Charlie Patton died of a pre existing heart problem and bronchitis in the lap of his wife Bertha Lee Patton 3 weeks after a doing a tough gig for a white audience - the white audiences liked to dance the entire time so he didn't get a break. This event, coupled with the tough life style he was forced to lead, meant he couldn't recover. The knife story is good for the legend though.
patton got his throat slashed/cut in a knife fight lets speculate he lived hard and played hard so causes 1 WOMEN 2 DRINKING 3 GAMBLING 4 ALL OF THE ABOVE AND MORE
all blues lovers should thank god for letting charley patton an howlin wolf meet! and for muddy fallin under the spell of son house! because they took the torch these men lit n they carried it all the way!
Charley Patton is my main inspiration, but I just cant listen to his stuff from 1934.I think its sad listening. His just a shadow of what used to be.His recordings from 1929-1930 will always be in my heart.Long live Grand Father,Brother,Friend,Mentor and King Charley Patton.
@boxingin Yeah it was in 1932 he had his throat cut,but his immune system was all down in 1934, its sad listening. His lungs are infected. His struggling for breath.
@Devaprakash777 - 'How did he get his throat slashed'? By keeping bad company and hanging in bad places. And by heavy drinking and womanising (with the wrong woman).
The old 'juke joints' were known for being violent and dangerous places. Playing the blues was a hazardous occupation. Leadbelly was attacked with a knife (and was jailed for killing his attacker), Robert Johnson was fatally poisoned, and Papa Charley got his throat cut. And the same for many others, I'm sure.
I like the reverb.....its the cleanest I have ever heard Charley....and I think he would approve.
