Excellent song! I was born and raised in Macclesfield and hold Jodrell Bank close to my heart. I now live in Wiltshire. It's the first thing you look for on the horizon when climbing any road out into the Peak District. Hope it's around for a few years yet, not only for the public to gaze in awe at, but also for those lucky enough to be involved in astronomy and astrophysics at UMIST.

I visited Jodrell Bank in 1987 when I lived in Crewe. It was closed to the public when I got there, but they let me in anyway since there was a school group there. It was great!

Having lived close to the lovell telescope for the pas 11 years it becomes part of your every day life....driving past it to work every day..cycling past in the summer..Its become a real important fixture of this part of Cheshire. Dont forget the history of it..Tracing Sputnik 1, the only telescope capable of tracking Sputnik's booster rocket by radar.. Keep the funky telescope..!! :-)

I'm afraid it's quite a complicated question of economics, and shutting it down would be very short sighted.

It is a national pride, it is in the forefront of its field of research, and england would look very bad if it were shut down, since it is an integral part of a number of international research projects.

I also know first hand that it is an inspiration to aspiring scientists; it was a visit there that made me decide to study physics. England needs more Scientists.
