@Siimon204 Just to be clear, are you asking specifically about G1 Optimus Prime in the various G1 cartoons? G1 Optimus Prime also appeared, and had different adventures, in other G1 media, such as comic books and video games. There are also other Optimus Primes in other non-G1 series (eg: Armada, Animated, etc).

@Siimon204 All the continuities are separate. Unicron Trilogy, Animated, Movie, G1, Robots in Disguise and so on are not connected; they're different Optimus Primes.
In the G1 cartoon, before he was Optimus Prime, he was Orion Pax. When Megatron first showed up, Orion was impressed by these new flying robots. Until Megatron shot him, his girlfriend Ariel, and best friend Dion. Alpha Trion rebuilt Orion Pax into a new generation of Autobot, as Optimus Prime. Ariel became Elita One.
War rages on Cybertron, blah, blah, blah, energy reserves are depleted, the Autobots venture into space, are intercepted by the Decepticons, both ships crash on Earth. Four million years later, they're awakened on Earth and rebuilt with Earth forms as alternate modes. They meet Spike and Sparkplug, have adventures and battles on Earth. In the animated movie, set in 2005, the Autobot City on Earth is attacked by Megatron and his goons, and Optimus Prime dies facing off against Megatron.
Hot Rod, a young rookie, is chosen by the Matrix of Leadership, carried all these years by Optimus Prime, to be the new leader, and becomes Rodimus Prime.
Optimus Prime is resurrected as a zombie by the Quintessons, enemies of both the Autobots and Decepticons. The idea is for the Autobots' beloved leader to be programmed to lead them into a trap which will kill them all. However, Optimus Prime breaks free of the programming and springs the trap himself to save his Autobots.
Except that in this episode, "The Return of Optimus Prime" these humans are out in space and come across Optimus Prime's ship before it sets off the trap, and they pull him out. They use his dead body as bait to lure the Autobots into their own trap and infect the Transformers with a disease. And it's pretty successful. To save the world, the uninfected Autobots, Decepticons and Quintessons have to team up to resurrect Optimus Prime properly. They do, and he saves the universe.
Now, this is where things differ. In the US, they aired a 3-episode mini-series called Rebirth. In it, Optimus Prime starts getting visions. Due to a series of accidents, several Autobots and Decepticons team up with humanoid aliens, with the humanoids becoming their heads or guns (Headmasters and Targetmasters). Optimus Prime realizes his visions relate to these new partnerships bringing on a new golden age of Cybertron. They do. (Prime's involvement in this is mostly peripheral.)
However in Japan they aired an entirely different full-length cartoon series instead of Rebirth. It also involves Headmasters and Targetmasters (the series is called "Headmasters"), but the nature of the Headmasters and Targetmasters is much different. And about 3 episodes into the series, Optimus Prime dies again. Most of the old characters are written out or die.
Optimus Prime is resurrected yet again in Japan, much later, as Star Convoy. Galvatron is resurrected as Ultra Megatron...
Optimus Prime (Star Convoy) wins, Ultra Megatron is upgraded into Super Megatron, Star Convoy wins again.

In the comic book series, it's all different. Same character, different events. In the other cartoon shows, it's a different character altogether. There are multiple different continuities, and variations within those continuities. There are probably a good 50 or more Optimus Primes, across the universes.

In the Dreamwave G1 comics, for example, Optimus Prime's origin is different. He was called Optronix and his backstory is different. In one offshoot of G1, after his death in the cartoon movie, he was temporarily resurrected as a Dodge Ram truck. In Animated, Optimus Prime is younger, less experienced, and had never previously met Megatron before. In the live-action film series and Unicron Trilogy, it's different again.
You could seriously fill books with information about all the Optimus Primes in the different continuities (eg: G1, Animated, Unicron, and of course Shattered Glass, where he's actually evil) and micro-continuities (cartoons, comic books, toy bios). Wth, was the Dark Awakening episode before or after the Original Movie, because if it was after the movie how the hell did he die again? And even if he was brought back why isn't he all scratched and fucked up like how he died in the movie?
He died in the movie, he was resurrected as a zombie in "Dark Awakening", he sacrificed himself at the end of that episode, but in "The Return of Optimus Prime" we find out his body was salvaged before the explosion.
After he died in the movie, you could imagine that his body was fixed up somewhat for internment, just as dead people are made up, etc for burial. However the difference between the end of Dark Awakening and the flashback in RoOP is just moments. That's G1 continuity for you.
Last time I remembered Optimus Prime was blown apart from the bomb heading towards the Sun in episode 73 'Dark Awakening', so how is his body in perfect order with both arms still flying the ship like it never blew.

When Optimus Prime died, he passed the Matrix to Ultra Magnus, and became leader. However, he couldn't use the Matrix. Eventually Hot Rod's destiny was revealed when he used the Matrix to destroy Unicron, and was upgraded into Rodimus Prime.
This is not the first time stuff like that has happened, nor was it the last. Alpha Trion held the Matrix without becoming leader, and Sky Garry's position as leader was temporary.

At 2:15-2:53 we finally see one of Rodimus Prime's better moments as he puts together his assault force and commands them just as Optimus Prime would.
everybody blames Hot rod for Prime's death, but megatron still wouldve shot prime anyway, cuz prime decided to talk with him instead of blasting him...what sense does that make, megatron killed a ship full of autobots, whats there to talk about, he picked then to show mercy, thats not hot rods fault, he tried to help prime cause, prime was to busy letting megatron crawl closer to his weapon
However it seemed like prime was trying to talking himself in being as merciless as megatron, sadly prime lead by example. One of which was to show a better side of the transformers nature...sadly it got him killed.
Well, the movie was set in 2005, but the third season was set in 2006. But yes, we're getting further away from the 1980s vision of the future. Where is my nifty jumpsuit and transforming exosuit?
In Japan, season 3 was set in 2010, and Takara's got a campaign this year to celebrate it. Sort of like Hasbro's 25th Anniversary thing.
The Quintessons did not create Orion Pax directly - he came online during the Golden Age, which occurred after the Quintessons were chased off the planet (as seen in FFoD Pt4).
We've seen the Transformers create new Transformers (Dinobots, etc) and there's clearly the concept of age (eg: Kup vs Hot Rod), so there's no reason to believe that every Transformer in seasons 1-4 already existed at the time of Quintesson rule. Esp since nobody alive seems to remember them.
Optimus' death was Hot Rod's fault. However, I don't think that's what made Hot Rod a total dick. He just had no identity as a leader for the two or so seasons he was leader. It would have been cooler if he was more reckless, like he is in this scene. Instead, he's mostly just confused and gives dumb speeches in the episodes.

it seems like i somehow missed a part of the show. i saw her leave in the autobot ambulance, and then him give a big rant and put prime on the melter. then suddenly she was back with robolegs stopping him?
It makes them uncontrollably agressive. But of course they retain a considerable measure of intellegence such as being able to speak and somewhat being able to be reasoned with for a short amount of time before they attack or infect their victims.
Throttlebots? Are they new in this ep? Finally! Last but not least...he has to say that after you have two fighting teams that form giants and then...the rest. Blur was amazingly fast in the movie, but since then he just seems to talk quickly.
I never liked the way the writers punked out Rodimus Prime; Hot Rod had a good coming of age story in the TF movie, but as Rodimus in the series they made him whiney and insecure. As much as I loved Optimus, they should have left him dead or not killed him off in the first place, and allowed Rodimus Prime to grow into a proper leader.

everybody blames Hot rod for Prime's death, but megatron still wouldve shot prime anyway, cuz prime decided to talk with him instead of blasting him...what sense does that make, megatron killed a ship full of autobots, whats there to talk about, he picked then to show mercy, thats not hot rods fault, he tried to help prime cause, prime was to busy letting megatron crawl closer to his weapon

However it seemed like prime was trying to talking himself in being as merciless as megatron, sadly prime lead by example. One of which was to show a better side of the transformers nature...sadly it got him killed.

Well, the movie was set in 2005, but the third season was set in 2006. But yes, we're getting further away from the 1980s vision of the future. Where is my nifty jumpsuit and transforming exosuit?
In Japan, season 3 was set in 2010, and Takara's got a campaign this year to celebrate it. Sort of like Hasbro's 25th Anniversary thing.

The Quintessons did not create Orion Pax directly - he came online during the Golden Age, which occurred after the Quintessons were chased off the planet (as seen in FFoD Pt4).
We've seen the Transformers create new Transformers (Dinobots, etc) and there's clearly the concept of age (eg: Kup vs Hot Rod), so there's no reason to believe that every Transformer in seasons 1-4 already existed at the time of Quintesson rule. Esp since nobody alive seems to remember them.
But Alpha Trion, yes.

Optimus' death was Hot Rod's fault. However, I don't think that's what made Hot Rod a total dick. He just had no identity as a leader for the two or so seasons he was leader. It would have been cooler if he was more reckless, like he is in this scene. Instead, he's mostly just confused and gives dumb speeches in the episodes.

Sparkplug doesn't appear in post-movie episodes; he's probably either dead or retired, since it's 20 years later.
Spike and Carly appear in a few episodes, along with their son Daniel.

It makes them uncontrollably agressive. But of course they retain a considerable measure of intellegence such as being able to speak and somewhat being able to be reasoned with for a short amount of time before they attack or infect their victims.

I never liked the way the writers punked out Rodimus Prime; Hot Rod had a good coming of age story in the TF movie, but as Rodimus in the series they made him whiney and insecure. As much as I loved Optimus, they should have left him dead or not killed him off in the first place, and allowed Rodimus Prime to grow into a proper leader.
Just my little geek-rant...lol
