Dude, I watched and LOVED this guy's career. I grew up in the Bay Area a 49ers fan for life...but I asked for an Earl Campbell jersey for Christmas in 1979! This guy was ALL WORLD.
Another encounter vs. Tatum not shown on this reel had Campbell break into the open field. Between him and the goal line was Tatum. Both butted heads midfield. Tatum sprawled back five yards and Campbell sailed off into the end zone. Tatum was a badass, but Campbell always owned Tatum. Always.
@TheMarvelous714 At least Earl didn't go backwards, he sort of went sideways and fell into the end zone. Than he was helped off the field. I think I would need a stretcher myself.
Remember the three (non-racist) "little monkey" comments made by Cosell? Who was #2 about??
#1. "That little monkey. The theory was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)
#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt/kickoff return?) EARL CAMPBELL???
#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)
He gave his body for the game. Sadly all those carries and the astroturf wore him down he paid for it years later. He now has had 3 vertebrae removed, bone spurs, drop foot, chronic knee pain. He can't walk without using a wheelchair and he has to sleep on a chair because he can't sleep on a bed because of his back. He may have been a very great running back but eventually it all came back to bite him.
Tatum decimated Campbell so badly that ole Earl thereafeter FEARED any potential contact with The Assassin... this was confirmed by many of Campbell's teammates therafter. CAMPBELL WAS AFRAID OF THE ASSASSIN!!!!!!! Tatum OWNED Campbell easily!!!! Many of Earl's teammates later would confirm that Earl FEARED any further future contact with The Assassin! Campbell would sometimes shiver just knowing he had to face Tatum's team any time thereafter. Just ask Campbell's old teammates about that.
@DevillDogg Sorry but I was one of Earls teammates and you, my friend, have been fed some pretty nasty crap. Earl was afraid of no one except God himself. Period.
@DevillDogg I believe both Campbell and Tatum were knocked silly on that play. But Campbell was no wide receiver. He was a huge, powerful fullback. No DB was going to frighten him.
@DevillDogg I m sorry but that such an empty comment without any substance. How do you know he feared Tatum. Did he confess to you? No. Tatum owned Capmbell. Did he buy him? Owned. lol. Such a childish word. And of course, as usual, your account is suspended so you can t argue with others. Anyway, it would be a waste of time.
haha i feel bad for that linebacker he ran over at 1:14.....he prolly sees this classic footage all the time knowing that he was the guy that got his shit rocked lol
Lifetime Steeler fan here and I remember Earl Campbell as a beast......Great player loved to watch him play against anyone but the Steelers......Don't know his career numbers vs Pittsburgh but he was well respected in the 'burgh
Seriously has there been anyone like him ever? "Scuze me, pardon me, coming through, end zone to get to, 'scuze me...." He was a cross between a tank and a train. The original Razorback. On roids, breathing fire always with a polite smile.
OJ would stiff arm you. Sanders would sidestep you. Others would just flat out outrun you. But Campbell would stop, kick your ass, and THEN keep going, LOL!
@yoadrie Until he meet a man by the name of Jack "The Assassin" Tatum. That hit was the old and better brother to the Christian Okoye and Steve Atwater hit.
@Djganem23 You mean Oilers / Titans owner Bud Adams wanted the City of Houston to give him the money to build a stadium. The people of Houston told him to go to hell- If you want a new stadium, build it with your own money, not the tax payers.
Did you see that DB (#31) he took for like a 20 yard ride! Cambell was one of those country boys that probably never touched a bar bell. Just moma's good cookin and he's ready to run right over you.
It's a shame the Oilers had no offense built around him. He was the one man show. Every down, just give the ball to Earl. Earl Campbell can barely even walk anymore due to all these hits he took on his body in his short career. If they would've built an offense around him, a good QB, some WR's he probably wouldn't in bad shape today, but how can you not love a RB with the balls to plow right through guys? He used to run right out his jersey!
my step dad played for oilers one year after and he was like wow thats the biggest offensive lineman ive ever seen lol and also he said he was dumber than a brick but the nicest guys youll meet
@Deadshot089 you're wrong again, i was a houston oilers fan, to bad that this big team in no longer playing in this beautiful city "HOUSTON" but i still have big memories of my team HOUSTON OILERS, don't make me write it again, thank you.
@arqsergioprieto I often wondered if the Oilers fortunes would have been considerably different had they a good passing game to go along with their running game.
I honestly feel sorry for the linebackers and skinny ass corners who faced this guy. Campbells thighs are bigger then most peoples waists. That's like, not even fair. Lol
@ThundaCat305 Dude are u high all those players are good don't get me wrong but compared to Earl Campbell he dominates. I always liked his "anti-celebration" when he scored. He would just make a slow jogging turn in the end zone and casually let the ball drop rom his hand like he was just done with it. Very cool.
It was once said, "The problem with Earl Campbell is, he has the speed to go to the oustide and score, but given the chance, he'd preffer to make the secondary pay."
It appears, Earl was addicted to taking hits, and making the defense just look weak.
Earl made me a pro football fan, but since he stood on the field decades ago, no one else has ever played with his power, and his dignity...no chest beating, no non sense celebrations...just putting the ball down and walking away..his job
well said! i loved earl campbell! what a player. the best combo of speed and pure power i've ever seen. he just played the game the right way, as you said.
1:03 Earl looks like the incredible hulk or some kind of super hero running the ball! If he played today everybody even Ray Lewis would be scared to tackle or Earl and that's a fact!
@lildood24 He had to face Jack Lambert twice a year and Ray Lewis couldn't carry Lamberts jockstrap. He also did pretty good against Butkus but they didn't play that often. The hit from Jack Tatum where Tatum hit him at the one and he scores crossing the goal line backwards is incredible
they way i see it, it's not the Texans' fault that Bud Adams is a piece of shit. he's the fucktard that stole the team from our city and the Texans just came in to give us some semblance of an NFL team again. sure, we don't have the great traditions of the oilers anymore, but the nfl could have granted the 32nd franchise to anyone vying for it at the time. Orlando, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Oklahoma. we could have been stuck with the fucking COWBOYS. i say thank GOD for the texans.
It is a shame that this team does not exist anymore. What kind of bullshit is that? To take a man's team away from him, To me is inconceivable.... I hope you guy's and girls got over this and don't support any of the old owners products. To live without my Jets would be the devastating.... Who do you root for now The Texans or the Titans? If anybody has time, write me back. I love to talk football.
hEY jET FIGHTER666....Speaking for me ... I despise the NFL now.. This bullshit franchise called the Texans SUCKS!!! I still have around 25 Ticket stubs from Oilers games in the mid 80's to early 90's.. They were a beloved team here no doubt.. Go Longhorns!! I hate the Cowboys as much as the Steelers too.
What really bugs me is when a team is stolen, there nick name should not be able to be taken also!!!! It should not be the Indianapolis Colts! Or the St. Louis Rams. Or the Arizona Cardinals. If I am the commish, I would allow the Ravens to switch their name back to the Colts, and St. Louis to switch their name back to the Cardinals. Let Arizona and Indianapolis make up their own new nick names!
Agreed , In most cases. To be honest I do like what Tenn and Houston did.I like the old school names There are two sides to the coin.. Say the Jets moved to L..A..[ God Forbid] I would rather root for the L.A. Jets than nothing[ I think?] Boy, That a hard thing to even think about.. maybe your right? Then I would have to root for the Giants? Oh God no!!] Well maybe it would be o.k. I might see a super bowl before i die. lol I just hope that a team does not have to move again.Good luck on Sunday
Good point. I was a little bit negligent not to think of the situation if I had lost my home team (Pats, sorry). I could see myself rooting for the Memphis Patriots if something like that were to happen. Until I guess hopefully another team showed up. Good luck with your Jets today (not that I really mean it). With the Pats in a bye week, not sure if they will carry Ravens/Broncos or Jets/Dolphins. Either one should be good.
Campbell was a wrecking ball. Just ask Jack Tatum and Isiah Robinson. It's too bad the Oilers never got to the Superbowl for him to showcase his talent.
Earl Campbell, John Riggins, Gerald Riggs, Otis Anderson, William Andrews. Great North South runners of the late 70's early 80's. Even Walter Payton would lower the shoulder. I'll take a power back any day of the week.. Bradon Jacobs has the potential but Giants pass alot but he is probably the best we got right now for a power back.
Campbell, Riggins, Otis Anderson,Gerald Riggs, 4 great power backs of the 80's that usually are left out in top 10 great backs. I love the Power backs just where defense down. then again I am skins fan so I do miss the Riggins and power game we had.
I think you folks down in Houston should petition to rename the Houston Texans to the Houston Oilers... and also get the old Oilers logo and uniforms changed back. Texans?!!! They were the name of a shitpump AFL club which moved to KC and changed their name to the Chiefs. I'm a Vikings fan but I say the NFL is not complete without the Oilers.
As a former Oilers fan I love your statement. But the fact remains the asshole Bud Adams has retired that name. Even after he dies which I hope is soon, Houston can not use the name Oilers. Most Houston fans would love the name change. They can not do it. Go Vikes.
Most might not remember but I believe the 80 yard run at 0:16 sec. was his 32nd carry of the night and plus he outran the safety to the end-zone. At the University of Texas his senior year, "Thunder and lightning", the "Thumper" and the "Tyler Rose" were some of his knicknames.
Without a doubt the greatest combination of size, speed and will on a severely subpar team...at least when he headed to the sideline he'd stiffarm and continue upfield and dind't run out of bounds like Franco Harris usually did...
My new guy is Jason Whitten. He is one tough mother, but totally low key. He's a true soldier. I am "luke" on Romo, and this is his yr to show something. He need to be a football player now, not a celebrity. I named my son Troy. (Which Pleased The Hell Out Of My Wife) Gotta love football!
It sucks getting old, but I am glad I was able to be a kid playing little league and pop warner football in the 70's, and able to have watched all of the great athletes of that era, like Pete Rose, Staubach, Bradshaw, Reggie Jackson in his prime, even Pele, Borg, etc etc. (Not To Mention The RocknRoll) Good Stuff!
Agee. Saw Reggie hit a Grand Slam in Oakland Alameda County Stadium 1980. I was a Steelers fan but this guy was a thorn in our side. Earl Cambell was the toughest most badass Football player who ever lived. You had to have balls of steel just to try and tackle him. Saw him carrie six hall of fame Steelers ten or twenty yards many times. Nolan Ryan was another site to see. When he was on fire he was unhittable. Gave all of my Baseball and Football cards from our era to my son.
It was just plain sad to see him like that after what he was like in football. But hey, that's what happens when you play football and the consequences you may suffer later on in life. I'm not bashing him but I'm only saying the facts that happen in football.
Earl had a condition with his knees/legs, before he even played football. I doubt he knew it would end up that bad. The guy was a full blown stud. I lived in Texas back when he played for the Longhorns, and watched him play when I was a kid. (Watched him run the "FK" over guys)! I have the utmost respect for him. He is a mild mannered guy that was a monster on the field. The only other back that I can remember that was somewhat like Earl, was John Riggins of the Redskins.
Its extremely rare that I agree with a cowboy fan....in fact, this may be the one and only time it will happen. Your comment was dead on accurate. Earl, Riggins and Csonka were the running backs that I loved to watch. Pure power and guts. No stupid dance celebrations. Just class and no bullshit! Good comment. This comes from a Redskin Texan/Oiler fan.
Thanks, my dad got transfered and we moved to Dallas. 1975-78'. I met Staubach through my Pop Warner coach who he was friends with, and became a Cowboys fan. Born in WI, my dad still gives me crap about being more of a Dallas than a Greenbay fan. A lot of ppl hate Dallas, but anyone who's lived in Texas knows the dedication to football, and thats their team. Secondly, aside from Thomas Hollywood Henderson, Dallas was never the showboat type team, like we have had in recent yrs, Glad thats done!
As great as he was back then today Earl Campbell is literally a gimp. All those years of the hits, tackles, and injuries from football took its toll later in his life. Today, he is confined to a wheelchair and has to sleep on a chair. He has severe arthritis in his knees and congenital back condition that was aggravated football. In 2007 he had 3 large bone spurs removed from his body and its only gotten worse. When I saw him in a Texas football game a few years back. continue.
Toughest running back ever. One man wrecking machine. Hardest running back to take down, hands down. Best power back ever! Saw him in his heyday, and people today would be blown away at the hits he delivered, balance he had, and the ability to carry 11 defenders on his back and gain 10 more yards. He was definitely top 5 running back of all time.
Dude, I watched and LOVED this guy's career. I grew up in the Bay Area a 49ers fan for life...but I asked for an Earl Campbell jersey for Christmas in 1979! This guy was ALL WORLD.

1:03 Earl looks like the incredible hulk or some kind of super hero running the ball! If he played today everybody even Ray Lewis would be scared to tackle or Earl and that's a fact!

The only power back who was ever in Earl's class was Jim Brown.

lildood24 1 year ago
@lildood24 He had to face Jack Lambert twice a year and Ray Lewis couldn't carry Lamberts jockstrap. He also did pretty good against Butkus but they didn't play that often. The hit from Jack Tatum where Tatum hit him at the one and he scores crossing the goal line backwards is incredible

@jaycowart Sorry he did not ever play Butkus just Lambert and Hamm twice a year. Butkus was gone in 74 Earls first year was 78. Sorry

they way i see it, it's not the Texans' fault that Bud Adams is a piece of shit. he's the fucktard that stole the team from our city and the Texans just came in to give us some semblance of an NFL team again. sure, we don't have the great traditions of the oilers anymore, but the nfl could have granted the 32nd franchise to anyone vying for it at the time.

TheJetfighter666 2 years ago 2
hEY jET FIGHTER666....Speaking for me ...
1z1q 2 years ago 2
dude i live in houston we def support the texans.
the oilers went to tennessee and lost their soul, so its a different organization.
The texans are also gettin pretty good...
billabongboy24 2 years ago
What really bugs me is when a team is stolen, there nick name should not be able to be taken also!!!! It should not be the Indianapolis Colts! Or the St. Louis Rams. Or the Arizona Cardinals. If I am the commish, I would allow the Ravens to switch their name back to the Colts, and St. Louis to switch their name back to the Cardinals. Let Arizona and Indianapolis make up their own new nick names!
ThailandKyle 2 years ago
Agreed , In most cases. To be honest I do like what Tenn and Houston did.I like the old school names There are two sides to the coin.. Say the Jets moved to L..A..[ God Forbid] I would rather root for the L.A. Jets than nothing[ I think?] Boy, That a hard thing to even think about.. maybe your right? Then I would have to root for the Giants? Oh God no!!] Well maybe it would be o.k. I might see a super bowl before i die. lol I just hope that a team does not have to move again.Good luck on Sunday
TheJetfighter666 2 years ago

All the great powers backs never spiked the ball? Earl Campbell, John Riggins. Why because they where Blue Collar boys...
Serpin43 2 years ago
Also Serpin scoring TD's wasn't a big deal to them because they did it so often.
FrsBigeasy 2 years ago
Earl Campbell, John Riggins, Gerald Riggs, Otis Anderson, William Andrews. Great North South runners of the late 70's early 80's. Even Walter Payton would lower the shoulder. I'll take a power back any day of the week.. Bradon Jacobs has the potential but Giants pass alot but he is probably the best we got right now for a power back.
Serpin43 2 years ago
if campbell had let himself get tackled once in a while, maybe he wouldnt have the body of a 120 year old today. o well thats football i guess

1977kb0wqh1996 2 years ago
As a former Oilers fan I love your statement. But the fact remains the asshole Bud Adams has retired that name. Even after he dies which I hope is soon, Houston can not use the name Oilers. Most Houston fans would love the name change. They can not do it. Go Vikes.
onede 2 years ago
Most might not remember but I believe the 80 yard run at 0:16 sec. was his 32nd carry of the night and plus he outran the safety to the end-zone. At the University of Texas his senior year, "Thunder and lightning", the "Thumper" and the "Tyler Rose" were some of his knicknames.

(Not To Mention The RocknRoll) Good Stuff!
cowboysfan782008 2 years ago
Gave all of my Baseball and Football cards from our era to my son.
sivvybee 2 years ago
It was just plain sad to see him like that after what he was like in football. But hey, that's what happens when you play football and the consequences you may suffer later on in life. I'm not bashing him but I'm only saying the facts that happen in football.
redmustang03 2 years ago
Earl had a condition with his knees/legs, before he even played football. I doubt he knew it would end up that bad. The guy was a full blown stud. I lived in Texas back when he played for the Longhorns, and watched him play when I was a kid. (Watched him run the "FK" over guys)! I have the utmost respect for him. He is a mild mannered guy that was a monster on the field. The only other back that I can remember that was somewhat like Earl, was John Riggins of the Redskins.
cowboysfan782008 2 years ago

Secondly, aside from Thomas Hollywood Henderson, Dallas was never the showboat type team, like we have had in recent yrs, Glad thats done!
cowboysfan782008 2 years ago
As great as he was back then today Earl Campbell is literally a gimp. All those years of the hits, tackles, and injuries from football took its toll later in his life. Today, he is confined to a wheelchair and has to sleep on a chair. He has severe arthritis in his knees and congenital back condition that was aggravated football. In 2007 he had 3 large bone spurs removed from his body and its only gotten worse. When I saw him in a Texas football game a few years back. continue.
redmustang03 2 years ago
A rare talent....and yes, he was about the largest football player I'd seen before. Enormous strength, talent...
