  • 10 people did not have the capacity to understand this.

  • Kya Hindu kisi janam me boudh ke braber ho payeng

  • Very very very good

  • Fantastic lecture!

  • Un poco cientifista para mi gusto, pero no deja de ser una perspectiva muy hermosa. Aprendí un poco más del pensamiento budista gracias :)

  • This actually makes sense.

  • I wish I would have realized The Buddhas teachings when I was younger. I was thinking like "Why didn't anyone tell me about this?" :)

  • @uilium yes, I was 58 when I did my first vipassana retreat in a forest monastery in Thailand. After a few days I actually saw myself happening in micro-detail for long periods, felt 80 lbs lighter, and slapped my head in amazement. Why was I never told about this stress-free first-person domain during my long decades of expensive education in the West?

  • @siamkarl I need to go on one of those if I want to see myself happening in that detail...sounds like you were speed reading yourself. Since you mentioned it, could you see or experience the 3 marks of existence in yourself?

  • @uilium Yes, been wanting to do a retreat for 30 years so my intention to follow instructions was strong. Intention is paramount, since you must drop your story. Even after a few days it became just about impossible to attach a sense of permanence to mere weather patterns. Everything arising is so utterly transient. After a few retreats it's just newness replacing newness continuously, one's own brain weather being just part of all that. I was lucky to find the "shortcut" Luangpor Teean method.

  • Brilliant!

  • Excellant! Enlightened lecture. I have many things from this wonderful lecture.

  • Wonderful

  • Prof Lewis,

Thank you for excellent lecture. about fire burnt himself, please go to Buddha Boy from Nepal Ram Bahadur Bomjon. Please see 10 Min Video taken out of 1hr7min full video. True or not but it will be a great to varify. Palden Dorje.com

  • Very well spoken lecture

  • WOW ! professor Lancaster , Thank you so much !!! u made my day !!! A thorough explanation of Buddhism !

  • 37:18

Question: Is that chain that separates and cut from the rest is the one who so called "reach nirvana"

  • a million thank to both UCTV and Dr Lewis Lancaster. it clarify a lot of my custom beliefs on Buddhism.

  • Who is going to translate this to the Mahanayake theros in Sri Lanka?

  • This moment is sufficient unto itself

but ego's love personal ego based his-stories.

  • wait a minute - cremation = buddhism

what about Hindus - don't they cremate

and isn't hinduism older than buddhism

  • @claudelebel55 I think he mentioned Buddhism is the 1st WORLD Religion. Hinduism is older but didn't spread beyond S. Asia. At first I think the same way but catch that the second time. In regards to cremation, not sure about it and have no knowledge of Hinduism cremation. However to my belief is that he saying the cremation of Buddhism into relic is what causes it to spread. Make it spread easier as he say, the places where they put the relic become holy. Can see why Buddha remain is splited up

  • Brilliant lecture, informative in so many ways. May all beings be happy _/\_

  • This is so awesome!! can't explain in words!!

  • Brilliant lecture! Enlightening :^). Thanks a million!

  • Very good speech. People are turning because it let people to think and question. I just hope that other religions won't destroy this movement of understanding.

  • Love the lecture and the lecturer (that is i like the way he lectured). Gosh I wonder if this guy ever studied in Nalanda the ancient Buddhist univesity inIndia in some past life or lifetimes. I like the way he explains Buddhism and its relevance to the world today in a way that is so easy to understand. Thanks so much Prof. Lancaster

  • watch youtube videos:

Greek Buddhism Pt. 1 through 4

  • Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu! Thank you for your contribution to us.

  • great lecture. the 'church, zen' search entry comment isn't true though. still, a coherent introduction to some buddhist concepts in light of cog sci and such. thank you for posting.

  • I'm just finding Buddhism...thank you for helping me understand.

  • wath yutube videos:

Google Personal Growth Series: Mindsight: The New Science of

    TEDxBlue - Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. - 10/18/09

  • @qaplatlhinganmaH your recommendations are excellent. After watching The Shape Of Ancient Thought, I ordered the book. Just arrived today. Can't wait. Thank you!

  • good lecture but it looks like he seems to forget to mention that buddists didn't invented all this things throgh pfilopsphical and rational thinking and speculation ( like western philisophy ) but through meditation and experience and and not using rational mind and that's core of buddhism - p[ractice to become enlightenent and everything else is less important.

  • @zbysiu666 check out madhyamika analysis. Reasoning into Reality is a good on it.

  • I wish the later part of the lecture was separate, ie part 1 and 2, bc his words on causality are extremely important for ppl to hear, and I guess alot of ppl give up on this lecture after some mins when hearing about stupas/relics and such, it simply puts the buddist in the realm of superstious nonsense for the modern man, and therefore (i assume) ppl just give up on this. THEN comes the part they need to hear later in the lecture...but too late! anyway - Metta.

  • @MrVoid77 good point. relics, shmelics! Still historical context and all...

  • Great lecture. The last part about getting more hits for "zen" than "church" is wrong though. At least via google.

  • Explosive ending though. :)

  • we're BuddhisteCatholic ...

  • Sensational! Love it! Outstanding lecture! Very educational! I can't ask for more, thank you professor Lancaster!

  • Buddhism makes sense. It encourages people to seek knowledge.

  • All of the comments I have read are amusing. Armchair Quarterbacks all of you. What is most important is the sincere practice of the buddhist faith. Its history is important but your personal journey is moreso

  • Greco-Buddhism, sometimes spelt Graeco-Buddhism, refers to the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism, which developed between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE

  • cont...

What Einstein did say : The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a personal God and avoid dogma and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. If there is any religion that could cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism.

  • @ kawilik: Einstein never said that, it's an apocryphal statement. Look in his speeches or in anything he wrote, he never said that. I am a Buddhist myself, and it would have been nice if Einstein had said that, but he didn't.

So far as relics goes, the Buddha's relics are mentioned in the Mahaparinibbana-Sutta a.k.a. The Buddha's Final Nirvana, in the Digha-nikaya. Check out Rupert Gethin's Sayings of the Buddha, published by Oxford World's Classics.

  • I have seen these words attributed to Einstein, but have never seen an actual reference or source quoted.

  • Mr. Lancaster's overall presentation was a good one. However, as an American Buddhist I can't help but feel he misrepresented some of the integral aspects of the Teaching, especially when talking about the transmission of the Teaching from one country to another. Not once did he mention the Four Noble Truths by name, nor their commonness to all.

  • mallidevarak! The Buddha did not mention relics in the Thuparaha Sutta (Anguttara Nikaya) or those worthy of a stupa in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta? If that is what you're saying then I think you'd better do some more reading.

  • Very effective way to the modern world to think of true natural law towards betterment of day to day life. through a portable religion..."Do it your self Religion" Thank you Mr.Lewis Lancaster...you have done a wonderful start towards wonderful portable religion....

  • Buddhist monks does not beg for foods.

  • I beliv shamanism is the oldest religion.

  • @ hebalott: Shamanism is indeed arguably the world's oldest religion, but it's not the world's oldest "portable" religion. Shamanism is not "evangelical" per se, and it is bound by language and geography.

  • Dr Burke is talking about the Buddhism that has been created by Asians as "religion" and added to it all kinds of traditions like the "relics' he is talking about...It is not the real Buddhism. It is not a religion it is a philosophy that Lord Buddha introduced.. that does not have relics, traditions, drumming, dancing, drawings etc etc...I do not think Dr B knows about the reality about what Buddhism is...

  • Thanks for this video, learned quite a bit.

  • Amazing and truely informative with a good conlusion.

  • Buddhist monks and nuns DO NOT take a vow of poverty. Read the 227 regula--poverty ain't mentioned.

  • Very nice lecture.

  • Actually, I never heard or witnessed this lecture at all; I just interacted with neural patterns erupting between my ears, eyes and brain. So how to know if what Lancaster said is true, or if he as a man bis trustworthy, since--according to him--I can have no real knowledge of either? This pseudo-wisdom's only power is that its self-contradictory character makes it hugely popular to the contemporary (especially 'academic') mind.

  • correction: does he not mean that CHINA was introduced to Japan by the Koreans, not that Korea was introduced to Japan by the Koreans??

  • Correction of your miscorrection: Sorry, he actually says that Buddhism was introduced to Japan via Korean Monks not monks from China.

  • he says, we may neverknow the cause, if we look at all our histories, etc.. but in 'dependent co-arising', the teaching of buddha, things do not arise in context of linear time, bcoz time is an illusion. if we think about our history arising, all at the same time, maybe its easier to grasp.

  • What's the deal with elitism? Do you think only people born into poverty in the east can be Buddhist?

And Buddhism is not to be complained about, Judeo-Christian beliefs are cause for a lot of the world's strife.

  • Wow! It is very meaningful at all! So, may the truth of Dharma will benefits us, thank you. ~~

    X-D

  • Love it ! Explain Buddhism in a easy but modern way!

  • that last part: not put copyright. I think that is wrong. It is great to have a freeware copyright. Because without copyright people can say they own something and even change it legally.

  • An example of the portability of Buddhism -- Tibetan Buddhism is a politicalized buddhism, when a ruling class combined with Buddhism, a whole new branch of Buddhism was born, there's a supreme one (Dalai Lama) and a whole range of hirarchy of kings (all sort of dharma kings), and normally politcical power will be assigned according to their ranking, and the notion of reincarnation in buddhism also serve them well to maintain the power grip.

  • he simply said "you can't put reality into the intelligent design box" without backing it up at all.. I would like to ask why you can not..

  • i think he already mentioned the reason why not: the paradox of cause of the cause of 'the designer of the designer'.

  • come to think of it. thats pretty simple haha

  • fucking great

  • that's your interpretation of religion. what connects all religions though is the creation of a way to find meaning in life. To create a healthy environment for all. That's what is in the message of many of the prophets. it is those preachers that find this essence of truth and healthy society, and changed the world around in this way who have made religion worthwile. i think for instance about tenzin gyatso, the fourteenth dalai lama talking about the way each religion can be of benefit.

  • perfectly explained! great for novice! very simple and easy to undestand!!!

  • An outstanding lecture!!! Thank you for sharing this great video

  • There is very little in this lecture that is

Buddhist teachings, e.g. no self. Everthing

else is his creativity. One importnat point

to remember, Buddhism does NOT talk about

the outside world (multiverses, etc.). According to Buddhism "you" are the universe.

When you understand "you", you understand

    the universe/multiverse.

  • No, you are wrong.

Buddhism does have a cosmology, teachings about Planets, life and worlds outside ours.

Yes, they are not the most basic, and known ones like about ego, but they do exist.

  • Tibetan certain buddhist practice based on 5 main religious sciences and monks study whole science for around 20 years and earn their way of religious doctoral degree. I cannot perfectly translate that into english but those 5 are -creative arts, -medicine, -philosophy, -somekind of math and astrology and one more I forgot. Basically those Buddhist temples were operated in university way but under more strict order.

  • He more or less touches on this around 27:00

  • This was a FANTASTIC lecture, one of the BEST I've heard on Buddhism in my life. In addition the monumental work he has done and still doing for the cause of sharing the "KNOWLEDGE" with the rest of the world, using modern technology of the 21st century is the continuation of what the Buddha himself started more than 25000 years ago with 60 of His deciples who were asked to " go far and wide and share this knowledge out of compassion for the benefit of many beings in the world". - Bandula.

  • Thank you for discussing these points and going a little farther into the topics. I especially like the approach of taking a historical view and showing it's influence on others.

  • An outstanding lecture!!! Thank you so much.

  • Greatest lecture on Buddhism all the time.

  • Ignorance is bliss, anyone makes a statement like this doesn't understand message of Buddha,

a True message of spirituality as opposed to religious fanaticism-alacomb salam

  • u just got owned by buddhism! :D

  • One of the best lectures I ever heard. Thank you so very much for the post. Buddhism is a good solution to this stressful life.

  • Born and raised Catholic, I embraced Buddhism having listened to a talk by a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk in Kandy, Sri Lanka where I was a Fullbright scholarship. Thanks to Buddhism I've found peace. I love this lecture by Prof. Lancaster.

  • @Nathan20000nathan

I am the same ... however, understand that the 'defect' is on your side; the peace of Christ passes all understanding ... never mind the 'defects' of institutionalized religion ... Advaita also sharpened my mind in incalculable ways ... the Truth is one, and the Truth is Great, indeed. Christ's Truth is also 'portable' (a great metaphor here); it's just that, for various reasons, Buddhism is so much more accessible. But Christ is there, too ...

May all Beings Be Happy! :-)

  • @Nathan20000nathan Have we met? >.>

  • It is very simply says the truth, Impressive valuable lecture

  • It was great lecture towards the Development of Buddhism among the Intelligent people who want to understand the Reality of Nature. To understand the Religion of "Do It your Self"

    Dhammasiri

  • the ending speech is so important. scientist, researchers, companies, such entities, let go of your competition barbarism, your greed. realize - it is us the world that help make your ideas possible, we shouldnt have to pay a forced tribute for what you get to do/make. think positively, follow your dreams not for fame and fortune, but for humanity and happiness. this realization will allow us to reach Nirvana but no one seems to want to do it. and then we wonder why we arnt in Nirvana.

  • Wonderful.

  • Good job, well done Prof. Lancaster. A very clear, precise and encouraging piece of lecture to those absolutely had no idea of what Buddhism is about. Thanks to your good karma to talk Buddhism to the many out there. Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu.
