I feel like BoA's not so big success in the U.S. market cannot be blamed on the US industry unless she was signed to one. Didn't SM Entertainment make a US branch just for her US launch? However, I think the downside to this was that if you're not working with a company who knows how the industry works there, it's harder to launch her. They put her on such small TV shows and put her on MTV AFTER TRL was cancelled. That didn't help her at all! Utada is different though, she has US labels.
I think the reason why a lot of k-pop and j-pop stars don't do very well in the u.s. is just that it's just a different style of music and the fact the fact that Asians aren't huge percentage of the population in the us. It's not that a person of asian descent can't make in in the u.s. as musician it's just that they would probably have to be from an english-speaking country (Canada, UK, Australia, new Zealand, U.S.).

Boa has got amazing talent and I gotta say just one thing, the fact that the US market isn't supporting her is their loss. This is the best way for the japanese music industry to climb in the market to number 1. And besides Asia in itself has a unique touch to music that you won't find in america these days. This was probably the first video of BoA I ever saw. While the song didn't stick with me, I always remembered the throwback to 80s fashion and her dancing. This is far from the best choreography of any KPop MV, but her performance and stage presence make it worthwhile.
I can think of only one (or two) other KPop personas that can dance and sing as well as she does. I'm not known for being a big fan of mainstream, but great artists like her are definitely worth paying attention to ^_^

Personally, 99% of what I listen to has never been on a radio that I've heard. (given, most of it IS asian these days, but I've never heard Ugly Duckling or Jurassic 5 on the radio, unless I specifically requested, and most of the time the dj's ask 'who?')
@mya619 Utada actually made it onto the radio with "Come Back to Me". I heard it a couple times while in the car and felt very proud for her. But it was her second album and took a while to get picked up and she is FROM the US so image a "real" foreigner. Americans are pretty much TOLD what is "cool" and what they should listen to. Also BoA's US album didn't just release, that was over a year ago haha! Almost two.

It was the same with Utada's second US album that came out 3 years ago as well. I feel like BoA's not so big success in the U.S. market cannot be blamed on the US industry unless she was signed to one. Didn't SM Entertainment make a US branch just for her US launch? However, I think the downside to this was that if you're not working with a company who knows how the industry works there, it's harder to launch her. They put her on such small TV shows and put her on MTV AFTER TRL was cancelled. That didn't help her at all! Utada is different though, she has US labels.

I think the reason why a lot of k-pop and j-pop stars don't do very well in the u.s. is just that it's just a different style of music and the fact the fact that Asians aren't huge percentage of the population in the us. It's not that a person of asian descent can't make in in the u.s. as musician it's just that they would probably have to be from an english-speaking country (Canada, UK, Australia, new Zealand, U.S.).

@sweetdwhite I actually have a theory. And it's Sabotage! Did you ever see the U.S.A debut of her first single. It was straight up sabotage and they do not do promotions the way they should be done in the U.S to get attention. AGAIN Sabotage! U.S is trying to keep asian pop stars out because once they get popular it will be an explosion of popularity in the U.S. And the infamous they "they" in regards to the music industry. Is trying to put it off and doing it well. ok sorry done ranting.....

Boa has got amazing talent and I gotta say just one thing, the fact that the US market isn't supporting her is their loss. This is the best way for the japanese music industry to climb in the market to number 1. And besides Asia in itself has a unique touch to music that you won't find in america these days. The variety of asian music vs US music which is pretty much repetetive club beat songs, is really wide. G'luck to Boa =)

This was probably the first video of BoA I ever saw. While the song didn't stick with me, I always remembered the throwback to 80s fashion and her dancing. This is far from the best choreography of any KPop MV, but her performance and stage presence make it worthwhile.
I can think of only one (or two) other KPop personas that can dance and sing as well as she does. I'm not known for being a big fan of mainstream, but great artists like her are definitely worth paying attention to ^_^

TVXQ & BoA are top stars in Japan. Kara, BB, & SNSD are gaining a-lot of fame there, but are not top stars yet. Just because a K-singer debuts and Japan and makes it to top 5 or up on the charts does NOT mean their TOP stars.
Lol, do you not know that Japanese music industry is the second largest music industry in the world, after U.S music industry. Why do you think it's every Korean idol/group goal to make it in the Japanese market then the U.S?

@Kdramafied10 Lol I think it's because it's harder for asians to actually get noticed in the U.S this japan, I mean Utada made 2 US albums and not once have I heard one of her songs on the radio and BOA just got done with her first US album and I've never heard her songs on the radio or seen her videos on tv,Japan is more I think diverse and more accepting with artist, Americans are picky and only want who has money not talent anymore.

yes and no... it's not so much what people like as what Clearchannel likes. (they're the ones who own 90%+ of all advertising and radio channels)
Personally, 99% of what I listen to has never been on a radio that I've heard. (given, most of it IS asian these days, but I've never heard Ugly Duckling or Jurassic 5 on the radio, unless I specifically requested, and most of the time the dj's ask 'who?')

@mya619 Utada actually made it onto the radio with "Come Back to Me". I heard it a couple times while in the car and felt very proud for her. But it was her second album and took a while to get picked up and she is FROM the US so image a "real" foreigner. Americans are pretty much TOLD what is "cool" and what they should listen to. Also BoA's US album didn't just release, that was over a year ago haha! Almost two.

@xnakurax Aww I never heard it on the radio here :( or any of Boa's songs on the radio, they showed a 5 sec commercial at 3AM and I mean it was literally a 5sec commercial to buy her debut album. It was the same with Utada's second US album that came out 3 years ago as well. I think I heard Come back to me by Utada on the radio only ONCE and they edited the song short to get to a crappy Lil Wayne song right after :(

@mya619 I think we also have to look at what was released in the US. No offence to Utada, but i think that the songs and the album she released in the US were not great. Her Japanese singles were way better and more her.she didn't portray that in her US debut.
I did hear BoA on the radio in LA because she had interviews with KissFM but if you look at the American MV version it really looked poorly made.
These artist need to come in as themselves and not what they consider is americanish.

@tacojohn69 I'm not saying that asians invented the style of music that they are doing I'm saying that it's hard for Japanese or any other asian that wants to debut in the US it's hard for them. America wants sex appeal. What maybe sexy to other asians cultures may not be appealing to the american music media as sexy. America is a country that doesn't think right with talent, it's more about sex then talent. The only countries they really let in are people in the UK and South Americans
