This instrument is called Hom Ta, or Mayan Trumpet. They were made from very long gourds or as you see in the video, from a length of bamboo with a gourd attached at the end. The Kukulkan or feathered serpent design is my own idea for dramatic effect. You can see Mayan musicians depicted playing the Hom Ta on the murals of Bonampak.
wow this remind me so much of being in el salvador at night our house was big quiet and beautiful when you looked outside one of the back rooms you could see las ruinas del tazumal i was 5 years old and i remember walking there and feeling "at home"
Thanks for sharing this! Been looking up good Mayan style music to incorporate into a song I'm writing. While I can't exactly emulate the sound of the flutes with General MIDI, this certainly helps!
I wrote this poem while listening to your flute music -
The breath of God blows through my crown, resonates pure vibration through my spine and flows out my feet, healing my earth walk with each step I take~
My friend, a true artist indeed, thankyou for sharing this art and tune with all who come here. I am wondering if these flutes are hard to play/pick up and learn? I would assume that i still being young and having played alot of piano earlier in life may have a good chance? what are your thoughts on this? I really enjoy listening to this, i feel as if i am remembering these sounds... are clay flutes hard to get in australia? how much do they cost? thankyou for any information with which umay giv
The squeaking sound is a birdcall made of bamboo. It emulates the sound of a blackbird from the Yucatan area called "Kao" in the Yucatec Mayan language.
I agree with that guy, mayan music look very similar to japanese music, this may be the answer, the legend said that asians crosed from alaska to america and established on yucatan looking for the meteorite, and there, they stablished the mayan empire, thats why mayan had the eyes a little bit like japanese and the believe of a dragon god,on japanese i dont know the name of the dragon, but they believed in a dragon god,and mayans called Kukul-kan.
