However capacitors from vintage electronics like very old radios and tube amps have a tendency to go "BOOOOOOM!!!!!!" when they let go, throwing metal shrapnel, paper, and foil all over the place.

Make sure the capacitors you use for explosion videos don't have lines on the top. If you don't have the lines, it blows up louder. The lines are weak spots in the can to allow pressure to escape less violently.

That would never happen in a tv or hi fi system anyway because of rectifiers.

Not if you replace the capacitor backwards. Then the rectifier will make sure it gets the WRONG polarity!
