Your punches are way too high. Even the weakest person can take punches to their chest all day. That's why Isshin Ryu punches are directed more to the lower/floating ribs and just below the sternum where they really hurt. Your middle blocks are way too far out. The top of the fist should be level with your shoulder, and your elbow should be close enough to your abdomen such that only your fist could fit between the gap. That block is meant to be for close combat in line with Isshin Ryu's intent.
You must have slightly changed the style from its original form put together by tatsuo Shimabuku. Your stance needs to be lower, hands farther back so your elbows point in like you are grabbing two handles at your waist, your feet are to close together and your strides are too long. Thats just for how you position yourself, the style is meant to be fought in the area of a phone booth. Not enough room to finish message.

this guy has a horrible punch. bro, don't angle your wrist like that. try punching someone hard like that. i'm a san dan in isshinryu so i'm speaking from experience.
when i think of tae kwon do, i think of high kick high kick high kicj. isshinryu has more practicallity if your looking for self defense as compared to a sport
@Articulas2000 I know you posted this question a long time ago. I studied TKD for two years when I was younger. I've also studied Boxing, Muay Thai, and Isshinryu as far as stand up arts go. In my opinion, Isshinryu is much more practical and effective than TKD simply because of the short and fast blocking and striking, and low kicks There are alot of high kicks in TKD, and that is risky in a real fight or NHB/MMA match. But I've had my bell rung by TKD head kicks too :)
okay for the upper-body basics i would say take your time film it in a quieter spot. backyard, garage, or in the dojo/studio when it is not crowded. Try not to run too fast threw the basics with new students. Because you will become sloppy. We all start somewhere. But this video's good intentions could lead to newbies/lower ranks hurting themselves due to unclear instructions. However good idea for the video.
Some tips for blue belt. Make sure thumb is on top elbows back. You punch to high on your uppercuts (chin area). Straight punch too high and wrist is slightly bent keep it straight (solar Plexus). Stop looking down at the floor , look at opp. chest area. Dont worry we all started this way.

the isshinryu uppercut is gage throat strike or between the eyes.. someone needs more lessons before attempting to teach.

your upper cuts are wrong for the style.. you shouldn't teach someone the wrong way..

I have taken an Isshinryu class, and am comparing it to Tae Kwon Do. I am not sure which way to go. Why is Isshinryu better than TaeKwonDo?
