Great job I really enjoyed it. Any books you recommend that I could learn to play some stuff like this? I'm getting a little tired of the songs in my "Mandolin Method 1" book.
Dude just watched your video and completley blown away haha to say the least how long have you been playing for? the reason i ask is that i have been playing a acoustic guitar and teaching myself for about 6 months now and recently bought a mandolin but i am finding it extremely difficult to just know were to start really and who to listen to, could you possibly give me any pointers that would be grea thanks.
@danfoxracing2 Hey man thanks! Hmm.. well learn ur chords... learn ur notes... listen to Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, David Grisman... (and Dave Matthews if ur me lol)... idk yea i had already played guitar and sax before mando so i had some theory behind me to expedite the process. But yea for mando just lots of patience and time with the instrument is a good thing. Like even when ur just hangin out watching tv, have it in your hand.
@bbrizzy89 Yeah cheers for that man i do love the thing its awsome to just chill with, i was going to ask you one more thing if you didnt mind, you know how your video name is focusing your chi (in g) well im kind of unsure what the in g poart means is that the key youyr playing in and if so do when you playing mando do u always have to play a song in a certain key?? thanks for the help
@danfoxracing2 haha great question. Soo... first of all, only the last movement of the song medley thing is Focusing Your Chi. The first movement is actually in G major since it's in E minor i suppose.. but yea the whole last main song Focusing Your Chi is actually in D Dorian for the most part... which translates to the ballpark of G Mixelydian... but there is that pedal bridge.. where i do a call and answer where I vamp on a G chord... and that is where ur focusing ur chi in G lol.
@danfoxracing2 But mandolin- some keys are easier, like D and G, but you can ABSOLUTELY learn to play every mode and key ever on mandolin. Very versatile.
@bbrizzy89 Im not going to lie dude im not following but i guess i will just sort of pick these things up as i learn and get better well i hope haha thanks for all the advice though mate its been really helpfull i will be sure to check out those artists you gave me Speak soon
Thanks! To be honest, when I wrote this, my biggest influence was probably the banjo playing of Béla Fleck, rather than any mandolinist. But yea listen to Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Victor Wooten... that should get you in the ballpark of things like this i guess. My favorite mandolinist is Sam Bush- that might help too.
The only other thing i have a question on is if my research is correct. The A style mando is best for playing wider variaitys of genres is that right? Im pretty sure im going to buy a acoustic electric combo mandolin seems like the best choice to me.
hmm- interesting- i feel like most of the people i look up to do what i do but better and they use F style.. i thought F style just resonated better and stayed in ur lap without falling over better... but i could be wrong. I'd say just find one you can afford and u like how it sounds and go with that. and yea acoustic electric is a very handy feature!
I wanted to learn guiter a couple months ago and i have a nice acoustic that i love and play everyday and i take it with me everywere but just because of you and what you played here im buying a A style mandolin is that good to start with????
Thanks! yea if you're starting out as a mandolinist, acoustic-electric is worthwhile i'd say. That way, you can play in any genre or type of situation that comes your way. Then years from now when your the next virtuoso, get a new acoustic with a really nice sound, once you sorta know what to look for.
dude this is so sick. im thinking about getting an electric mandolin just to make an attempt. is there any plus side to getting a normal acoustic over an electric?
So beautiful...so beautiful my friend. I'm trying to find my own unique sound and this is an inspiration , I too play Mandolin and I am thinking of adding connection to it so I could connect it to guitar amplifier (experiment, what do you think about it ?).Could you send me the tabs of this song,I would really enjoy learning this master peace.
Wow thanks so much for your kind words. To tab this would take a VERY long time and I am not experienced enough with tabs to do that efficiently. haha. But yea get an amplifier connection and get out and jam with people- it's the best way to learn.
You've got a really great sound. It reminds me of a irish folk meets Mike Oldfield.(*LOOK HIM UP!!) Very original. You've inspired me to take up mandola again. Thanks man!
p.s. how do you have yours set up? i just got my epiphone mm130 and it sounds amazing but i have a few fretboard problems around the 12th fret. any suggestions?
I think this is my favorite comment i have ever gotten on any youtube video. Thank you so much. As for your question... I'm not sure what you mean by "set up." Maybe im just not knowledgeable enough but yea i do have some intonation issues and just put up with them. For example, when i tune my E strings, they will be out of tune with each other around the 5th fret. So yea i guess i can't help u with that one.
Ahoy Bryan! I dig this one quite a bit actually, its really cool. Figured I'd just throw in that getting an instrument set-up would just be adjusting the string length, warping of the neck, etc. to make it play as best as possible/fix intonation issues/keep it in good shape.
Yea thanks man and yea I know that meaning of set-up but then how would i respond to the question asked of me except by saying "not recently"? lol and is this ben from school or a different 20 year old ben who plays bass?
extremely good... holy shit, lol.

For reading mandolin tabs. If there is a number 2 for example on A. Do you do an A chord or place a finger on that fret?
xDeAdlYSp1Derx 1 year ago
@xDeAdlYSp1Derx You put your finger on the 2nd fret of the A string. Aw good luck!
