Okay, after watching this about ten times in a row, my favorite part must come @ 2:58 when Sally (who is finally hip to what's really going on here) can't control her mirth anymore and she goes "Norman, I love you." Then reaches over to give him a kiss. So funny, so cute, so sweet. A big triple yay!
I didn't know who she was until "All in the Family" (American version of Til Death Us Do Part) was mentioned, I thought she was some 70s equivalent of Pamela Anderson, a Playboy girl or porn actress.
My Australian friend's recently showed me these things on DVD (I'm American). Really delightful stuff, and this Struthers bit was my favorite. It's interesting to see how sweet and tender she is.
I could watch this over and over again. It's one of the funniest things I have ever seen - especially the part where he tells her she looks so young, "more like the daughter" from All in the Family. Absolute comedy gold!
Remember this like it was yesterday. Sally won a lot of hearts for being so cool about the interview. Frank Zappa was a hoot too. Keith Moon just abused him and emptied a bottle of vodka over his head which kinda showed his basic character.
Not quite sure why you're laughing your arse off. John Logie Baird was a Scottish engineer and inventor of the world's first practical, publicly demonstrated television system, and also the world's first fully electronic colour television tube. That's the 'non-comedy' educational bit.
Garry MacDonald aka Norman Gunston,is still around. He was a NIDA-trained actor(NIDA being the Australian equivilent of RADA-Mel Gibson and every prominent Australian actor trained there) who created Norman 30 years before Borat. He would do a bit on his variety show where he interviewed American actors who never quite got the joke.He also had a Top Ten record with a funny medley of Abba songs. If you want to see what Gary looks like as normal,he was also in the classic Aus sitcom Mother and Son.
Initially thinking Norman to be the oddball, Sally absolutely loved it as the interview wore on, realising that in turning the tables it was actually him using her as a foil for his genius.
Norman (Garry McDonald) was amazing. He'd stay in character for so long, people just didn't get it for a long while. They thought Gunston was a real dude.
My favourite Gunston piece was when he went to the beach behind San Clemente,Nixon's beach house in California and proclaimed...."This is the beach were the former President of the United States....hangs ten!"
@TJWhitewolf It's a joke interview. Norman Gunston was a made up character played by Gary Norman, who is really one of the most talented comic actors Australia's ever produced. He has never really got the recognition he deserved. Plus it was 30 years before Borat.
@gazeff Yeah, McDonald... I don't know where I got Gary Norman from! Must have thought Gary-Norman-Gunston. I suppose I lost too much blood shaving this morning.
This is the 2nd best interview after NG and Frank Zappa. I love it when the person getting interviewed doesnt quite get it but they go along for the ride anyway.
Norman Gunston was a character created by Gary McDonald, a great Auastralian actor and talent. He used to confuse people(especially stupid american actors) that he was a serious journalist
So many times I've seen this on TV and the clowns don't actually show the funniest part. The last bit where she tells him he should use an electric razor and he says "I do" That was the end of her - she just lost it completely. It's one of the moments I always think of when I think of Gunston. The Ali interview was great too, where Ali had him by the shirt. He asked Ali if he could pick him up a duty free transistor radio in Manilla.
Yes, I don't think I had seen the Ali one since way back when. They did play it on a TV special a few months ago but I didn't manage to tape it. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find it.
After 34 years, it still makes me cry! My own experience of the Gunston Show in 1975 was when I came out of hospital with my jaw wired after a sports accident. Gunston was on ABC TV on a Sunday night and after a few minutes I was laughing so hard I nearly ripped the wires out of my mouth. There are so many classics missing here, like when Norman told Linda McCartney that she didn't look Japanese! Can anyone out there remember Norman's tour in 1980? I saw him 3 times in one week. Genius!!!!
What a treasure! So much to love. Sally's kindness, disbelief and laughter. One of our greatest actors in full flight! A masterpiece of timing and great fun. Well done Gary! (We're like that!)
That has to be one of TV comedy's greatest ever interviews. Gary MacDonald is a comic genius and Sally Struthers has one of the most infectious laughs you will ever hear.
