The Confederacy didn't "free the slaves" during the Civil War, because frankly.. they had better and more important things to worry about. The slave labor helped the Confederate government just like it helped the rag tag continental army and 13 states a hundred years earlier. The Confederate States was probably.. just months away from giving slaves the same offer that the Union gave them, but instead of pay, they would have fought for their freedom.

But they didn't develop the kind of jobs that would attract workers that went to the North - and fought FOR the north. IRonically, if the South never had slaves, they would have easily won the civil war.
Perhaps if they would of got rid of it before Lincoln did they would have - as other countries would of joined there cause. But no one was going to join the south with Slavery apart of there constitution.

Southern greed doomed them. They had slaves do most of the work -- they made millions on slaves. But they didn't develop the kind of jobs that would attract workers that went to the North - and fought FOR the north. IRonically, if the South never had slaves, they would have easily won the civil war.

Perhaps if they would of got rid of it before Lincoln did they would have - as other countries would of joined there cause. But no one was going to join the south with Slavery apart of there constitution.
However, while Lee, Longstreet, Jackson all knew the horrors of slavery and understood that they must end it - it's probably not true they would of won without them, as thats the reason they kept them. They needed the manpower, the weapons, there food and so on to continue the war.

Bhobbs1985, the Confederacy had a plan to phase out slavery. They didn't have to have it. Also, the Constitution of the United Stated had slavery in it prior to the 13th Amendment.
The Civil War wasn't about slavery. It was about state's rights and taxation. Did you know that the South paid the vast majority of the Federal taxes before 1861?

The North did not win....they just used brut force to take over and occupy a soverign country that had seceeded from the United States. Because Lincolon wanted our cotton, oil, and other goods and we wouldn't give it to him, he just took it. 600,000 deaths could have been avoided if lincoln had just let the southern states leave. you'd think the north would have wanted that. they didn't want negroes in their states. lincoln as well as most whites didn't want equality for them. slavery would have been contained and eventually die out anyway. forcing states to stay in the union is tyranny. they were free to join on their own but not to leave on their own? what a stupid war and a waste of life!

He was a doctor, he took care of our soldiers. He's a veteran who served in our Air Force. He's our Congressman who speaks for us in Texas. We are proud of him. He believes in small government and entangling alliances with none. He believes in going to war and winning it but not getting into it for political reasons. He is speaking up for us and we are proud of him. He has a heart the size of Texas and that's all that matters, regardless if he was born here or not, he represents the south.

People try to make the argument about economics, well the South's wealth was based on the labor of slaves, slaves treated more inhumanly than anywhere on the face of the Earth, except perhaps for the Caribbean. Yes Northern wealth was based on the lower class's basic economic slavery, but that is not a cognate. They lower class had rights, and dignity. They had the vote. They were recognized as human beings.

The war was about economics, if the U.S. had loast the south it's own economy with had collapsed. Slavery was not even a issue, the north had slaves too and were not recognized as people either. Just remember the victor writes the history and lies. The U.S. was the one who went out west and enslaved and killed thousands of american indians so when you think your side is so great remember he they killed and tortured.

No group of people profited from slavery as did Yankees. They started it here; got rich from it; built an industrial empire with the blood-money; sold them off when they were no longer needed; and even found a way to gain from emancipation. Yet they expected the South to lose everything by just 'letting them go'. Why didn't 'noble' Yankees just use their slave money and buy their freedom? - Since they couldn't stand to see them in chains and all. THAT would be worth bragging about.

the root cause of the war was slavery, if you don't understand why it's because you have no understanding of the events antebellum civil war. his immediate cause for going to war was preserving the union, but the causes of the events that led to secession all stemmed from slavery.

What I do deny is your assertion that the Feds prevented the South from leaving because of slavery or that secession is illegal or that Lincoln gave a damn or that most Northerners or Southerners gave a damn about the slaves. Because of an act of hostility by the southern hordes. The north tried to reconcile by peace but the barbaric southerners would only be satisfied by bloodshed. Lincoln stated in his first inaugural address There would be no invasion of the South unless such were necessary for him as President to fulfill his obligation to hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the federal government.
