Mythbusters' portrayal of magnetic entry is incorrect. In a real-world situation one would have ELECTROmagnets which can be switched ON or OFF. As long as you touch it to the metal before pressing ON, you won't make loud noises.

I hate it with Mythbusters half-asses their shit.

LOL, this is one of those Mythbusters segments where I'm almost suffocating with laughter. I do think that eletromagnets would've worked better. If they were kept off until they were in contact with the duct, there would be no clanging noise. However, we then wouldn't have this hillarity.

I think, if a really strong electromagnet with a stepless regulator for magnetic power was used instead, it'd be possible to do it very silently. You could even add a very, very thin layer of something soft in between.. or could you? I guess you'd need even stronger magnets then. Still not with a normal vent, though, but with the one they made to be strong enough to let the magnets stick, sounds plausible.

Wouldnt probably do any good even if you'd cover the magnets with something soft, those magnets are so powerfull that the magnets "pulls" itself against the vent with so much force and speed that it would still make the huge noise :) you'd have to be superhuman to control the magnets impact speed and force against the vent walls.
