i did somthing simmilar with an automaton dwarf in a christmas grotto i did about ten years ago the dwarf in question was fast asleep in a frantic workshop scene, and for all the sawing hammering and screwdrivering going on in said workshop this guy was the most convincing, and endearing.
Is this a fully closed puppet? and is that chest plate pushing against the latex (what im guessing it is), to achieve this effect, assuming its a fully closed puppet? (opening from the back i'm also assuming).
