the radio ads for the show were really misleading, though...my friends thought it was a concert, and that they were totally serious.

Yup the campiness is intentional- they make fun of boy bands. The choreography has been updated a bit and every actor plays the parts a bit differently but it has the same feel.

Where are they performing? That doesn't look like the Stages ...
