Great song, I love it. An Irish folk song it is not though. Eric Bogle is an Australian of Scottish Descent and although we can relate to all who suffered and lost their lives for us this song is about the Scottish.
Big Cheese : the pipes and kilts are there perhaps because the guy who wrote it was a Scotsman, born in Peebles Then emigrated to Aussie where he wrote this song about one of the Anzacs at Gallipoli. Flowers of the Forest is also a pipe tune played at the funeral of Scottish soldiers..
