Gee, I wonder it those cops invest personal money in the car-culture and then use there public jobs to protect that personal interests? I would love for all those cops to prove me wrong... : ) - it is also OK if only a few do it... Humm.. what does that have to do with it?
Funny how the cops only were ticketing cyclists. I watch 99% of motorist run stop signs and 25% run red lights. I have motorists pass through stop signs while I come to a stop, only they are in the on-comming lane as they run it.... Oh I also have police cars do the same thing.. and no, they were not responding... If those police were correct, they would be ticketing motorist for breaking the law, too.. Didn't see that in the video!
lieutenant says the cyclists were negligent in respecting other vehicles but none of the people cited were cited for motor vehicle violations. THAT MAKES NO SENSE! if the police had valid reason to do what they did, they would have had more than the B.S. charge of "disorderly conduct" to use. the police can use that generic oppression on practically anyone at any time. maybe cops are the first people who need to be educated on cyclists' rights....
No one violated any traffic laws. The cops couldn't cite them on a traffic violation because they didn't break any so they cited them for disorderly. He was pissed off, and deliberately provoked a crowd of cyclists waiting at a red light to turn. 3:05. Bicycles according to the City of Pittsburgh are considered vehicles and have every right to share the road.
If you want to disobey traffic laws riding a bike like an moron, be ready to accept the consequences. Is it going to worth to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair for making a point about nothing?
One more thing. If roads were designed with cyclists in mind - with lanes, signage, some cities even have special traffic lights - then more of an obligation is put on the cyclist to follow the rules. As of now most streets are pretty much the wild west for cyclists - all signage and markings are catered to the car. Roads can be used by multiple transportation modes if designed for them. I do agree that many cyclists are complete jackasses, but then so are many drivers.
Most drivers don't know the rules of the road when it comes to bicyclists, and get annoyed by their presence. Bicyclists do often disobey traffic laws, but two things (1) If there's a confrontation between and bike and car, who's gonna win? Drivers have a responsibility there, like it or not. (2) Bicyclists often have to be aggressive for their own safety because most of America's streets are designed with only cars in mind. Unfortunately, it's just the reality.
So why exactly is the biker the only one with the responsibility? Cities had streets before the car dominated the road. We're talking about very recent urban history (essentially post WWII) where the car took over the space of the road. Take a look at some old photos or read a little and educate yourself.
Bicyclists on the street are very annoying... Most bicyclists don't obey regular traffic laws. And recently I've heard something about "bike lanes" being created on the side of roads but not on sidewalks. I'm not sure if that is true or not.
And I hate people who rant about the Pittsburgh police force. Do you know how easy it is to edit around videos to make the police look horrible?? I do...
Uh, not to burst your bubble, but Beechwood Blvd in Squirrel Hill, Liberty Blvd in Bloomfield, and the Hot Metal Bridge hardly constitutes "bike lanes all over the city".
I think CM is great, rode it in a couple times - just for fun and exercise. Didn't see it as a 'political act' or anything. Just great people and an exhilarating experience riding downtown with a couple hundred other cyclists.
It is not the message that a CM is trying to demonstrate is bad, it is the participants. Many of the participants are these stereotypical neo-hippies. These people aren't cyclists. The real cyclists don't push their beliefs on others. A real cyclist is that guy/lady you see at 7:00 AM with his/her Lycra shorts on riding at a fast pace.
You should atleast have to move to the side for a car. If the speed limit is 35 and some biker is doing 15, I sure as hell don't want to get stuck behind them. If there is a car behind you, Fucking Move.
@KrosziZ Why is that, do you think you paid for the roads? Humm, where do all those tax dollars I pay go to? Oh yeah, infrastructure, including ROADS..... If you don't like it, stay on the interstate highways. Also, did you know car exhaust kills brain cells, making motorists mentally damaged?
Oh god, it's been so long since I've seen those stupid white and green cars. I moved away from Pburgh a few years ago and have been participating in all of the SF Bay area Critical Masses [five a month]. While it's shitty that people were cited, at least the police were not violent and the media seemed to share a fair story! You guys win on that one.
It's a real shame that these people won't conform to societies standards. It's not an easy thing to believe that these 'individuals' would express freedom as an act of rebellion by not fitting into societies standards. I hear ya pflueeb!
If you would simply educate yourself you would know that according to "society's standards", traffic signals originated to protect the weaker from the stronger. Signals should be stopping the cars for the bikes, the same way they stopped the wagons in front of the House of Lords. I can't wait for $10/gal. gasoline. WooHoo!
If you wanna be a slave to working a job you hate to buy shit you don't need the rest of your life, you certainly have that right. My bike makes me feel freer than a car ever could.
Obviously, they are at least working enough to afford their bicycles. How many hours do most people work to afford their cars? How much time are you LOSING? How much gas money are you LOSING? The 1980's are over too, Mr. Wallstreet.
critical mass is a street party on bicycles. It's not a protest or a demonstration, it is a party. It's not dangerous and it doesn't ruin anyones lives so all you naysayers can save your rage for people who truly deserve it. and oh yes "honk if you support critical mass" :P
i guess they should keep doing it until their elected officials hire a genius who can solve the problem. this has no solution. it will go on forever in this form. which is stupid. write your congressman and have them hire a traffic genius.
how? look, getting in the way of traffic just to fuck with people drivin places and annoy the cops is going to get them busting yer balls. i am not sure some people quite yet understand that the cops are paid ASSHOLES. so when somebody pisses one off by doing stupid crybaby shit such as demanding room on the road for a five pound bike from people in machines weighing tons..dont be suprised when they (the cops) act out thier role,
if assuming i dont know bike messengers, you would be wrong. i know who does critical mass and i know there are various reasons. i just dont care about it. to me its like if you are on a five pound bike YOU are the one who needs to watch where yer going.
Gee, I wonder it those cops invest personal money in the car-culture and then use there public jobs to protect that personal interests? I would love for all those cops to prove me wrong... : ) - it is also OK if only a few do it... Humm.. what does that have to do with it?

How? The police officer stopped them for a supposed traffic violation, but they are being charged for public disturbance and failure to comply.
What happened to the traffic violation?
The cop said that they always do this, but they had a larger group that day.
