"Jake Brake" stands for Jacob's Brake- a brand of engine retarders. Its an electronic solenoid that holds the exhaust valve open, and cuts fuel to the injector turning the engine into an air compressor; the driver can pick from 2, 4, or 6 cylinders to 'brake' from.

I love the sound. a lot better than worn out squealing brakes!! nice video too :)

they're a engine brake that uses compression to slow down the engine and slow down the truck..saves the air brake pads....the cool noise is just a perk :) im not sure why its called a 'jake " brake.....just a nickname i guess....hope this helps

The company that made a LOT of engine brakes for trucks back when they first came out was Jacobs. Hence "Jake brake."

I asked the company jacobs brake myself if they made a true jake brake that releases compression instead of an exhaust brake and they said that the displacement is too small to make jake heads that effective enough. I think they said if they made jake heads for a 5.9 it would help slow down as much as an exhast brake and the exhaust brake is cheaper to make.
