Very interesting work.. my husband and myself have made a lot of furniture for our home in the past... when our daughters were growing up... this was our best hobby.. BUT, I have an advice for you..being 63 years old, I take the liberty to do this... YOU HAVE TO WEAR SAFETY GLOVES WHEN YOU ARE ON THE CUTTING MACHINE.. IT'S NOT A JOKE..
i'm so excited! my husband just got a new table saw and this is a great starter project. especially since he was just talking about how i needed a folding step stool for the kitchen! i can't wait to have one of these!
How do you keep the dowels from working their way out over time, a little glue on the outermost socket, or do you pit it with a brad? Great project BTW. I've got some scraps laying around just screaming to become one of these.
I just made some camping tables just like this only a little taller. Used 1x2's & 1/2 x 3" redwood slats I salvaged from some broken deck chairs. I used 1/4" stove bolts with "T" nutts as connectors but works beautifully. Mine ended up being 24" tall with a table top of 15" x 26". Unbelieveably light. Love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing all your tips.
i just made ur stool today. it is absolutly awsome. im gona always use this stool when ever i make other wood projects. come in very handy and its something i put together my self from scratch.
hi stevi, it is just mindblowing stuff! I am a beginer and iam going to make an earnest attempt to get this stool right, incase i dont like you said i will learn from my mistakes and i will keep on trying till i get it right! thanks a ton.
I made this out of free Craigslist wood and was so proud to show my wife and her response was "you made two right?" I wonder if Rodney Dangerfield ever worked with wood. Thanks for the cool vids and ideas.
Hey Steve. I was wondering if you have any downloadable/printable plans for this project. It would be wonderful to make for my woodworking class in school.
I love all your videos, and plan to watch them all. Keep up the great work.
@stevinmarin alright thanks, I was just hoping that there might be plans so I could share them with my woodshop teacher, as I think this project would be perfect for the class. Well thanks for getting back to me quickly, most uploaders dont. Keep up the awesome work.
I remember watching you build a beautiful chess board some time ago. I also had fun making your little puzzle thing, about the "cube inside a cube" - built from little scraps of wood. Imagine my surprise, when I went on the internet and 'Googled' "How to make a folding stool," and sure enough, my first 'Hit' was you ! You absolutely excel in great ideas, Thanks so much for sharing all this good stuff, not to mention your ideas on keeping the plane "Green" while enjoying them.
I have a couple of trays of that design and would like to have a couple more. Tremendously useful tray. Super sturdy self-locking design. Best I've seen.
Hey steve, i love this design... it seeps so practical and portable. I am looking to make a stool at least 30" tall. Would i be able to use the same design? What ratio should i use when measuring the wood?
@jn3456 Thanks. I'm sure it could be scaled up. It would probably be best to use a hard wood if it's going to take a lot of weight and use. I'm not sure what ratio to use, I just kind of wing it!
@stevinmarin I have a couple of these stools that were made in the 30's sears and roebuck made them for a camping set at least thats what i was told they were made out of real redwood back then mine are a bit taller and wider and have slats across the top instead of solid wood i reverse engineered one out of pine it;s fairly sturdy to sit on but i wouldn't stand on it .....
Hey steve, i love this design... it seeps so practical and portable. I am looking to make a stool at least 30" tall. Would i be able to use the same design? What kind of wood should i use?
Hi Steve. Did the dowel ever loosen up? I wanted to know whether I should sand the dowel more or let the dowel stay tight. I teach wood tech. My students love your videos!
Steve, I am a large man and love this project. What doI need to do to make it fit a larger person? Can it even be done? I made my first one and it turned out good. One thing though. Found out you can't use a forstner bit to drill holes. It makes them too big. Mistake made once!!! Thanks again
@djack79991 Yeah, it's frustrating that forstner bits make a holes a little too small for standard dowels. (Or too big, the other way) I just spent a lot of time sanding my dowels down to size. As for making it sturdier, use a hardwaood, like maple. Pretty tough to break.
Great Project Steve! Thanks for showing this to us. I have a pile of "scrap" and have been looking for something practical - and this just might be the project.
Very very cool ! I made my daughter a small step stool many years ago. We painted it with leftover paint from painting the kitchen so the stool matches the kitchen. You do nice work Steve.
What a good idea such a clever man

@TacoMaster3211 Unfortunately, I don't. I think if you pause the video where I show all the boards, you should be able to sketch out a plan.
