actually sir, the US Census Bureau has NEVER fined or prosecuted anyone for refusing to answer this survey. I told the census worker to go fuck himself when he showed up at my door trying to "help" me fill out the survey and I haven't heard a peep from them since and this was in 2008.

I agree with everything said here, except that the government will prosecute those who don't answer. I have found no citations of anyone being either fined or improisoned. If anyone has any information to the contrary, please post. As a doctor, I do agree with some of the HIPPA concerns raised by other posts. Remember though, not all institutions must comply with HIPPA and I'm sure the governent would consider itself exempt.

If one were to answer a census question incorrectly, or simply fail to answer it, the penalty is $100.00

People need to get some real facts, and try to understand why this information is sought. Today (3-15) we received the 2010 Census form, apparently a much briefer one. I just wonder why all questions refer to 4-1-2010 in the past tense. Why not send it after 4-1?

The letter we received alerting us to the census form which we will receive soon is written in 6 languages and says the information gathered will be used to determine how the federal dole will be distributed. As if the money comes from them!?

What is the penalty if you lie about the information you do not wish to provide such as what time you go to work and how long it takes to get there? Are they going to go out and verify each and every filled out form? I do not think so. The Government has no right to require this type of information and it is obvious why they want it. The fine for providing false answers is $500, not responding is only $100. Respectfully, Mr. Whitehead is incorrect about the possible fines possibly reaching $10,000 to $50,000, and the possibility of enforcing it, they won't. The maximum fine is $100 and the chances of getting fined are slim and none.

The Census this year is a short form. The American Community Survey, which is continuously sent to thousands of Americans each month, replaced the old census long form. The same U.S. Code requiring compliance apply to both.

Yes, simply throw away the ACS if you receive it. As for the census, you can give your name and the number of people that live in your house (same as they did in 1790). Leave the rest blank.

My friend, you're gonna need to pick your own battles. U.S. Code Title 13 Chap 7 Section 221 states a person can be fined $100 for failing to answer the Census or ACS. I can't tell you what to do. I got the ACS myself a couple of months ago, and wiped my a** with it. I then put up with the prescribed 90 day period of harassment that is standard OP for the bureau. They finally gave up. Today I got the Census and gave only the info Thomas Jefferson asked for when he was director of the Bureau.
