  • looks like the queen has 2 acounts

  • wats the line before ... " o donnell called him on the boat ",,,,,

  • @papaclank When Carey told on Skin-the-goat,

O'Donnell caught him on the boat...this refers to James Fitzharris who was a member of the Irish republican brotherhood... and he was known as "skin the goat" ...you can probably Wikipedia it if you want to know more about the whole thing

  • Fan-tastic!

  • thats not live as i exspected, its a picture, kelly o neill has a live version vid. rename ur lying vid.

  • hahahaha:)

  • I was lucky enough to hear Patsy Watchorn sing this with the Dubs in December 2010 @ Vicar St. His version comes very close to Luke's, although NOTHING will ever beat Luke's version of this song, and it was much better then Ronnies. I wish I could find a recording of it.

  • who is the single idiot that didnd´t like the song??

  • THEY TOOK THE PISS OUT OF THE CLANCY'S AND TOMMY MAKEM

  • @MONTAGNEVILLE How da mean???

  • I'm from Sedalia, MO, where the cattle trails used to end. It also had a famous red light district until after WWII!

  • What downy disliked this?

  • damn luke voice when he first start singing..

  • He whistled at her growler, lololololol

  • Fckn love this tune!!!!!!

  • Legend !!!!

  • take her up to monto monto monto

  • Man, Luke always sang his god damn heart out in every performance.

  • Aah. . . they were so young here. <3

  • @harfarhs I am a Dub born and bred, and langer isn't a word you'd find used so often up this way, which is weird cuz we use the word moth (or m'oh) up here (more so on the north side of Dublin) I'd be interested to know who wrote the song to start with and where he was from!! does anyone know??

  • @TheTweetie i'm from cork and was wondering about the langeru thing myself because i always thought it was a cork thing,,live and learn i suppose

  • @TheTweetie Song was written by George Hodnett. George was from Dublin. If you wanna know more about this song, do a search for 'monto' on the mudcat.org forums, fascinating stuff.

  • ahhhhhhhh briliant :D

  • up my arse...

  • lovely version, a rousing last verse.

  • I love Luke's voice in every song or poëm, he's always great, just like all the Dunliners, just love them

  • i love luke kellys irreverant voice here!! its so cutting and filled with humour!!!

    RIP

  • Being from Cork, u are a "langer', is that a good meaning? What do you call a person from Cork? A Langer, langered, langerer, all people from Cork are langers......now fcuk off!

  • @polmaccaba langer??????????? prick is just as good if not better for them turkey sounding cunts!!

  • I just thought I'd add, langer is a word used more often in cork and can have 3 different meanings depending on the context in which it is spoken, it can mean to be drunk if you say "jaysus I was langered last night" or it can mean a mans dick if you say "we went back to my gaff and she got me langer out" or it can mean i foolish person or dickhead if you say "that feckin' theiry henry is a right langer".......I'd be interested to know though in what context it is meant in this song.

  • @TheTweetie .....thats the way it is in tipp too...it has a good few meanings...

  • @TheTweetie - the usages you describe have some equivalence to "f***ed"/"f***er"/"tool" in English.. given that the song is about a red-light district I would imagine "langer-oo to you" means "good f***in' tonight!!"

  • @harfarhs langer is what cork people their member, has the exact same meaning as pr1ck or d1ck and is used the exact same way.

  • have dubs ain't as good as a full dub mate

  • thog mo thoin lol im a dub well half anywayz lol

  • Póg mo thóin means?

  • "Kiss my arse"!

  • It means "kiss my ass"

  • Anyone know where to get chords for Dubliners?

  • The 'Monto" is NOT Cathal Brugha Street today. It's Foley Street, which is the street to your right as you're travelling along Amiens street towards the Liffey (before the turn to your right for Talbot Street). It runs towards Corporation Street.

  • thank you for setting that straight,i was told years ago that it was cathal brugha,i searched a load of dublin sites to confirm your claim and i finally found a passage from ULYSSES about bloom and dedalus walking down beaver lane ,taking a left onto montgomery and a right onto amiens past the north star hotel.glad you told me and thank you again.

  • evidenced by your potty mouth.

  • According to your profile you are American living in America?

So why do you hate Dublin so much?

Did it fail you live up to your childish churlish guache Irish American republican dross?

Catholicism is a foreign religion in Ireland and there was an Ireland before it and there will be one after it.

Dublin is a varied city full of light and dark the Irish character the same but it is endlessly tenacious.

You obviously have never been there or you could not mistake its topography so.

    Grow up

  • It is amazing how you can profess the supposed accomplishments of the zealousy religious and yet swear so blindly, vulgar language should at least be interesting.

You should could to Dublin at least we could teach you how to swear!

On second thoughts dont come we dont want you.

  • RIP

  • Thanks

  • Muteswan1. he wasnt referring to pog mo thon as pog mo thon means kiss me arse in irish!!!!! ha ha

  • RIP Ronnie Drew

  • How better to swear at the Albert Hall and get away with it :-) Top band, saw them twice, unfortunately after Ciaron & Luke had passed on. Took my ex girlfriend, an avid metal fan, and by jove you should have seen her doing the actions during Barney's rendition of South Australia ! A band for all people, keep it going lads !

  • Great, thanks for posting.

There is one thing that still puzzles me about this song. At the end of Monto, Luke dedicates the last verse to "some friends of ours" mentioned in the previous verse.

My cd of this was recorded in 1968. He couldn't have meant Pogue Mahone, could he, as obviously they were hardly born?

    Whom was Luke referring to?

  • He is referencing Ronnys "Legions of something or other" Refering to the legion of mary (the catholic church) They can kiss his arse basically !!

    So there yaar

  • Yes, I see that. Ronnie used to sometimes refer to the "legions of Mary's," didn't he?

Still don't sound much like nuns singing.

    Thanks

  • it's the clancy brothers they are referring to, as you can hear by the way they sing the last verse...

  • A ha,

I think you may be right

    Thanks

  • i think you're right

  • @dubliner85 irony is, once you go abroad, everyone always goes to the Irish pub first, and the local group sing the Clancy version! The lads on the street that are there for the Ireland game in a few days sing the original. Always started by one, finished by 600 :) Remembered by about 30, and another 12 that filmed the crazy beautiful clowns! :)

  • It's actually 'pog mo thoin' translated as 'kiss my arse'. The Pogues record label was, in effect, 'kiss my arse' records. And when they repeated the last 2 verses, they included a bit more swearing, in Gaelic, please correct me on the spelling if I made a mistake, instead of a gap between 'langeroo.....to you', they included the word 'lathoidhi' the last line, translated, langeroo, balls to you :-)

  • balls ---- liathroidi

ur write on pog mo thoin tho but langeroo isnt balls its just nuthin...jus taut id say so cause ya said correct me

  • Thanks for that mate, I posted the 'lathoidhi' bit as a result of a tape I had, and it gave the translation as 'balls'......unless I dreamt it :-) Anyway, it's a fine song sung by a fine group, on that I'm sure you're not going to correct me !

  • I dont know but i always thought langeroo was langer out ?? As in your langer out?

    I dont know??

Also langer i think may mean to have sex or a mans genitals? Your right about liathroidi but in Dublin slang langer in Irish English slang is penis..... aaah Dublinese

  • ye actually your probably right there lalealynn good shout fair play

  • langeroo means drunk

  • @Muteswan1 Well when he's saying "Pogue Mahone" as you put it, he is talking about the queen and he says "Póg mó thoin" which in Irish means Kiss my arse.

  • @Muteswan1 he is telling the queen to "pog ma thoin" (kiss my ass) in that verse

  • @Muteswan1 Pog ma Thon means Kiss my Ass in Irish.

  • best irish band of all time.never have heard anybody to come close voice wise singing one of lukes covers to match luke singing.unique.listen to him sing rocky road to dublin without so much as a breath unreal

  • this is so grand.i never heard this version before.thank you

  • Thanks russ, the Dubliners at their best. 5*****

  • That last verse is great!

  • Haha, I'm guessing they're doing the last verse as the Clancys? Regardless a great version, thanks Dub.

  • i think your right, this would have been the time they split up i reckon?

  • Yep, this album was recorded in 1969, the year the Clancys split up.

  • the dubliners never split up the have just had changes in member ship ciaran bourke and luke kelly died and ronnie drew left the band for about 4 years
