This song popped up on my iPod the morning after I woke up from a suicide attempt on New Year's Eve a year and 4 months ago . Listening to it still gives me chills and tears of joy.
"So close to dying, that I finally can start living."
Although I doubt you will ever see this comment, thank you for writing this song, Conor. It kept me from finishing the job.
""An Attempt to Tip the Scales" includes what is ostensibly an interview with the band's frontman, Conor Oberst. However, Oberst has admitted that the interview was something of a joke, intended to poke fun at the dark tone of the album. Conor's voice is impersonated in the interview by Todd Fink of The Faint and Commander Venus. The man interviewing is Matt Silcock, a former member of Lullaby for the Working Class." - Wikipedia
when I was a teenager i was in the mental hospital for the 2nd time and there was this beautiful girl who sang this song to me. At the time I only new 3 other bright eyes songs and so went I got home i downloaded a bunch of bright eyes songs and been hooked ever since.
You all do realize, that's not really him talking at the end.. lol.. Oh could you be a conor fan and not know what his voice sounds like when he talks? hahaha. It's way too funny for life though. <3
In this interview, the fake Oberst presents a strange, contradictory explanation of his attitude towards his music. It acknowledges criticisms of his lyrics as overblown and insincere, which had begun to appear as the popularity of the band increased, but responds by stating that the lyrics are meant for personal interpretation. Oberst later commented that "It was a way to make fun of ourselves because the record is such a downer. I mean, that's one part of who I am but I also like laughing."
