I liked it, but it does not have the same meaning as the original. You cut out the begging where the Phantom was more forgiving trying to get Christine away.
Michael Crawford's voice and singing style would be wonderful as Raoul. Gerard Butler isn't naturally talented, yet still went through grueling voice training. I feel it payed off. He gave off the haunted, intimidating and insecure sound. Crawford has a more adorable, sweet sound. His sadness can be heard, but I don't know. I just adore the Phantom's character in general.
I'm gonna be killed for saying this, but I completely love Gerard Butler. His voice being rough around the edges makes the contrast between Raoul and the sexiness of the phantom so much better. I think his tone is so much more heavenly than Crawfords... If Andrew Lloyd Webber approves....

@CoralBR98 The trouble with Steve Barton is that Raoul doesn't have a lot of singing to do, and the acting - what videos I could find of the original performance are of terrible quality. Yea, a lot of people I know (my girlfriend for one) watched the movie and never seen the play. She loves the movie and has a crazed obsession over Gerard Butler (saying he is the perfect man; built, can sing, act, and studied to be a lawyer (how she knows that is beyond me =X)
lol. So I guess they did their job if it captivated my GF (who swore it would be stupid).
in the movie version, however much i LOVE it, Erik's deformity looks like he's just bald on one side with a bad sunburn. The play went extreme, like one half of his head looks bitten off or something.
I Love Gerard Butler And Emmy Rossum, I Think Of Them As The Perfect Phantom And Christine. I Do Respect Previous Actors Though, Michael Crawford And Sarah Brightman, The Originals, Are Legends But Not Particularly The Best.
Also, I Came To Say That The Dubbing Between 2:13 and 2:20 is Fantastic (:
I do like Gerard as Phantom! His voice and acting was like he really is the angry phantom who wants nothing but Christine! But Michael's voice really lacked this anger and love. Sarah's Voice is annoying and Emmy's the best Christine!
Finally! I thought I was the only one to think this. I know I'll be skinned alive by the fandom, but Michael's voice lacks the darkness and gruffness I imagine for the Phantom... and Sarah's voice lacks the innocence, I guess...
You are so not the only one that thinks this. Just look around YT for Gerard Butler/The Phantom of the Opera. There is a lot about him and Emmie then Michael and Sara. I am so so so glad they did not do the movie. If it had sounded any thing like this in the theater I may have throun up my pop corn instead of inhailing it LOL

I hate sarah brightmans voice....it drives me insane...it sounds all nasally and horrible. I loved Gerard i think his voice was really gravelly and sexy. Ramin Karimloo in the west end now is the best phantom i think. Michael Crawford wasn't sexy enough.
You put it all so well. About Sara she is like a squiky mourse. I think Michael is good he has a very nice voice I have herd him sing other then the Phantom. But Gerard Butler is the best ever sexy like you said. Deep full of pastion. As he said He sounds like a a bad boy. So you are right
I really can't agree with people who say Sarah Brightman is the best Christine. I have nothing against her personally -- I liked her in "Repo!" and some of her solo stuff's not bad -- but come on.
She sings like she's got a mouth full of cock here, it's almost a parody.
Michael Crawford does have an angelic voice but I find it a bit too feminine. John Cudia is pretty much the perfect Phantom for me.
Gerard has so much emotion in his voice, but Michael is such a wonderful singer. And Sarah and Emmy are both awesome Christines. I think I like Gerard better, because he was the first Phantom I ever saw. Patrick is also a really good Raoul. I don't know who plays him in this one, but he's good.
Michael completely ruins this, he sounds like he's just singing normally no anger unlike Gerard who sings with emotion you can tell he's angry BUT NOT MICHAEL
The way I see it, I love Emmy's crescendos, and open sound, but I love Sarah's unique voice. :D
And I love how Gerry can get very scary at the end, but Michel's crazy-person laughter is gold. As for their voices, Michel's softness is soothing, and Gerry's deepness pulls you in. :D
Patrick and wot's-his-face kinda sound alike to me, but I perfer the original's. :D
Gerard and Michael are two completely different takes on Erik. I think both of them are brilliant in the role. Michael's voice is more sorrowful while Gerald's is more desperate. That's how I see it, anyway.
The way I see it is it all depends on the version. In the Stage play, They tried to make the Phantom more angelic. So Michael's voice is good for that because his voice is high and sounds angelic(ish). While the film went more with the book and made the Phantom what he is in the book, neither a phantom nor angel. He is simply a man. So Butler's voice makes sense because it is a darker, harsher tone. I may be interpreting it wrong but whatever.
Michael is the original phantom, without his brilliant performance there is a chance that Butler would never have had the chance to sing it. Plus Michael won the tony award for this, in my mind he will always be the phantom, though I do appreciate Butler's performance.
I think that Sarah has the 'better' (more musically trained and correct pitchwise) voice out of the two Christines, but I think that the voice that Emmy has fits the character of Christine better.
And Gerard and Michael; don't really have preference. I believe they both did the Erik justice, just in two different ways.
I read the book, I would say the stage adapation is different than the book and the movie was based around the play, so the book and the movie are going to be different!
Keep in mind Crawford isn't in charge of the tempo. This is the Original Cast Recording from the 80's, and the play and music has changed since then. Blaming Crawford for the slow tempo is like blaming him for singing the music of the night wrong (I've seen people complain about him not singing "turn your face away from the garish light of day" ).
I believe this is not a debate about Crawford or Butler, but rather a Tenor vs. Bass one. They are two different performances.
On the special disc that came with the movie they call Butler a Lyric-Tenor... Though he sounds like a Bari-Tenor to me but isnt a bass REALLY deep as in: Old Deuteronomy?
There's more to voice classification than range alone; however, you are correct. Generally speaking, bass voices stop sounding good around the first E above middle c. Butler can obviously go higher than that. Tenors are supposed to have lighter and more youthful voices. That is what I meant in my comparison.
Ah, I think I understand what you mean now. Im only just learning about the 'proper' way to sing, so I was just parroting what Ive heard others say. My actual lessons start this summer, hopefully Im decent.
No offense but the singers in the movie were pretty much on the verge of being terrible. However, Micheal Crawford is amazing! His voice is absolutly gorgeous and he puts so much emotion into the music it gives me chills. <3
yeah, if they combined the choire in the 2004 version and the younger looking sarah brightman (or even emmy!) and michael crawford and the raoul in 2004 it would have been better.
Everyone has different ways to interpret the roles^^ Their voices are both dominating, but they dominate differently and both make the Phantom pitiful yet scary.
thank you..... thank you... thank you,...... Anyone who says anything bad about Michael Crawford and the role of The Phantom (Erik) should be shot. Michael CREATED the role.. i know he wasnt the first, but he made it what it IS Butler wouldnt even know what to do with the role if it wasnt for Michael..... so again i thank you for your reply to that idiot
michael is wonderful, but he and gerard play the role of phantom in two completely different ways. gerry plays it in a more sexy, desperately misunderstood way. michael's phantom is sadder and more malicious--more like laroux's book. i like both phantoms in their own way.
Michael Crawford has the better voice but Gerard Butler puts more emotion into it. If you mixed them together you'd have the perfect Phantom lol. But of course, in a musical, whoever has the better voice is the better person for it. If Michael Crawford had a more emotional tone it'd be perfect.
Actually he did. Have a look at some of the final lair videos on my youtube(the ones Michael's last performance and Phantom Part Seventeen), then tell me he has no emotional tone.
the problem though is that in a musical the music is paramount --- gerard and emmy are great actors but without the singing to back it up, the whole point of the story falls alittle flat--- i mean the phantom is supposed to be hideous with a phenomenal voice whereas gerard is stumbling at best in his voice ( sorry baby) and is ridiculously cute, it just seems like in order to make a blockbuster hit, the magic of phantom got lost
I wish people would stop comparing the stage show to the movie... The cast was picked for completely different reasons. And so, the movie cannot be compared to the stage show. Yes, I prefer MC's and SB's voice. Yet I prefer Emmy Rossum and Gerry's acting.
The movie sucks. If you ever seen it live or actually listened to Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman sing it's obvious! Emmy Rossum is screechy and annoying and Gerard Butler just says thing loud and in an angry tone.
Thanks for explaining why it sucks to those who don't know. I agree totaly. Althought the whole movie is just messed up. I don't know where you saw it live but i saw it live in vegas and it was amazing expecaly when he is hanging off the chandeler witch also pisses me off why the hell would you move the part of the chandeler falling to later in the movie if it is to be basid off the play and no the novel.
Althought this is going to possibly have a sequal to it from a book that is sapost to be a sequal to the play witch says in the first chapter fuck all the books and the movies and hell fuck the play you probly just watched and had to go out and buy this book and this is what happen so screw everyone O_O i am dead serious. I just wish i could have seen MC playing the phantom he is just omg yay XD
sorry keep running out of room so why did they have to screw around it so i mean take as a fine example sweeney todd was a play and you can see the whole play on youtube then made into a movie and althought they did cut a lot of music it is a acceptable translation and basicaly the play is longer and well who doesn't love Ms. Potts.
at first it isn't that bad. But here is what you must do read the phantom of manhattan hell just the first two chapters of that book are at the piont of no return...then re watch the movie knowing they have set it up changed a few things just so they can make a squel that makes sence.that is more then likly why the backstory of the phantom that madem giry gives is beyond changed.that now in stead of being older man he is almost the same age is maybe a 10 year gap.
I third that! Anybody whos bothered to listen to Michaels incredibly expressive and beautiful voice or watch MCs live videos from Phantom(or who has seen Mike live)would know Michael has more feeling and emotion in his voice. Butler hurt my ears! There both good actors but Michael wins there to and since he has the awards I'm not the only one who thought so!
The Phantom has to have the voice of the Angel of music and Gerard Butler has the voice of an angry, off key metal singer who tries to sing musical/opera! He acts very good but his singing hurts my ears! I like this version.... Michael Crawford best Phantom EVER!
I love Gerard Butler as well as Emmy Rossum including their voice in the Phantom of the Opera.I understand your preference of Emmy, though I like both of them a lot.:)
i think gerard is better as the phanotm, he has the pain in his voice...and the extra edge...the one who is singing now is still good, biut i think gerard is better...he has that pain and sadness...
Think, michael crawford is a great singer. But for the phantom personally... I would prefer butler. Why? The voice is harder and I can feel the pain in it. crawford sounds to softly to me.
You did an amazing job of dubbing!! Although I vaguely knew of this story & its music, I only recently became familiar with it from the movie. ALL of these stars are excellent - very different, yet all effective and moving, which can never be taken away from any of them - and YouTube is a wonderful chance to learn of and appreciate all of their unbelievably magnificent performances!!
Cont'd...The last comment wasn't said in a angry or mean way to "laurair1963" so I apologize if you took it that way. I guess I was just trying to suggest to give Michael the same chance by at least watching some live clips of his before judging. I've seen the film once and the stage show live with Michael and other actors in the role and the fact that Michael still moves me 21 years later like know other man whos ever performed the role is a testament to how awesome he was!
Dear "laurair1963"...It's more then a little unfair to Michael or anybody else to judge someones performance, emotion wise, on a cast album compared to people you've seen live or in a visual movie. The fact that Michael was able to move people who listened the cast album and made them want to see him and the show live is a testament to how emotionally he was as the Phantom. Before judging him watch the live clips of his Final Lair, PONR and MOTN and tell me he isn't amazingly emotional. God Bless
I'm sorry, but my personal opinion is that Michael Crawford sounds too stiff and no personality or emotion thrown in. Sarah's voice is pretty. I believe that Gerard Butler threw more of himself in this part. I have seen Phantom in Vegas, and two different phantoms in NYC, one Howard (longest one doing it) and with John Cudia. I think John Cudia did it best cause he put some of the emotion of the movie into his part and seemed fresh. Howard's good, but I think he's bored with the part.
very good! i've thought about doing this to another song in pto but i've been busy. anyway i still like butler better than crawford, but its because i think phantom should have a deep voice, but crawford was really good.
Cont'd...Sorry again for sounding irratated but if you couldn't come on here and watch this video nuetrally then why watch. You can like who you want but to come on a video and get obnoxious on purpose and knowing you won't like the artist ahead of time doesn't make sense. Bravo to "phantomofopera91". You did a great job and I appreciate your effort!!!!
Dear "SweetAngelOfMusic94"...Butler sounds like a dying cow that knows only how to moan as opposed to singing and Emmy can't always stay on key. If you can sing as well as Michael or Sarah then I promise to quite laughing at your very biased and rude comments. If Butler or Rossum ever sell as many CDs or sell out concerts like Michael and Sarah then I promise to take your comments seriously. Sorry to sound so rude but you knew this was a dubbed video so why watch since you don't like MC or SB

Well work with the dubbing, but crawford sounds like a common schoolboy on school trip and sarah brightman sounds like an old woman hag. Gerry and Emmy 4EVER!!!!!!
I agree. I to saw michael onstage and made the mistake of going to see the movie and in all honesty Michael Crawford had more emotion then the film Phantom and definetly has a better voice. I'm not trying to say either guy was bad but Michael Crawford IS ABSOLUTELY THE MOST AMAZING ACTOR TO EVER PLAY THE CHARACTER. Again I'm not saying everybody else was bad...it's just that Michael was so awesome. He moved you physically, emotionally and with his wonderfully sensual and evocative voice.
I'm glad you guys seem to be enjoying this.. i did redub the entire movie (incuding redubbing all of the scenes on youtube)... i will get that uploaded as soon as possible!
It's amazing what kinda tech Phantom used in his lair considering the time frame it's set in. (about 1860s, right) I mean, trap doors, dropping ceilings, heavy gates rising at the pull of a lever, he's very clever to do all that
Michael projects terrific emotion and for the person who said they saw the movie and musical they never saw Michael in the musical so how the hell can they comment on a performance they never saw! Theres a damn good reason Michael is a multi award winning actor in this role. Try watching Michaels devastating Final Lair scenes or any of his other wonderful live scenes on YouTube with no bias and you'll see and hear what I mean. I looooove MCs sarcasm and pain in this recording...plus he can sing!
i think michael crawford has a divine voice, and he is best paired with lovely sarah brightman. but gerard butler obviously proyects more emotion than crawford does. dont misunderstand me, he is the best phantom ever!!!

I'm sorry but after watching the film and the musical, it seems you need anger and emotion and Crawford doesn't seem to have this. He's awful in my opinion.

"am i now to be prey for your lust of ....FFFFFLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH (sposed to be flesh, but she decides not to sing it :/ hmm)

I do like Gerard as Phantom! His voice and acting was like he really is the angry phantom who wants nothing but Christine! But Michael's voice really lacked this anger and love. Sarah's Voice is annoying and Emmy's the best Christine!
alissyaelena 2 years ago 2
Finally! I thought I was the only one to think this. I know I'll be skinned alive by the fandom, but Michael's voice lacks the darkness and gruffness I imagine for the Phantom... and Sarah's voice lacks the innocence, I guess...
melancholia05 2 years ago 3
You are so not the only one that thinks this. Just look around YT for Gerard Butler/The Phantom of the Opera. There is a lot about him and Emmie then Michael and Sara. I am so so so glad they did not do the movie. If it had sounded any thing like this in the theater I may have throun up my pop corn instead of inhailing it LOL

I hate sarah brightmans voice....it drives me insane...it sounds all nasally and horrible. I loved Gerard i think his voice was really gravelly and sexy. Ramin Karimloo in the west end now is the best phantom i think. Michael Crawford wasn't sexy enough.
andersonis1 2 years ago
You put it all so well. About Sara she is like a squiky mourse. I think Michael is good he has a very nice voice I have herd him sing other then the Phantom. But Gerard Butler is the best ever sexy like you said. Deep full of pastion. As he said He sounds like a a bad boy. So you are right
dracerick 2 years ago
I really can't agree with people who say Sarah Brightman is the best Christine. I have nothing against her personally -- I liked her in "Repo!" and some of her solo stuff's not bad -- but come on.
She sings like she's got a mouth full of cock here, it's almost a parody.
Michael Crawford does have an angelic voice but I find it a bit too feminine. John Cudia is pretty much the perfect Phantom for me.
ElvisLikesCash 2 years ago
Gerard has so much emotion in his voice, but Michael is such a wonderful singer. And Sarah and Emmy are both awesome Christines. I think I like Gerard better, because he was the first Phantom I ever saw. Patrick is also a really good Raoul. I don't know who plays him in this one, but he's good.
PhantomOfTheLibrary1 2 years ago
Michael has a good voice but I really hate his acting!
Is he actually acting at all?
It sounds like he's just singing normally and just being himself.
He's not himself, he's the Phantom!
Erik(Phantom) is meant to be a madman during the end of the story - very misunderstood madman but he also feels sad and angry all at the same time.
Gerard fits the Phantom perfectly and is doing exactly what he's supposed to do and that's filling Erik's character.
yellowcup87 2 years ago
Don't flame me for saying that. I did say Michael's voice was good, I just didn't like his acting.
It would be better if he had the amount of emotion Gerard had and sung with his voice.
yellowcup87 2 years ago 2
It's a cast recording which is more geared towards the singing element. his acting in the live show was much better
phantomofopera91 2 years ago
Yeah but Gerard's singing sucks.
backstreetsbev 2 years ago
Gerard's singing is not that bad. Seriously it isn't.
I think his acting is better than Michael's though.
I love Michael but it seems like he isn't putting enough emotion here.
This is not just a musical opera it's drama as well.

What are you talking about,
Micheal shows a lot of emotion. Micheal is the greatest phantom ever.
punkstoper 2 years ago 2
Erik would be way more epic if he was a bass more scary
ItachiUchiha2010 2 years ago
My preference:
Phantom: Michael Crawford completely.
Christine: Sarah Brightman's voice + Emmy Rossum's figure.
Raoul: Either one.
lordalessan 2 years ago 13
The way I see it, I love Emmy's crescendos, and open sound, but I love Sarah's unique voice. :D
And I love how Gerry can get very scary at the end, but Michel's crazy-person laughter is gold. As for their voices, Michel's softness is soothing, and Gerry's deepness pulls you in. :D
Patrick and wot's-his-face kinda sound alike to me, but I perfer the original's. :D
PHANTOMDEPPSPONGEBOB 2 years ago
Gerard and Michael are two completely different takes on Erik. I think both of them are brilliant in the role. Michael's voice is more sorrowful while Gerald's is more desperate. That's how I see it, anyway.
cardwitch91 2 years ago 5
I agree. Except I see Gerard as more one of Rage then desperate
DoggyWorld96 2 years ago 5
Yeah, I could go along with that too. :)
cardwitch91 2 years ago 2
The way I see it is it all depends on the version. In the Stage play, They tried to make the Phantom more angelic. So Michael's voice is good for that because his voice is high and sounds angelic(ish). While the film went more with the book and made the Phantom what he is in the book, neither a phantom nor angel. He is simply a man. So Butler's voice makes sense because it is a darker, harsher tone. I may be interpreting it wrong but whatever.
xht2839554 2 years ago 2
Michael is the original phantom, without his brilliant performance there is a chance that Butler would never have had the chance to sing it. Plus Michael won the tony award for this, in my mind he will always be the phantom, though I do appreciate Butler's performance.
broadwaylady22 2 years ago 4
You said it all!
lordalessan 2 years ago
For some reason, i think GB's voice suits this part better.
Idk, don't get me wrong, I think they're some parts in which MC does better and GB does better. I think they both did a wonderful job.
laliisx 2 years ago
I think that Sarah has the 'better' (more musically trained and correct pitchwise) voice out of the two Christines, but I think that the voice that Emmy has fits the character of Christine better.
And Gerard and Michael; don't really have preference. I believe they both did the Erik justice, just in two different ways.
I read the book, I would say the stage adapation is different than the book and the movie was based around the play, so the book and the movie are going to be different!
iluveacting13 2 years ago 4
I can't imagine micheal crawford as the phantom doing this sort of thing... kidnapping and killing...
babybotpobJB 2 years ago
Keep in mind Crawford isn't in charge of the tempo. This is the Original Cast Recording from the 80's, and the play and music has changed since then. Blaming Crawford for the slow tempo is like blaming him for singing the music of the night wrong (I've seen people complain about him not singing "turn your face away from the garish light of day" ).
I believe this is not a debate about Crawford or Butler, but rather a Tenor vs. Bass one. They are two different performances.
NichtOliver 2 years ago
On the special disc that came with the movie they call Butler a Lyric-Tenor... Though he sounds like a Bari-Tenor to me but isnt a bass REALLY deep as in: Old Deuteronomy?
SirSkimbleShanks 2 years ago
There's more to voice classification than range alone; however, you are correct. Generally speaking, bass voices stop sounding good around the first E above middle c. Butler can obviously go higher than that. Tenors are supposed to have lighter and more youthful voices. That is what I meant in my comparison.
NichtOliver 2 years ago
Ah, I think I understand what you mean now. Im only just learning about the 'proper' way to sing, so I was just parroting what Ive heard others say. My actual lessons start this summer, hopefully Im decent.

No offense but the singers in the movie were pretty much on the verge of being terrible. However, Micheal Crawford is amazing! His voice is absolutly gorgeous and he puts so much emotion into the music it gives me chills. <3
PoisonedHearts689 2 years ago 8
hehe at first i thought u were going to say the the singers in this video on the verge of terrible
phantomofopera91 2 years ago 2
yeah, if they combined the choire in the 2004 version and the younger looking sarah brightman (or even emmy!) and michael crawford and the raoul in 2004 it would have been better.
babybotpobJB 2 years ago
mmm i dont thin Crawford voice is "so" good
i cant feel the emocion in the lirycs,
yes, it is tru buttler screams sometimes instead of singing.
Also, Crawford Slows some parts, but to evaluate correctly tihs, t think we must watch the perfomance in live.
ikana13 2 years ago
Everyone has different ways to interpret the roles^^ Their voices are both dominating, but they dominate differently and both make the Phantom pitiful yet scary.
HingYok 2 years ago
Jesus Fucking Christ, how bad can Michael get??!
He really stinks at acting! His singing is ok, but he just puts NO emotion in anything!
Gerard I can feel his anger and depression at being mocked and desperate to keep Christine and kill Raoul.
He becomes a wicked madman onto the end and he totally fulfilled the Phantom's personality.
Michael's "HEELLL!" is just..ugh.
Sorry but I like Gerard better.
And I don't like Sarah.
boxachocolates7 2 years ago
His "Hell"? He sings. Butler grunts and growls. This is a cast recording which means more emphasis on the singing than the acting.

michael is wonderful, but he and gerard play the role of phantom in two completely different ways. gerry plays it in a more sexy, desperately misunderstood way. michael's phantom is sadder and more malicious--more like laroux's book. i like both phantoms in their own way.

phantomofopera91 2 years ago
Michael Crawford has the better voice but Gerard Butler puts more emotion into it. If you mixed them together you'd have the perfect Phantom lol. But of course, in a musical, whoever has the better voice is the better person for it. If Michael Crawford had a more emotional tone it'd be perfect.
LoganADavis 2 years ago 3

Stop comparing them!

The movie sucks. If you ever seen it live or actually listened to Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman sing it's obvious! Emmy Rossum is screechy and annoying and Gerard Butler just says thing loud and in an angry tone.
pojomojo42296 3 years ago
Thanks for explaining why it sucks to those who don't know. I agree totaly. Althought the whole movie is just messed up. I don't know where you saw it live but i saw it live in vegas and it was amazing expecaly when he is hanging off the chandeler witch also pisses me off why the hell would you move the part of the chandeler falling to later in the movie if it is to be basid off the play and no the novel.
RebelFounderOdogoo 3 years ago
Althought this is going to possibly have a sequal to it from a book that is sapost to be a sequal to the play witch says in the first chapter fuck all the books and the movies and hell fuck the play you probly just watched and had to go out and buy this book and this is what happen so screw everyone O_O i am dead serious. I just wish i could have seen MC playing the phantom he is just omg yay XD
RebelFounderOdogoo 3 years ago
sorry keep running out of room so why did they have to screw around it so i mean take as a fine example sweeney todd was a play and you can see the whole play on youtube then made into a movie and althought they did cut a lot of music it is a acceptable translation and basicaly the play is longer and well who doesn't love Ms. Potts.
RebelFounderOdogoo 3 years ago
I, personally, don't think the movie was THAT bad. But I deffinatley love MC & SB better.
ScattaBrainProduc 3 years ago
at first it isn't that bad.
RebelFounderOdogoo 3 years ago
Oh? I heard about the HUGE gap between Emmy Rossum & Gerard Butler.
ScattaBrainProduc 3 years ago
i am not sure about it. but i am talking about the age of the charators.
RebelFounderOdogoo 3 years ago
I third that! Anybody whos bothered to listen to Michaels incredibly expressive and beautiful voice or watch MCs live videos from Phantom(or who has seen Mike live)would know Michael has more feeling and emotion in his voice. Butler hurt my ears! There both good actors but Michael wins there to and since he has the awards I'm not the only one who thought so!
colinmcphan 3 years ago 2
The Phantom has to have the voice of the Angel of music and Gerard Butler has the voice of an angry, off key metal singer who tries to sing musical/opera! He acts very good but his singing hurts my ears! I like this version.... Michael Crawford best Phantom EVER!
elenifixa 3 years ago 3

Cont'd...The last comment wasn't said in a angry or mean way to "laurair1963" so I apologize if you took it that way. I guess I was just trying to suggest to give Michael the same chance by at least watching some live clips of his before judging. I've seen the film once and the stage show live with Michael and other actors in the role and the fact that Michael still moves me 21 years later like know other man whos ever performed the role is a testament to how awesome he was!
colinmcphan 3 years ago
Dear "laurair1963"...It's more then a little unfair to Michael or anybody else to judge someones performance, emotion wise, on a cast album compared to people you've seen live or in a visual movie. The fact that Michael was able to move people who listened the cast album and made them want to see him and the show live is a testament to how emotionally he was as the Phantom. Before judging him watch the live clips of his Final Lair, PONR and MOTN and tell me he isn't amazingly emotional. God Bless
colinmcphan 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but my personal opinion is that Michael Crawford sounds too stiff and no personality or emotion thrown in. Sarah's voice is pretty. I believe that Gerard Butler threw more of himself in this part. I have seen Phantom in Vegas, and two different phantoms in NYC, one Howard (longest one doing it) and with John Cudia. I think John Cudia did it best cause he put some of the emotion of the movie into his part and seemed fresh. Howard's good, but I think he's bored with the part.
lauralr1963 3 years ago
You also have to keep in mind that since its a cast recording, the idea was to sing the part and not act it. When done on stage he sings with emotion
