Carpenter ants only eat decaying wood. They can actually save the life of a tree with core rot because they will eat away only the infected portion of the tree and leave the healthy parts alone.

Funny how infact, they dont 'eat' the tree...

I'm a myrmacologist (reasercher on ants)

and well...there probably was a better way of getting rid of them.

EX: cutting some of the log OR moving the log away...

@iMonument okay, I so here is how this all went down. I live in an area where hurricanes are frequent. I had a tree that I saw racoons crawling out ot the top. Assuming the worst , I called a friend that is a tree guy. He checked it out and said the tree is hallow and if... so I had it cut down. Since I like to remember events in my life, I videoed the ants. Not out of any particular intest in ants min you, just for my memories. Pretty nasty looking things huh?

by the size of the holes - there were thousands of workers - probably hundreds of winged reproductives - all girls - the males are tiny little fu**ers that live somewhere else

The tree was full of them. I used a couple cans of Raid spraying them. All gone now.

Kinda hard to be selective with a can of Hornet & Wasp killer. I figued I would just let them all have it good. Nasty things they are.

U should have killed the winged ones only. Those are queens and males. They will mate and the queen will go off and make a nest which could be your house. The non-flying ones are sterile females that only live two weeks and will not re-produce.

I sprayed them good with some wasp and hornet killer. The reason? The tree was close to my house and there were thousands of them crawing around.
