I am from Hong Kong and your Cantonese is not bad atall !!!! You really achieved a lot in 3 years, and you should be proud of yourself, cuz it is more difficult to learn Cantonese than Mandarin.

You speak very fluent Cantonese, but you probably have picked up some "Toi Shan" accent from somewhere like China Towns of your country. However, Most Cantonese can't speal English as fluent as the way you speak Cantonese. So don't feel bad about your Cantonese.

Cantonese is much harder to learn than Mandarin. I believe cantonese has 7 tones and Mandarin only 4. You are doing great! Don't take bad comments to heart. Accents don't matter in the real world. Being able to understand each other is most important and I certaintly understand every word you said. Congrats!

You're absolutely right! Native Mandarin speakers often have difficulty with Cantonese tones because there are more tones in Cantonese than Mandarin.

On the flip side, Cantonese speakers often don't have difficulty with Mandarin tones but have difficulty with the pronunciation of some words like 只 because of the "r" sounding beginning.

You're already speaking quite good Cantonese compared to some Chinese who are raised up outside China/Hong Kong. So don't be too harsh on yourself.

I have the same problem as a Cantonese speaking person learning Mandarin (so I can talk with my girlfriend in her language, hehe...). Even though many words are like the same, it's hard to get the pronunciation right.

Anyways, keep up the good work and don't give up :)

I am learning German as a native Chinese and I know how you feel. Sometimes it is annoying hearing German people complain about how weird my German is. But then I will say back, my native language gives me ZERO advantage into German, The same like you, you should tell them how hard it is as foreigners to learn Cantonese.
