How is no power a BAD thing? I love my 92 VW GTI because it does NOT have power windows... these are sporty cars, not Caddies. New VW's are stupid compared to pre 93's, I don't want all that crap that breaks in my car.
oh man..i remember when they use d to say that.."have you driven a ford lately" i havent heard that for a while lol. the escort gt looks just like a fox body mustang, just smaller.
I had an 88 GT and 89 LX SunSport loved them both. I loved these cars you could give it a real beating and they just kept going.. Ahhh Memories.. Wish I could find one cause I would so buy one that was in Mint condition
Hardly ever see these anymore, and I can't remember when I last saw one that still had the original "GT" thing painted on it. I always thought that bit looked silly.
Good car though, very popular used car in the 90s.
I use to have an 87 GT and this car was so fast. I miss it. I ended up blowing the motor ad couldnt find parts for this car anywhere. I remember when they were a dime a dozen at the wreckers.....now your lucky to find one anywhere.
My ex-girlfreind's sister had one of these, 87' GT. It had a bad water pump and they never got around to fixing it. I asked to take it around the block real quick before it gt it's temp up and I belive the redline was 5500rpm IIRC, I took it up to 7k. No rev limiter ;)
man american escorts look shite ! look at the grill and rear tail lights ! even the front indicators are whack, get yourself a uk spec xr3i or rs turbo, a real ford :)
My Mom had a white EXP Sport Coupe... essentially a GT 2 seater, really. Those are rare. It handled well. It was peppy, not quite a GTI of the era, but reasonably responsive. I would not say it was the best in it's class in just about anyway, but they were reliable enough, looked great, efficient and pretty fun to drive. #1 benefit was they were a decent price for what you got. For 9 grand you could get a loaded one, not too easy to find a new GTI then for that cheap.
There is a clean 87 one for sale, $300 in my hood. VERY straight, burgundy, clean. The ad on the window says "does not start". I am curious. Not sure what it needs. Common issues?
@bestamerica Will you shut up about lights? The rear lights are evidently adequate as this car was one of the safest of it's time. Evidently the front is also adequate as they didn't overheat much. Get your facts right before posting.
@bestamerica One thing you're missing is there was an air scoop in the middle of the lower spoiler in the front. This pushed air up into the radiator, so the smaller slots was a non-issue. I had a black '87 GT with all the option minus tilt steering and cruise control. 12 years, 165,000 miles. Never a major breakdown, original clutch! Ended up donating it but it still ran fine and still got 450 miles per tank. Fun to drive. People used to make me open the door to show them the passive seat belt
My brother had one with similar mileage... I assume though you're aware that the GT used a German built Mazda engine instead of a Ford engine- hence its reliability.
Actually, it is not the Mazda engine, that came around 1991 when the GT had the Mazda 1.8L engine. Mine has the 1.9 EFI HO (high output!) engine rated at 115 HP. Has 302,xxx as of today!
@debrajl529 Ugly? Really? Heck I think it looks pretty darn good for an 80's "sporty" hatch. Ground effects, big fog lights, spoiler all on a little coupe body. Honestly compare it to other FWD cars from 1987 and it looks pretty good if you ask me! Almost looks like some Japanese sport hatches from the era like say a Toyota Levin GTV. Nothing wrong with that!
@MN12BIRD Say what? Are you serious? The Escort looks NOTHING like a Levin. Two totally different animals. It doesn't look like the AE86 OR AE92 Levins. Maybe, if you squint your eyes real hard, they look the same. :/
I am glad I bought a 87 Turbo Sprint and 92 VW GTI 16v...but when the 86 Escort GT came out I was totally taken by it's styling. The performance improved in the later generation, but they are still good looking cars. Thanks for the commercial.
I bought a GT new in January 1988. I still have it and the only things it has required is standard maintenance and just recently a new clutch. I still average 26mpg around town and 37mpg on the highway. It loves to be driven hard and can take the twist roads with ease because it has so much low-end torque that modern 4-valve engines lack. And it still looks good, too, with original paint.
I bought a white one new, in '87, and I still have her. Drove it for 2 winters, then winter stored her since. It has only 77,000 kms. Talk about mint!! Totally original, with the execption of the exhaust, and tires. 1 owner, and only 1 driver for 21 yrs. Kinda cool huh? Beat that.LMAO. Really not sure what to do with her at this point. Sell or hang on. I love the dear little thing. Manual of course. She is sporty, quick, and tight as the day she was new. Really, just broken in.
That awsome man, i worked at a Ford Dealer back then as a porter, and i beat the heck out of those cars. I got to give it one thing, you hardly ever saw an Escort in for any problems, beside maint. stuff. Good little cars, i would keep it.
I had a red 87 Escort GT during college -- was a lot of fun and easily blew the doors off the other little compact cars of the day -- wish I'd taken better care of mine then...I know better now. Looking to buy one in excellent condition if anyone wants to sell to good home. Let me know!!!
