A most difficult piece for sure, and Ms. Mullova is a talented musician. I believe I noticed—at least twice—that there was a “noise” rather than a “tone.” Perhaps the bow wasn’t rosined enough, or maybe too much, but it sounded like there wasn’t enough pressure in those spots. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable performance. The fast passages were amazingly clean.
i am not typically one to leave negative youtube comments... but here it goes. surely, the violinist is a lovely person but i have issues with this chaconne interpretation.
bowing is too détaché and without pressure. quadruple and triple stop chords seem hesitant and unprepared in the fingerings. phrasing is depthless. vibrato is suppressed and hurried.
the overall performance feels clinic, sterile and passionless to me. didn't buy it... and these are my favorite passages of the movement.
@matanuskamist I would say I found her interpretation sober, dry and austere. But I agree her phrasing lacks momentum. That her vibrato is suppressed is not a bad thing. Hilary Hahn's vibrato, by contrast, just pulses mindlessly through the piece, whether it makes sense or not. Mullova's approach to this doesn't bother me at all.
Overall, I concede your points, but, for my part, I do "buy it." It's an unsentimental, not overdramatized reading, and, taken on its own terms, still pretty moving.
I've heard of Viktoria playing, often, for people with alzhemirs and curing them through music. I'm amazed none of the afflicted walked out the doors and forgot to stay and listen.
That in itself is proof of the curing powers she has.
Viktoria Mullova is one of the supreme Bach interpreters on the planet: Marvelous !!!! She is her own 'continuo' in some parts and that fiery run that she makes at 5:43 is glorious and seemingly effortless. Bach was a genius.
I agree. Her knowledge and personal interpretation is self evident here. It's so appropriate for the time period. I can hear the voices with distinct clarity as well as the work's charismatic diversity throughout.
she is coming to México this november 17th :D

I turned off some Dubstep for this. I think I made the right decision.

I love the facial expression of some elderly people in the audience : half blissful, half dreamy : they reached felicity.

Amazing interpretation! I'm am also interested about the ending. Very short and simple, kind of leaves you wanting a little more.
