  • also what edit software are you using?

  • if i don't edit my photos should i shoot in raw or jpeg?

  • I want to shoot RAW but I don't have a DSLR but I have a SLR and I shoot film.

  • jesus christ!

  • WTF your hair Oo

  • I use Raw because of your videos, you did a great job!

  • Do you have advice/video about adobeRGB vs RGB in the nikon camera settings?

  • After watching this video, i went out and took both jpeg and raw photo's, being new to photography, i dont really understand all too much, but you learn as you go. it didn't take me long with my own editing and what you showed in your video to quickly switch to RAW. Thanks for the help x

  • thank you for saving me.

i wasnt pleased with the images i got with my 60D.. cause I was shooting jpg

now i get stunning images <3 thank you!!

  • weird Al Jankovich

  • @JaredPolin oh yeah and i tried tweaking the other setting like contrast and stiff... BRO I HAVE BEEN CONVERTED.. I SHOOT RAW.... the photos somehow feel more alive...

one more thing.. i dun use lightroom i use adobe bridge.. would that be enough or should i consider lightroom...

  • @JaredPolin I have been shooting in Jpeg, recently while covering an event i decided to shoot both RAW+Jpeg... and when i tried converting the raw to jpeg i found my images were noisy... So searched the web and found this video... THank bro you saved me... You mention on how whne importing RAW to lightroom only the whitebalance data is kept.. i didnt realise that the other settings were reset(or something like that).. so i tweaked the sharpness settings and noise levels and everything is okay...

  • I just bought my T3i and got in photography. This just saved me from years of possible future failure in photography.

  • thanks, I'm learning a lot with your videos, which computer do you use? I have to buy a new one soon... mine is dying (5 years old) another question do you shoot all your pictures in raw?

Gracias, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

  • You're here too Missy. You whore

  • Oh my god! You're hair! It's hideous!!!

  • @YIMMA996TT Still watching geek videos and learning are you YIMMA lol

  • how do you get the information about the camera and lens in the upper left corner of the images to apear? i dont have that, and im using LR 3.4.1

  • Ok, Jared. got your point but the question is: shooting in raw, having all those steps to edit the picture and then convertiing it to jpeg to be printed. wouldn´t that copy look exactly like the one originaly taken in jpeg? what is the point in avoid jepg files if in the end you have to convert them? Have you ever compared jpeg files converted from raw to original jpeg files?

  • OMG! After i watched your video am hating myself for shooting JPEGs... every photo i have could be so easy optimized? i had every time problems with banding..

    Thank you alot, Jared!

Thats definitly the reason why i HAVE TO start with shooting RAW

Like you said: "I Shoot RAW"... now i am, too.

  • Thank you for not having a cut in between or during every sentence. Also good video it's very informative.

  • I always shoot Raw

  • Very nice thanks for the side by side which everyone can follow. also thanks for pointing out that Banding on the sides, didnt know what to call it before and now know that its the pictures and not my comp screen, another great video from jared!!

  • from now on, I am shooting RAW :D

  • This "test" is not fair! of course the jpeg is gonna look like that if you messed up the sharpness/saturation, etc. in the camera, it is an irreversible process. And in the dark picture the jpeg actually looks better! more natural, if you need more contrast/saturation you can always add it later, the raw looks over-saturated. The banding is the only issue where raw wins, but no fair cause the in-camera jpeg settings worsens the matter. You should always use the "flat" setting.

  • does MP affect raw photo size ?

  • i really do want to shoot raw, but im not good at tweaking images ...

  • ok it's been a month since i found out about your channel. i'm REALLY interested in photography because of you...it seems like an AWSOME hobby. i'm guessing i have to buy a DSLR?? well i don't know anything about cameras. i want amazing video quality also cause i'm starting a youtube channel...i was thinking about the Rebel T3i. it comes right on my budget...should i invest in that? and what program do you use on this video? photoshop what?

  • So does the editing program that comes with Nikon DSLR's do the stuff you were showing in this video? I really need to know, but thanks in advance. :3

  • It all depends on the level of compression you use with jpeg..!

  • @DaMatta11 Finally someone gets it!

  • The last picture of that cat convinced me that Raw is the way to go

  • Why do you have a poster that says, "I shoot JPEG"?

  • thanks so much!

  • After the RAW file is edited and corrected it is processed into a JPEG?

  • That's how we like it! Off to pt 2.

  • Since conception of carrying a digital camera, I have been working with jpeg. THIS has changed my vision and will start shooting in RAW. Whether you want to admit it or not, you are a great professor. :) Thanks again!

  • lol why is this in my subbox this is about a year old :D

  • What happened to part 2?

  • lol Mr. Meowgi

  • Thanks dude. I just bought a Nikon D90 and was wondering on which format to use. Saw like 3-4 videos in youtube. People explaining the differences... I know what's a raw file and a jpeg file... I want to see the differences you get later, when you really take out the files of your camera and check results. The video is perfect. Thanks for that.

  • By the way, Mr. Meeow--gi is the greatest cat name......ever.

  • Appreciate the time you spent putting this together.....sometimes it's difficult to see the difference between good and great without the direct comparison.

  • Jared! I've probably gotten something wrong, I've read a few pages about converting the .RAW files, to .DNG files in LightRoom, and keep the RAWs as backups.

I've been doing this, and noticed minimal differencies, what is your opinion on this flow ?

  • hi..i was just wondering...can anyone tell me if the QUALITY is better raw than jpeg? because i dont really edit my pictures...so i just wanted to know if there is a difference in quality? thanks!

  • @cjcarljordan yes, theres a diference about definition quality

  • I love your videos. This video has voncinced me to start shooting RAW. I may even get the shirt! haha

  • I wish you had a mustache

  • This is amazing.. Thank you!

  • hahahahaha mr meow-gi. haha i'm i the only one that got that lol.

  • nurd?

  • jared, question here...

is lightroom slows down an iMac like the Apperture 3 does?

  • Great video, sending this to all my friends who continue to shoot JPEGS even after I beat them ove rthe head why they shouldn't. Once they embrace RAW I might even send them one of your "I Shoot RAW" t-shirts as a reward :)

  • I SHOOT RAW..... from now on.. thanks Jared for the very informative and enlightening videos.. lol

  • Why have i been shooting JPEG all these years?

  • Sweet Jheri curl

  • I can see you changed the saturation and contrast in one of the raw file. So what you about RAW files is more "alive" isn't always true.

  • i am convince

  • i've started shooting in RAW but I Don't know how to open them in photoshop and can't find any useful methods, all gets way too complicated for me, any help ? otherwise I just have to convert them to TIFF to edit them

  • Awesome. Once the Nikon D7000 RAW update for Aperture 3 gets here I'm switching right away.

  • Sharing this to all my friends on my facebook page and my friendspage. Theres loads of people still shooting in jpgs and that are trying to tell me that its better.

    Now who's laughing? :)

    Thanks Jared

  • so you edit in RAW? i have been told i have to convert all of my RAW files to TIFF before editing. is this incorrect?? or maybe it depends on the software? please clarify this for me! thanks for sharing your knowlege!!

  • @larkolena I wouldn't do that. U shoot raw to edit in raw.

  • @JaredPolin gimp won't edit my raw files. i have been having to convert to tiff. my camera will shoot in tiff...what is the purpose or use for tiff? what are your comments comparing raw and tiff? thanks!

  • @JaredPolin gimp won't edit my raw files. i have been having to convert to tiff. my camera will shoot in tiff...what is the purpose or use for tiff? what are your comments comparing raw and tiff? thanks!

  • @JaredPolin gimp won't edit my raw files. i have been having to convert to tiff. my camera will shoot in tiff...what is the purpose or use for tiff? what are your comments comparing raw and tiff? thanks!

  • @larkolena Think of TIFF as an container big enough to get you nicely done RAW in. For editing you use the Car (RAW). You shoudn´t edit the container ;) Catch my drift?

  • Is RAW still good if i dont have those programs? I only use that free photoshop online

  • Alright, I totally agree with you that RAW is technically better. but as a photojournalist on the field, you don't have time to post-process your images. To shoot RAW, it means sacrificing a few things.

  • Why cant i see my raw files ?? I dont have any kinda Editing program but i just cant se them on my computer... There stands its a pef-file??

  • Thanks man I just had a picture come out with banding like that now I know why. Looks like I should take a second look at raw. The info is very helpfull! Still don't think I can stop calling them "Sprinkles":)

  • Thx man, like this raw vs jpeg vid and it has brought my to the truth about RAW and I am shooting in Raw now.. Thx for iceland :)

  • @maggibry glad it helped you.

  • neeekon

  • Thanks. FINALLY some clear examples of the depth you get by usuing RAW and where it is better.....I have watch countless videos that are useless....!

  • @Schelosky Glad it helped now only to get more people to see it.

  • WHY THE VIDEO HAVE A "ORIGINAL" OPTION RESOLUTION ??!?!?!?!?

  • @LAugeniEdition He probably has one of those 27" or 30" screens. Notice the resolution? 2560x1440

  • Really great video man, looks awesome and it's also a good way to learn a thing or two about jpeg and raw.

This may sound totally noobish, but did you rescale your images to fit that aspect ratio or was it taken that way? Looks like the same aspect ratio of HD footage.

Whenever I take a picture with my D5000, the pictures end up with the width way too low and the height way too high to use in videos and optimal viewing conditions. Any suggestions?

  • @Xaeron187 I make sure to load a title card that is 16x9 than put the image in that is the proper photo aspect ratio.

  • @JaredPolin You mean set aspect ratio on the camera? I've no idea on how to do so, been looking around like crazy for a how to.

  • @Xaeron187 no, your camera will shoot the normal ration you do not want to shoot it at 16x9 even if it offered it for stills.

  • This is awesome video. You made everything easier!

    Keep it up!

  • Mr Meowgi - i liiike

  • thank you!

  • Mr. Miaugi? Is that some reference to sensei Chōjun Miyagi?

  • This was a great comparison, you really proved your point with the advantages of shooting RAW! Im glad you made this, so many people are going to realize shooting JPEG is a waste

    RAW FOR LIFE

  • Can't wait for part 2!
