This was a popular camp meeting song at the turn of the 19th century. One can almost hear the preacher getting up to and warning of the cost of sin. My grand-dad would sing it as he would walk me home across field when I stayed late at his house to watch Dragnet.
this song gives more than it ever promised: some can see the injustice of this world. the USA seems to comprise of all kinds of people. god bless woody.
@thedarkpoets ok so I know woody sings this OF COURSE but so does Hank Williams Sr. so....who wrote it???? lol they both do it like it is there own. lol Thanks
@WilliamEarleDylan Most songs ANYone sings, the song was actually written Before then, Some in the 1800's but they may have changed the words a' tad. Some, to take credit, some, to add their own feelings, and others to allow listeners from another century to understand whats being said.

@supah1337B You are correct though I don't remember the author. (there is a copyright somewhere)

@a376361b many songs were written back in the 1800's, and covered (But credited) by future artists.
