The reason why the parents want boys is because for thousands and thousands of years, when girls would get married, it would automatically make them part of their husband's family, and no longer part of their parent's family; meaning that the parents (now under a 1 child policy) would have no one to take care of them in their own age. If they had a son, then the son would remain in the family and take care of the parents in their old age.
