This version is soooo bad :( I love The cure, but their latest live performances are awful!!!! c'mon! this one of their most beautuful songs, why did they do this to it????
@MrMoodyHyadd : 4-tour was a bad decision made by Robert. Keyboards are essential to the Cure sound! Just imagine Disintegration or Head on the door or Kiss me kiss me... without the keyboards?! I can't!
Closedown or Plainsong without the keyboards?! Noooooo no no no.
@mrwica2: Only got a chance to see them twice, Wild Mood Swings Tour and 4-Tour. 4-Tour was very rockish with all the loud guitars..more like a rock concert then that Cure sound. I was somewhat disappointed. While it was great to see Porl, the lack of keyboards made them sound very rock and rollish.
@karentawn yes, nobody likes jason cooper, also is not a bad drummer, but boris was the "real cure drummer, anyway i think boris is not in the band from over 10 years...i am surpriese by your surprise...
Yeah believe me, I love Simon's bass being amped up even more than previously, but without Keyboards and lack of Porl, playing the lead, and yes, there is a lead part in disintegration, that Perry used to play throughout the song, you could always count on Perry to stay true to the album, and then amp it up with perfect emotive sound and feel, and I dont particularly like what Porl has done, or lacks doing in this song, and others live. yes he plays keyboard parts too, but, not impressed.
The Cure do two things fantastically - Precision and Emotion - Porl has none of these. He clearly HAD them, but after his tenure with Led Zeppelin and various other crap, he feels the need to funk up everything and ruin the vibe.
And Jason is nowhere near as bad as people are saying. He just has a poor choice in Snares, apparently.
I assume what you are referring to as being "funked up" in this song is the lead guitar line (which was originally played by keyboards). Porl is not playing the lead, he is clearly playing rhythm in this song, and he sounds perfectly fine. Aside from the way he is dressed, he is clearly not "funking up" anything. In fact, you can't really even hear him over the bass. The only guitar you can hear clearly in this song is Roberts' sporadic lead portions.
But inbetween and just like heaven he is also playing the keyboard parts!!! keep that in mind.
On the other hand.. have you heard inbetween days and just like heaven with those tapes running in the backgruound.. tapes full of crap percussion sounds.. all thanks to Jason.
again, the only guy ruining everything here is jason. Poor choice in snares???? he has one of the most expensive kits in the world! his snares are DW and even Ludwigs. Boris used Ludwigs but has better technique and more experience in studio and live sound equipment, like mics, triggers and all of that.
also his bass drum and toms can barely be heard! that sucks! just listen to Entreat and any bootleg from 1985-1992, and compare drum sounds.
Agree, LIL2511. The cure live have lost precision, emotion, and power, since turning to 4 piece in my opinion. Yes, they turn the amps up on the guitars even louder, but, Porl is not picking up the slack in my opinion, in fact, sounds sloppy, funky, and like really good cover band guitar player. Too much emphasis from Porl on funk, playing fast, and it doesnt work without keyboards to at least bolster the emotive/emotion. Jason, is good, but uses crap heads, and gear, but so does Robert now.
This video seems a bit out of sync?Or is it just me?
To be honest,I miss the keyboard in this song.
Nevertheless, this is a really good version and I was surprised to see how much emotion Robert put in his performance of it,this is a really powerful song and it's great to see they still have it after 20 smt years!
I don't see why everyone dislikes Jason Cooper. He is a perfectly capable drummer and has been with the band for long enough to earn some respect. He's got Roberts respect otherwise he wouldn't be in the band. I'm sick of all the negativity being thrown his way.
And I like the fact that the Cure can reinvent themselves post keyboards and still come out strong and on top of their game. They've got a killer sound.
I AGREE! The Cure without Keyboards is like Morrissey without something to CRY about! I think Roger should be with Robert just like Simon! It just sounds better!
what is it with the keyboards??? I mean, get over it!!! I love the way they sound like this 'cause the lack of keyboards gives Porl more space to show his unique style.
If Jimmy Page and Pete Townsend thought Porl Thompson was good enough to play in their bands (Page and Plant tour of 1995 & The Who at the Cotton Bowl in 1992), then I think he can play in The Cure band anytime Robert invites him.
Yes, that is right, Porl's sounds and technique belongs in 70's sounding bands, there is no doubt about this, Porl seems to massacre most live songs, in favor of making them funky, and playing hyperspastic in most songs. Porl is a master of the Wah Pedal, and very quick solo playing, but, his sound in my opinion, takes away from the cure's intricate chord and sequence structure, and emotion and melody are lost.
Uncle Fester was booked so they gigged with his brother. Tosser he is, I think. Ask his uncle Yoda. He'll enlighten you to the fact that he's average at best, skips half the fills, and frankly plays with no soul. Glad you think he's the bollox though...
I don't miss the keyboard because this way, Porl has more chance to do his thing. No extraño el teclado porque asi Porl se puede lucir con la guitarra.
Porl is just sitting there playing the same note throughout the whole song, and they sound worse live with the readdition of Porl and loss of Roger. Perry at least played spot on, and not hyper spastic in the middle of boys dont cry and lovesong. The cure sound sloppier than ever since they got rid of Roger, and Perry. Simon and Robert are the only ones holding the band together now. The only thing that the cure has done to change sound lately is up most songs tempos, and turn amps up more.
I can tolerate some Cure songs without keys... but not this. Keyboard's was a great loss. I miss Roger, he's a great musician and really fullfilled the band. By the way, I think Bob's voice sounds very out of shape and passionless.
On May 28, 2008 I had to make a big choice btw goin to the Cure or Iron Maiden. Seen the Cure twice once in '89 and '92 but never Iron Maiden...Iron won and attended was awesome.
In june this year I saw maiden on the 15th at the madison sq garden and saw the cure 5 days later and coldplay 2 days after the cure.
It was freaking expensive but it was my 22nd birthday!
On the maiden show I won the contest to go on stage on the chorus of heaven can wait. With the cure I was in first row and Porl gave me his guitar pick! It's framed now in my room!!
No tocaron esta en el MSG, estuve ahi el 24 de Junio 2008, y la pedia a gritos...otra q pedi fue Forest. Pero igual me diverti un monton flameando mi visible bandera de Peru. Se q RSX la vio, me vio , me canto~
You can't fuck with Porl, His guitar sound is a huge part of The Cure. Perry held it down, but you cannot fuck with porl, looking like a psychedelic frank black meets present day boy george..he's amazing. He should play guitar solos and posture, they are his parts, he owns it. Cannot wait for MSG show tonight!
Solos, posturing, and all that does not make songs better. His playing is very good, you can tell he's got a comfort with the songs that allows him to go off and do solos in the middle of every song. He however plays too funky, and relies on his wah pedal entirely too much. I dont think he has improved the cure's live sound, all they have done is amp up their volumes to push it harder, but the quality of playing is not all that impressive.
His wah pedal sound is part of the bands sound regardless of whether or not he relies on it or not. first hand I have seen them through various line up changes, and this was the best thus far. With Porl back, relying on wah wah, playing funk riffs...just like seeing...uhm.. the cure...
One of the better incarnations in my opinion, i agree, but funk, in the middle of Boys dont cry? and Disintegration, Porl's wah and funk, lessens the impact of many songs in my opinion. Not dynamic, or as emotional. His style works well on songs like Never Enough, Freakshow, us or them, and a few off of Wish, and Kiss Me, but other than that, please lay off that stuff.
Perry and Porl are totally uncomparible. Porl fucking rips, Perry not so much....was glad to see him gone from lead guitar. I would agree though that he could be used on keys....
this song has taken a turn for the worse in the last 10 years or so, ever since Robert stopped playing Bass VI on it and started playing guitar... ugh, there have been some macho guitar posturing solos that make me cringe...
But Simon is was, and always will be the MAN.
The backing keys are lame though, just get Perry back and have him play keys live as needed and guitar the rest of the time and everything will be PERFECT!
If Boris is in the band again, The Cure will be again everywhere as in the good old days. Wish was a number one in UK and number 2 in USA. Songs sounded a lot better. Boris is THE MAN!
Cure-fans between...Get over it, come over it. Seriously.
Yes Boris was great, but it have been what? Decades? Jason isn't that bad anyway, I always get a bit pissed when people complain about him (you didn't, I know). Me myself misses the keyboards a lot more :(
Awesome - thanks for posting these, only 2008 pro videos I've seen so far. I'm so happy to see that with Porl back they're playing the faster version of this a la Entreat version. Love that rhythm guitar part. With Perry this was kind of a snooze. If by some travesty the US shows finish off the main set with End instead of this, it would be a damn shame.
Porl plays little to no rythym, he is underwhelming on this song in particular compared to perry.. He is fiddling with his guitar, throughout, nothing else..
They all seem a little bored, but this is still the best arrangement of the song. Well, it's not exactly the same as the best arrangement (the version on Entreat with keyboards) but it's close.
Nothing will top the Prayer Tour but I still think Perry is boring.

There aren´t so many bands like The Cure and a few others..
So I think, we must be happy and glad - that our ears may heard music like this.
Look, what kind of music is everywhere around us todays???
It´s harder and harder to found a music - that´s left something in our hearts for a long long time.
The Cure is one of the best bands I ever heard. Doesn´t matter who they are.. They´re making a makes msterpiece music.
