  • How is it that one sixth of the gravity portraying itself in the universe has no known source? And that the collective gravity of all galaxies and stars want to slow down the expansion of the universe, yet it is speeding up?

  • @Jonayofsweden Dark matter and dark energy, respectively. :P

  • Banana trees walk

  • PLease tell me he's going to be 12+ when he watches this because the bit about the cows isn't good for anyone younger

  • Oh dear... Please... Planes don't propagate the myth of equal transit times. Flight has little to do with the shape of the wing. In fact you could fly with doors as wings, as long as you get the angle of attack right.

There is something called the coanda effect that deflects the air downwards and then due to newtons third law an equal an opposite force pushes the wing upwards.

Actually it is theoretically impossible to fly if air from the top and the bottom reaches the end at the same time.

  • Is that bad if i completely understood what he meant when he explained where babies come from?

  • Okay ... About the airplane. WRONG. The air that goes over top of the wing DOES NOT HAVE TO REACH THE BACK OF THE WING AT THE SAME TIME AS THE AIR THAT GOES BELOW THE WING, so NO, there is no 'low pressure, high pressure' zone. The air that goes over top of the wing is angled downward by the shape of the wing, so when it reaches the back end of the wing, the air goes down. Quite fast. Now, according to Newton's 3rd law, there is an opposite reaction to this: the plane wing is pushes up.

  • @anonmusNO1 Actually, you're wrong. its called Bernoulli's principle. It very clearly states that as the velocity of a fluid increases, the pressure decreases. So, in this case the fluid (Air) is moving very quickly over the rounded top making it have a low pressure. the air on the bottom, is moving slower, therefor it has a higher pressure, forcing the plane upward.

  • @ImAProudMileyFan Bernoulli's principle is true. However, nowhere in the gas laws is there a statement that says that when a gas is separated by an object, creating two streams of fluid (air) do those streams have to take equal times to transverse the object in question (the wing). Since the streams do not have to make the transit in equal times, they don't. The one over the wing moves the same speed as the one under the wing. No speed difference, no Bernoulli principle, no pressure difference.

  • @anonmusNO1 How stupid are you?

  • @ImAProudMileyFan Not very. And that question is inherently flawed, because you give no reason for making that assumption. Here is a very good article I found -- I am not wrong, and neither are you ... exactly. If you are a true nerdfighter, you will read the article. If not, you are a straveling, an elf-skin, a dried neat's tongue, and a stock-fish, thou whoreson, senseless villian!

(Go to straight dope (one word) dot com and enter 'airplanes' in the search bar, it is the ninth article down)

  • NOOOO! I accidentally clicked "dislike"... Someone kill me.

  • 3:10 lololol

  • the plane thing isnt true

  • "How does the internet work?"

"Well Henry, your brother and I make videos and upload them onto this site called YouTube-"

Wait... Henry has a brother... Hank made a mistake ;)

  • Until I saw this video, I wasn't sure why fire hurt. I'm 13.

    Thanks Hank!!!! DFTBA

  • I'm showing this to my niece.

  • QUESTION TIME OVER! lmao

  • what made me pee and question is at 1:09 Henry asks how the internet work and Hank say well your brother and i. and Henry doesnt have a brother but Hank has a brother. I had to watch it 5 times before i was certain of what he said loooool :-)

  • @rent418 Don't worry, there will be another one, and all will be true in the end.

  • Dang i thought this would be educational which is kinda was except for the KNOCKED UP question. thanks now i gotta distract my 7 year old from asking ;)

  • Hank just answered a ton of my questions about life. And I'm 19.

  • If planes work like that, how can planes fly upside-down? huh?

  • I can't help but think the video bit of the Obi-Wan Earth is counter intuitive. I mean, when you say 'now we are not in the sun's light' you DO know that the sun is on Obi-Wan's face... right?

  • This is probably my favorite vlogbrothers video of all time! This and the "letter to the aliens" is the reason I subscribed. Thank you both for being awesome.

  • "Why don't trees move?"

'Cause they're trees, so they don't move.

  • Someone should show Arthur Weasley this video.

  • When Henry watches this, he's going to be confused at the bit where you explain sunlight, because when you said, "Now, we are in the dark," the face of Obi Wan was in the actual sunlight.

  • I laughed so hard at the horcrux bit that I had to pause the video. XD

  • My answer to all the questions: Magic

  • "Your brother and I make videos" lol. Fail

  • I kinda want to have a baby now (though, no, not now, I'm only 18) so I can raise him/her with vlogbrother video's.

  • So.... You make video's with henry's brother? XD

  • When you said that my hands were made of chemicals...I had to stop and stare at them for a moment.

  • HIS brother and you upload videos to a site calle youtube?

  • Your airplane pressure explanation isn't correct.

  • I LOVE THIS MAN!!! :)

  • Arthur Weasly would appreciate this video :)

  • Problem with the plane answer: Then how do planes fly upside down?

  • Is this the original, clippy version of Scishow?

  • I love how he has doesn't hesitate to tell where hamburgers come from and but has to speed halfway through the Baby talk XD

  • Hank looks so sad when he pretends to be Henry...

  • @Darthmaud88 Henry-Hank is distressed by all the confusion and questions bouncing around in his cute little Henry-Hank head.

  • Okay depending on what age henrey would be while seeing this but as hank portrays him i'd guess 5-8 and at that age after the scientific questions his responce would be "Whaaaaat?"

  • "Why is the sky blue?"

    "Cuz."

    TFIOS <3

  • Loved the baby answer!

  • 1:05

    how does the internet work?

well henry your brother and i...

    wait.... your brother and i?????

  • @pummylove that's the proper grammar

  • magnets, how do they work?

  • @dingo596 well...if you exclude the question of "what is charge?" that's fairly simple to explain...ask wiki, if you don't get it still then tell me and i shall explain it to you the best i can.

    best wishes :D

  • @eladps well, this is the apocalypse

  • @dingo596 huh?

  • @eladps chzb . gr/bik5Y0

  • Wait, what?

Around 1:02 Hank says "Well, Henry, your brother and I-"

    I think I died.

  • my brother just walked in and asked if i was watching Bill Nye.,,,

  • It's kind of cool how Nerdfighteria has two people to rally behind; Hank for the Science nerds, and John for the Literature nerds. It makes for more specialized discussions and overall better discourse.

  • FALSE. The sun is moving through the universe along with all other celestial bodies. and you call yourself a man of science... tsk tsk tsk.

  • Is it me or does this all sound extremely cute? :D

  • it's the opposite of getting knocked down. *HAHAHAHAHA-no*

  • Babies come from zygotes which, if you are patient enough and people in your local community aren't religious zealots forcing their will on schools, you will learn about in the future. Knocked up is a euphemism for the formation of a zygote. BOOM, taught better than Hank

  • IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS NERDFIGHTARIA, THANK GOD THAT HENRY WILL GROW UP KNOWING EVERYTHING OF THE WOLD.

  • No Hank! You're wrong! Planes can fly upside down too. So the shape of the wing is not the reason they fly!

Why do they fly? I don't know...but if it was just the wing, then they couldn't fly upside down!

  • @amiablehacker well, I think at that point its falling with style...

  • @freezie656 toy story references are cool

  • That was so cute :)

  • This video genuinely taught me about why fire actually hurts and why planes stay up. I'm 18 and at university...

  • 2:04 the look on your face portrays enjoyment of the horrors you are about to inflict upon this child!

  • wait if that's why planes fly, how do they fly upside down?

  • Best answer to where do babies come from. :)

  • I was watching this and thought...what if Henry doesn't know who Obi-Wan is!

    But then I was sensible.

  • What's a horcrux?

Young man, where did you hear that word?

What does getting knocked up mean?

It's... the opposite of getting knocked down. Question time over.

But that doesn't make any sense.

    QUESTION TIME OVER.

  • I like your hat, Henry.

  • 3:13

Someone show this to Arthur Weasley. His life-long dream could finally come true.

  • The hat.

  • OMG XD Henry might become a vegetarian after you explain the hamburger stuff XD

  • hahaha so funny, if i get asked wath is sex? i wil answer... It a very very fun thing that only grown up are alowd to do. Hahaha

  • @andtheducksaysmoo because when Wilbur was playing with the plane he switch the controls to default. That got Orville very mad, so he switch them back to inverted, and made that the default settings... The real question is why is 007 Goldeneye inverted?

  • So, how do planes fly inverted?

  • Maybe you should just give him the Time Traveler Essentials shirt?

  • xkcd no. 803

  • @thisuserpwnsnoobs Exactly, Bernoulli's principle is a real thing but it has little to nothing to do with actual flight.

  • 1:04 he said "your brother and I" instead of "your dad and I"

  • the thing about the cows made me laugh a lot.

  • "What is a Horcrux?"

"Young man, where did you hear that word????"

xD I was a super inquisitive kid (still am, actually), and it would have been awesome to have an uncle like Hank. <3

  • I love you two :D I bet you're awesome friends to everyone in your friend-communtiy-whatever-ships...

  • I said the, "What does getting knocked up mean?" part to my friend in a cute voice, the in a normal voice, "Uhhhhh.... It's... The opposite of getting knocked down. Question time over!" Cute voice, "But that doesn't-" Normal, yet angrier, voice, "QUESTION TIME OVER!!!!!!"

She loved it. She didn't quite get it until I explained it because she doesn't watch vlogbrothers' videos though.

  • When Hank said "I am smart in the ways that my brother is stupid" I instinctively said " STUPID IS A BAD WORD!"

Apparently, I still think like a five year old.

  • Please record the first time you show Henry this video....then the second time when he's in his teens

  • it's worrying how much i learned here...

  • While the difference in the upper and lower curvature of an airplane's wings does does provide some lift, it is nowhere near enough to actually keep an airplane flying. In fact, it is the downward deflection of the airstream as it travels across the wing that provides lift; this is why planes are capable of flying upside down.

  • Aw man, I thought when "Henry" asked "How to airplanes stay up?" Hank was going to say, "Because angels carry them" :P

  • I think parts of children come from there uncle and even their half brothers dad even when they have the same mom. I'm an artist and my parents arn't and my uncle is and my half brothers dad is a nerdfighter and my parents think your a bad influence. So there you go those jeans are in their somewhere.

  • "What is a Horcrux?"

*gasp* "YOUNG MAN, where did you hear that word?!"

    Best. Thing. Ever.

  • 2:18 BEST. MOMENT. EVAR.

  • My favorite Hank video to date. :)

  • Great vid, dftba, but in point of fact, the high pressure does not in fact PUSH the plane up, but the low pressure PULLS the plane up. Just thought you oughta know.

  • @SuTVlogs - Not to be a jerk, but 'In point of fact,' the high pressure does indeed PUSH the plane up.

The only currently recognized "Pulling" forces in the universe are gravitation, magnetic dissimilarity, and electrical dissimilarity.

All pressure differences are measured in the net force given off by all atomic collisions between a fluid (in this case air) and a solid (the plane's wing).

These molecular collisions are in fact tiny electrical similarity based repulsive forces, meaning a push.

  • When Henry is older there should be a video of him watching this video, so we can see his reaction to the different answers.

  • How do planes stay up?

I'm SO directing Mr. Weasley to this video :)

  • @Whiffinity Hahaha!

  • I saw the Wright brothers plane and those wings were curved the same on the top and the bottom!

  • I want to see John's answers to these questions.

Oh and a remix when Henry actually starts asking these questions,

  • How does an airplane fly upside-down?

  • What is a horcrux? XD

  • @papercutoutgirl I take it you read harry potter.

  • Thx man!

  • ...

  • Aww

  • what's a horcrux?

where did you hear that word?

  • His guitar looks like it says "sihl".

  • You probably could have just used the Sun to represent the Sun seeing as one side of Obi Wan Kenobi's head was actually in daylight while the other was dark.

  • perhaps the yeti's smart genes will be stronger than johns literacy genes

  • @Jexbinnam

But it is refreshingly honest. I karnivor. I can has cheezbrgrs.

  • Are those chemicals quarks?

  • Best explanation of how babies are made. Ever.

  • Hank is still a child. In our hearts. And in his.

  • I really really hope my children will ask me what a Horcrux is. Well, any Harry Potter question will do, but I hope they will ask me. I"ll be so proud of them.

  • Like if when Hank said your hand is made of chemicals you looked at your hand in wonder.

  • "What is a Horcrux?"

"Young man, where did you hear that word??"

    Hah, genius.

  • your description of where hamburgers come from made me NEVER want to eat them again. not that i do, anyway.

    are you a vegetarian?

  • Haha, I burst out laughing at the Horcrux question and answer. :D That was genious.

  • That's right your arms are made of chemicals! lol

  • Best earth rotation explanation ever lol.

  • I couldn't stop laughing during and after the hamburger question

  • He acts like a little boy, really well

  • I HAVE THAT COWBOY SHERIFF HAT

  • haploid gametes :D

  • After 2:04 things got interesting.

  • Omg, I love your impression of little Henry XD with the hat and everything lol.

  • He is gonna be SOOO confused when he sees these

  • Actually, airplanes don't work like that! The wings are actually curved on both sides; the air follows the curve, and when the curve ends, the air continues at the same angle - which is a downwards angle. Since the air is forced down, the airplane goes up!

After all, there isn't any reason why the air on top of the wing needs to go faster - it doesn't need to maintain its position relative to the air below. That's what makes fluids fluid!

  • Henry: What does getting 'knocked-up' mean?

Hank: Uhhh... Let's return to Horcruxes, shall we? O.o

  • NO but seriously i need to know what is a horcrux ???

  • Those genes have got to be in there somewhere.Did hank do something the the yetti?

  • @gl3bm >Q<

  • I think you meant to say, "your FATHER and I."

  • Astounding, We cannot believe Harry Potter 7 ended up being leaked out on-line! Watch it now in watchharry. us

  • I laughed for ten straight minutes at the Horcrux joke xD

  • So I've been a science major for about 3 years now, but it was Hank's explanation that actually helped me figure out why airplanes stay in the air.

  • I'm seventeen... I now know why the sky is blue.

  • Ligers aren't from the same species. :(

  • Loled hard at the horcrux bit

  • My dad told me that the sky is blue because it reflects off the ocean... I believed that until this day. Thanks Hank

  • Hank, you could have used the actually sunlight coming through your window for that demonstration.

  • whats a horcux!? XD

  • I loved that you specified the male and female must be from the same species. Ten points from me - learning the definitions of species and population terms for Biology D:

  • "So if were on Obi-wan Kenobi's face here..." I love it so much!!! DFTBA

  • U think when hank has kids he/she will make vlogs with henry in the future!?

  • 3:09 epic win

  • @BigPangin

    It's all about perspective

  • i know the internet works. bill gates has it in his pocket.

  • I would love to be Henry Green. One day you get to watch all these videos that your dad and uncle made.

  • Hey. I love the videos but there was one answer that wasnt entirely correct. Actually, the sky is blue because when light hits dusts and/or gases in the atmosphere it scatters in a prossess called, go figure, scattering. Blue light is scttered more than other light colors. You were mostly right though, i realize. I just learned about this in school and wantef to sound smart. :) DFTBA

  • lol i love the end. too funny. :))))

  • "What is a horcrux?"

"Young man, where did you hear that word?"

    ...

    "What's a--what's a horcrux?"

"I'm not even going to tell you, Harry, you'll find out soon enough."

  • I love how Hank answered Henry's question about where babies come from, but considered asking about a Horcrux totally unacceptable.

  • The airfoil explanation is incorrect. The lift that a plane experiences is not due to Bernoulli's Principle as stated, but simply the force generated by pushing the air down. And Newton's 3rd makes it very clear what happens when you push things down -- you get pushed up!

  • "Your brother and I"? I think you mean, "your father and I."

  • Why did Henry's hair change from brown as a baby to blonde as a toddler?

  • @dolphin64575 newborn babys often have dark hair and light blue eyes.. it change after.... my hair was almoast all white at age of 6 but black as age of 1 day :D

  • I answered my son's question with the haploid answer.

  • "haploid gamete" REDUNDANT! hahaha =D

  • Ah I love sun shiny day's

  • "Well Henry, your BROTHER and I make videos and upload them onto a site called Youtube..."

I was unaware that Henry had a brother and you make videos with him :)

  • There is always the wonderful answer from parents, "because I said so."

  • klik on pause ent then klik on 8 then you hear sssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • the obi one kanobi head (sry if i failed at spelling it) was a fail. when u said that the face was us and when it was pointing away from the lightsaber it was night the window light was shining all over it

i am also sorry if that made no sense what so ever

  • The sun is not staying in one position... Its orbiting another larger sun in the milky way. And that larger sun is orbiting another larger sun (or maybe a black hole)
