The Food Director should just finds ways rather than just state the obvious. My U.S. public high school was also in a situation like hers, but the student body, with the guidance of teachers, enter competitions and won grants with a lot of money, and support from companies to lead to a "green" and healthier school. We now have a salad bar, locally grown vegetables and fruits sent to school each day, and rooftops/grounds vegetable gardens that provide for the school during spring and summer.
wierd how time and monies is even an issue when its about the health of the next generation of people. i mean nobody would put some cheap quality fuel in their precious cars to save time and money lol but with your own body and with your kids thats alright?
Maybe we could help out our economy if we brought back small-scale agriculture. Local people making money selling fresh produce instead of big processed food companies raking it in. But not everyone has time... why not have fresh produce made into meals and frozen and sold? Some supermarkets do it now... take away some of the preserving agents and we might be on to a winner!

I'm from Poland and we eat healthy food in school, we have some meet like chicken beast, salad, rice or popatoes mash, and every day is a healthy soup with vegetables and the desert like fruit salad, or jogurt with some fruit. I can not imagine how you can serve that junk to the kids?!

It's really sad to see a school struggling with providing healthy food for the children. In my high school, everyone from grade 10-12 in foods class makes the lunches for everyone during second block. We make everything from teriyaki salmon, to turkey wraps and everyone loves it. Also all the food is very healthy, nutritious, and our school doesn't even have to pay staff to prepare it! It's just one little thing that a school could do to make a big difference.

What I would tell the heavy girl and everyone is the best diet is to live like you have been diagnosed with diabetes. I was diagnosed two weeks ago and immediately I sprang into action - going from a total junk-food diet to eating completely healthy. I've already dropped some weight and feel better about everything that's going into my body now. Just convince yourself you already have the disease and you'll be great. And you won't have to prick your fingers 8 times a day!
They should measure the attitude and grades of the kids w/ the dietary changes. i'd bet they have far less attitude and disciplinary problems and better grades w/ the better food.

i worked in Yellowstone National Park when I was 19 and once cooked a dinner for 250 people all by myself. We were a crew of three who would do lunch and dinner for 250-300 adults every day. Every meal was from scratch, soup, salad, meat, bread, rice, potatoes, etc. I cant see why Alice thinks these 5 women cant cook for 450 kids, breakfast and lunch, that should be easy as pie.

What I would tell the heavy girl and everyone is the best diet is to live like you have been diagnosed with diabetes. I was diagnosed two weeks ago and immediately I sprang into action - going from a total junk-food diet to eating completely healthy. I've already dropped some weight and feel better about everything that's going into my body now. Just convince yourself you already have the disease and you'll be great. And you won't have to prick your fingers 8 times a day!

They should measure the attitude and grades of the kids w/ the dietary changes. i'd bet they have far less attitude and disciplinary problems and better grades w/ the better food.

why aren't the kids going into the kitchens maybe and learning to help? Isn't that a lesson you should learn in school? You have to learn to do your laundry. You have to learn to cook for yourself. Just seems like there should be someway to incooperate that as something normal.

i worked in Yellowstone National Park when I was 19 and once cooked a dinner for 250 people all by myself. We were a crew of three who would do lunch and dinner for 250-300 adults every day. Every meal was from scratch, soup, salad, meat, bread, rice, potatoes, etc. I cant see why Alice thinks these 5 women cant cook for 450 kids, breakfast and lunch, that should be easy as pie.

What's sad is that these kids know that something needs to be done but they cannot do anything because people higher up the chain are the ones making all the end decisions. They're not gonna change anything unless if it is cheaper, easier to make and convenient for them. So the food around Huntington stays the same unless principals support the change.
