There are plenty records of rhino carcasses that were found with wounds clearly showing they were gored to death by elephant tusks. The majority of the elephants involved in said battles were young adult bulls that entered musth prematurely, thus they become more aggressive and more likely to start the fights. Their size, strength and smarts take over from there.
