here suffering same problem)
man, first your vid is awesome, thanks for sharing! I really would like to know if this glow is reflected by an arch & design material...im trying hard do acchieve a nice and reflectable light material like this one: watch?v=ctv2lKmBdjI&feature=related
i never comment. this is the first glow tutorial that worked for me (I use photographic exposure so other methods don't work).....thank you soooooooooo MUCH!
P.D.: I don't have that mental ray and glow as materials, only I found the mental ray in a mental ray menu in Material Editor window. Where can I get that materials? plz tell me :(
@Cuxito17 i have that problem too i cant get mental ray option to replace default but the mental ray menu is already there and i don't have glow option in those preferences. is this happening because we have version 2011 and you have some older version? ( 2010 version has light grey menus but 2011 has black )
Nice tutorial man :P ... I think I will use this to make a logo for a group work in my university. One question by the way... ¿How can I make a "animated" neon light effect?. For example, the logo starts with a circular camera movement around the text, then starts to turn on the light slowly and finaly turned on in full. But the most typical effect: the last word of the logo starts to fail.
Sorry my bad english in some parts, but I think you can understand me xD.

ok this is realy cool and all, but im wondering if there is a way i can use objects to iluminate my models in a Studio render settup, cause i can do this with Vray but i cant seem to find a way to do it in Mental ray, you see in Vray i just apply a vray light material, and i gett soft shadows and it gives a realy awsome look, probly the most realistic look i can get without using HRDI,
I was getting comments whenever I post it on Monday because in some places that's Tuesday already. I guess by "Monday Movie" I mean "Somewhere between Sunday and Tuesday" Movie. ^__^
Now I have a question Mr. Summers: That works well for an unlit area but let's say I have a city scene and I want the light bounce coming off the back of the wall. How much is the illumination from the light bounce going to be drowned out by other light sources in my scene (street lamps, Cars, Trains, etc)
Fave'd and 5 star'd...Definately trying this when I get home after work.
The light is going to be pretty subtle. You'll need to adjust the "brightness" of the Glow(lume) shader higher if you're not getting enough. Any more than 2 final gather bounces and that render will go really slow.
love u

@Cuxito17 Hi Buddy. Just incase you have still not got your answer to ur question. Ill just give you a small technique that I have followed.
1. Follow the exact same tutorial.
2. Go to Helpers. Choose Manipulators.
3. Select slider. Create it in the scene with maximum value as 8.
4. Click on the slider & press Ctrl + 5
5. Go to object slider & click on value then click on the glowing text and in the popup, choose the material option and click on brightness.
