I love her voice. is she still alive?. How do you mean by amazing woman. I am fascinated by her and have not been able to find out anything about her.
No, unfortunately, she died in 2000 (born in 1924). There is now her short biography on Wikipedia, written by her husband, Stephan Poen. He promised he would do it.
@oiseauboheme please share! all of us Elena Cernei fans not fortunate enough to have heard her live would like to know more about your experience, was the voice heard live as beautiful as it is in recordings? was it as meaty and dramatic as recordings lead us to believe it was? what about her stage persona? did you see her in an opera or recital? thanks
Stunning
If I were Samson and saw and heard her I would get the scissors and make MYSELF as bald as a cueball.

Cernei's springtime is a dark brightness, a gay sadness.

In my opinion she is one of the best dark mezzo artists ever.
I get goose bumps just listening to such a full, wonderful voice!
I just love how she uses her big voice too, never strained, unlike a lot of other mezzos.

I agree!
I found "Samson et Dalila" - Kurt Adler Metropolitan version on LP in a Library.
The tenor is Romanian Ludovic Spiess.
