USSR fell apart and the mafia took over Russia. I lived there. It sucked. We wish communism ended gradually, not all of a sudden. Reagan was there when the cold war ended, but it ended not because of anything he did. In Russia, the party leaders saw an opportunity to still trillions of dollars worth of factories, properties, etc. that was owned by the government. That's where the Russian billionaires came from. Hero? I think you are mistaking BHO for McCain... who was shot down in Vietnam, kept as a POW for 7 years and tortured. HE was given the chance to be freed because his father was an admiral but he chose to stay with his fellow POWs because he knew the chance was unfair.
