For others, it's a lot easier (like H-1B immigrants). We need to EQUALIZE the legal immigration system, not just tilt it toward skilled workers. Yes, skilled workers are great, but why should THEY get priority because they were lucky enough to be born in a fairly wealthy country or area and got all these opportunities others don't?
You think those illegal hispanics had those kinds of opportunities? Of course not! That's part of the reason WHY they come here, to take advantage of opportunities in the U.S. they don't have back home.
I mean, OF COURSE, Mexico SHOULD work simultaneously to build up its own econ. and bring a lot more folks out of poverty, but considering recent events and decades, that doesn't seem likely, and it'll take a LONG time even if they start a viable economic development plan.
And I think it's obvious to anyone's not an idiot and has looked at the evidence that we NEED TO REINSTATE THE BRACERO PROGRAM. From what I recall, certain nativist trade unions in this country (for whatever reason) bitched loud enough in the 1960s and got it banned. A guest worker program couldn't hurt, esp. for hispanics who DO wanna stay Mexican and not have to leave their entire home nation and culture behind for life just to get a better life.
The sad thing is how desperate and absurd-sounding a lot of these right-wing "arguments" against illegal immigration are, even though most of them are lies or half-truths anyway. The whole "too many poor hispanic workers coming in will lower wages for Americans" is such nonsense. I mean, for REALLY low-skilled workers, it MIGHT, although the evidence is inconclusive, and most studies suggest, at best, maybe 5-8% reductions in average wages for low-skilled natives. Ooh, 5-8%. big deal
But for the vast majority of Americans, it won't make much diff. on national wages. And that's just ONE OF MANY bogus arguments for taking really strict measures against illegal immigration.
You wanna know the EASY way to solve the problem? FIX THE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM by making it easier and less-costly for them to come here legally! Give illegal aliens who've been here a while, pay taxes, are working hard and obey the laws a path to citizenship. It's a no-brainer.
It takes, what, 4 years to become a citizen in this country? Why not cut that in half to 2? That still seems like plenty of time to learn all the basics. Besides, it seems a little IRONIC that we require such hurdles of IMMIGRANTS who wanna become citizens, like with the immigration test, when MOST AMERICANS COULDN'T EVEN PASS THAT SHIT IF THEIR LIVES DEPENDED ON IT! So either these immigrants are super-educated as Americans, or it must not be that vital to "being American."
Let's face it: on SO MANY MEASURES of efficiency and being good people, immigrants tend to be MUCH BETTER and more well-adjusted than the average native. I think part of that is because they're inherent risk-takers, esp. those who are refugees. They took that risk of coming from a hostile nation or poverty-stricken one to get here for a better life. Natives were BORN here with our immense national wealth. They tend to take all this shit for granted.
Immigrants who are not yet citizens can't make use of many welfare-state or social programs, at any level of government, not that they would want to all that much. But the fact that they CAN'T for that time period where they're transitioning, I think, REQUIRES a higher level of self-sufficiency and work ethic that I think all too few Americans have. Quite a few immigrants ALSO are entrepreneurs.
That's just a sample of the awesome qualities of immigrants, on average.
Immigrants have a lower crime rate than natives, too. That's probably because THEY DON'T WANT TO FUCK THINGS UP FOR THEMSELVES and possibly get deported or whatever. I suspect that a lot of them also don't want to give immigrants a bad name.
We could learn SO MUCH from immigrants about being better Americans, but instead, folks like the GOP base bitch and whine and moan about them, at least if they're "illegal." "Why did you give driver's licenses to illegals?" Yeah... as if to say, "I'd rather ancy immigrants or those with shit to do just go on the road with no training or assurances of safety and just cause an accident because the state refused to 'acknowledge' them or whatever."

All these guys reference science when it's convenient for them, ie - referencing the scientific community as the final authority on safe repositories for nuclear waste. Yet they completely ignore science when it's inconvenient, ie - Darwinism. Put faith in science or don't put faith in science. But science is science. Geology isn't any more true than biology.

If you want to test evolution or Darwinism, you had better enlist the help of your descendants for the next 50 generations to sit around and make measurements. Perry looks awful in these debates. It has nothing to do with him being a Christian or Texan, or whatever bs excuse he's using. It's because of things like calling Mitt Romney part of the immigration problem, or telling Anderson Cooper he can answer whatever question he wants in such a blatant manner. The other candidates may not directly answer the question, but at least they don't say it. I was thinking of voting Republican this year, but these candidates aren't impressing me much.

Regular immigrants who come here for a better life. The only diff. is that the LEGAL immigration system for them in particular was far too costly and difficult. For others, it's a lot easier (like H-1B immigrants). We need to EQUALIZE the legal immigration system, not just tilt it toward skilled workers. Yes, skilled workers are great, but why should THEY get priority because they were lucky enough to be born in a fairly wealthy country or area and got all these opportunities others don't?

I mean, OF COURSE, Mexico SHOULD work simultaneously to build up its own econ. and bring a lot more folks out of poverty, but considering recent events and decades, that doesn't seem likely, and it'll take a LONG time even if they start a viable economic development plan.

The sad thing is how desperate and absurd-sounding a lot of these right-wing "arguments" against illegal immigration are, even though most of them are lies or half-truths anyway. The whole "too many poor hispanic workers coming in will lower wages for Americans" is such nonsense. I mean, for REALLY low-skilled workers, it MIGHT, although the evidence is inconclusive, and most studies suggest, at best, maybe 5-8% reductions in average wages for low-skilled natives. You wanna know the EASY way to solve the problem? FIX THE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM by making it easier and less-costly for them to come here legally! Give illegal aliens who've been here a while, pay taxes, are working hard and obey the laws a path to citizenship. It's a no-brainer.

Let's face it: on SO MANY MEASURES of efficiency and being good people, immigrants tend to be MUCH BETTER and more well-adjusted than the average native. I think part of that is because they're inherent risk-takers, esp. those who are refugees. They took that risk of coming from a hostile nation or poverty-stricken one to get here for a better life. Natives were BORN here with our immense national wealth. They tend to take all this shit for granted.

Immigrants who are not yet citizens can't make use of many welfare-state or social programs, at any level of government, not that they would want to all that much. But the fact that they CAN'T for that time period where they're transitioning, I think, REQUIRES a higher level of self-sufficiency and work ethic that I think all too few Americans have. Quite a few immigrants ALSO are entrepreneurs.
That's just a sample of the awesome qualities of immigrants, on average.
