Whoa. I owned all 3, and I usually didn't take sides, as all 3 systems were amazing......but the SNES version totally destroys the Genesis and NES version. Of course the NES can't truly compete with its more powerful successor though.

The SNES version was sped up personally I would get the NES for the retro look, but paying twice the price for the same game. I suppose if you have all three I would buy the SEGA I just don't own a sega.
Why you don't show the intros where it introduces the game characters? In my opinion that's very interesting. Especially for the Nes, knowing that it's an 8 bit system, they really push everything out of that console. Comparing the Nes with the other systems in terms of graphics and music it's obvious that the other consoles have more advantage in memory. In my opinion Nes is the best for this game. *****
nes was better all around. everything went with what a game should have. The nes surprisingly was the only one who had a tone for finishing off the boss. i find the music more attracting on the nes. it had music not only for the title but also the intro to the title . This is called detail, something maden nfl lacks.

Yeah most developers had no idea what they were doing with the Sega Graphics and sound Hardware. Sega, Treasure, Capcom,MCS Corp, Renovation, Compile, Technosoft, Konami, knew what they were doing, but not RARE. Rare just makes a crappy port of the NES version directly to Sega with horrid Sound integration. Oh well.
true snes didnt really utilized the genesis snes for the win maybe or genesis, nah nes FTW. the sound on the snes version is good but aggain warbly not straight up.same with battleotads on genesis horrible game.
Oh and SNES's infamous mode 7 (mario kart mode) might be totally lacking in the genesis, but some games out there were programmed well enough to achieve the same thing in software. Toy story on genesis springs to mind, it has an mario kart style stage and a doom style stage. no kidding.
I want to correct some of what johnnyponny4 says. First the genesis has a yamaha ym2612 synthesizer chip which sounds similar to a DX7 keyboard - used on countless 1980's hits. The z80 is just a controller and allows some master system backwards compatibility. Second the genesis high resolution mode was 320x448 but i've only ever seen it used on sonic 2 on the 2 player mode. The common mode 320x224 is HIGHER than SNES's common 256x224 mode.
SNES was underpowered was because it was made mainly for RPGs, which were far more popular in Japan,& generally have small sprites with little onscreen action, but good visuals & sound, something the SNES excels at. Luckily with cartridges, you can put more memory/processors in the cartridge itself to improve performance, something Nintendo did with S.M. Kart. That big alien at the end of S Contra 4? Really a background, one of SNES's 4 scrolling backgrounds, compared to Genesis' 2 b.grounds.
As I said, the SNES was more powerful than the Genesis, but underpowered for the amount of graphic info it had to display. It could display half the Genesis color palette onscreen at once (256) 512x448 pixels resolution, close to twice Genesis' blurry 320x 224. No wonder Nintendo's Final Fight game slowed down when there was more than 3 bad guys onscreen, with that high resolution and those enormous colorful sprites. Sega's Steets of Rage could have 10 baddies onscreen but still no slowdown.
The "WWF" game on the 32X is going to be better than the SNES for the obvious reason that the game is being run on more powerful hardware.
But, I was talking of the regular Genesis version of "WWF Royal Rumble," which has problems running correctly on Genesis consoles that don't use discrete chips for the sound (controller processor, FM synthesizer, and PSG).
Most mobo revisions for the smaller Genesis used a single chip that integrated some or all of the individual parts required for sound generation into one package.
This was done to cut manufacturing costs since there's less parts needed to buy and mount on the board for the same amount of functioning.
However, those boards can also have compatibility issues, though only with a very small handful of games.
Genesis soundchip: 8-bit z80 which had a slight buzz if you listened through headphones, while the SNES had a far superior CD-Quality sound. The Genesis had one more sound channel (9) but voices were very poorly reproduced. Listen to Super Castlevania 4, (amazing orchestral sound) or Super-Off Road (sampled guitar, mindblowing)The SNES had far higher sampling rate. The SNES mode 7 was overhyped, and only worked on backgrounds.Nintendo used it to make big (background) sprites with no slowdown.
There are two primary sound chips which are both controlled by the Z80; the Yamaha YM2612 Frequency Modulation (FM) chip and the Texas Instruments SN76489 Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) chip. The FM sound synthesis IC resembles the Yamaha YM2151 (used in Sega's coin-op machines) and the chips used in Yamaha's synthesizers.
There are 8 kilobytes of dedicated sound RAM available to the Z80. The Yamaha uses six FM channels, four operators each and runs at 7.67 MHz (7.61 MHz in PAL machines). The use of the digitized audio allows for stereo sound and is output only through the headphone jack on model 1 systems and through AV out on model 2 systems along with mono signal.
Didn't like the later Genesis models with no headphone jacks though, Sega was trying to make the Genesis inexpensive.
The Z80 is going to need memory when it receives instructions on how and when to control the sound chips.
As for the Genesis with the phones jack, there were basically two board layouts.
The older board has a heatsink on the upper left while the newer board was streamlined and did away with the heatsink.
And there were two versions of the older board; the first version does not display "Produced by or under license from Sega Enterprises" when you start up with a game.
There was also a version of the smaller Genesis that did not have the headphones jack which sported an actual Yamaha YM-2612 and not some LSI that integrated it with other chips.
This made that particular newer Genesis compatible with certain games that would otherwise exhibit problems on other newer consoles that did not have more discrete chips, such as sound inaccuracies on "Tommy LaSorda's Baseball" to problems with popping noises, freezing, and crashing on "WWF Royal Rumble."
No the SNES could move them just as fast, and the sprite motion was smoother and more realistic. To compare, look at Cody in Final Fight compared to Axel in Streets of Rage. Axel looked like he was moonwalking, Cody walked more realistically, was bigger and could punch way faster. No, SNES Street Fighter II Turbo had up to ten stars, but you had to put in a code. Street Fighter II The New Challengers was the one that only went up to four stars, on SNES anyway. I have both games.
Yeah, I think NES BattleToads was amazing with its 2-megabit MMC2 chip.Graphics and sound pushed NES to its limit. Developed by Rare who gave us Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day.But Battletoads and DDrag was an awesome game, great music, on SNES especially with 2-player sim. Rare forever
its the same story as any Genesis vs. SNES comparison: SNES has slightly sharper graphics with more colors but also slowdown and stiff control. SNES has music that sounds somewhat like real instruments and Genesis has a unique electro sound. Usually with initial impressions, the SNES looks better, but once you really start playing, the much faster Genesis processor lends to a better gameplay experience. The only games I can think of that were better on SNES are Mortal Kombat and T2 Arcade.
The SNES seemed as though it had a slow processor, but it had twice the internal memory and could do much more in one clock-cycle than Genesis.Internal memory is better indicator of power than processor power. The SNES was underpowered for the amount of info it had to display. But it had better sound, a custom 8-bit 8-channel sony soundchip. The Genesis had a 9-channel z80 with synth stereo.SNES St Fighter 2 Turbo was a way better game than Genesis version, try playing with 10 Turbo stars.
the SNES could handle bigger sprites, but couldn't move them as fast. So yeah, if you want to see a pretty picture you should play the SNES, but if you want "OMG WTF BBQ" amounts of action, you'll only get it on Genesis. The Genesis cranked out some amazing music when the sound programmer knew what they were doing, play midnight resistance, captain america, dynamite headdy, & gunstar heroes just to name a few. Only SF II SCE had 10 stars of Turbo, SF II Turbo had 4. Genesis was smoother too
of course NES version is the worst of them, cuz it's the most dated. Genesis/snes have equal graphics, though SNES has superior sound. I have no idea about gameplay cuz I'm not playing them...
I think Sega's version of Battletoads/Double Dragon was the best. The omission of the boss song in the SNES version is inexcusable. Plus the fact that Billy and Jimmy look like total wusses in that version.
im sorry but SNES beats sega in quality since day 1 of its release. Better sound quality graphics and game play. Only thing that killed sega was Sega CD biggest failure with all those g crappy addons to the genesis.
actually the 32x is what killed sega along with the 700 price tag of the sega saturn, which actually would have been an amazing machine if it wasn't so pricey. its graphics and cpu power blew the playstation and the n64 out of the water.
I always enjoyed the NES version of this game over the others. I'm not exactly sure why but it may have something to do with the NES graphics just looking better for both Jimmy and BIlly and the Toads.
I say SNES for the clear sound quality and graphics, then the NES for the music and I beat and own this game!. sega better graphics but the sound quality sucks
People are always saying "well the SNES had better graphics and what not." The N64 had better graphics than the playstation, however Sony had 1000 better titles than Nintendo. Same goes with sega, there games were the best.
SNES & NES were the best versions, SEGA sucked completely, NES had some pretty decent music and SFX, SNES had the best SFX of all platforms, SEGA gets negative reviews
I preferred the Mega Drive/Genesis Version the most because of the better music and better sound effects. The one i liked the least is the SNES version. Sure it has the best graphics but the music is the worst of the one of the three.
Sure, I prefer Nes (Nes, Snes)company, but, here Sega's version disappointed me. Sure, good graphics, but the atmosphere of a beat'em up game seems disappeared on this version.
FOR ME SNES VERSION THEN NES & THEN SEGA GENESIS

is battle toads and double dragon put together a real game?
Emulatorgamer 3 years ago
Both Toads & double dragon are from the same developer Rare Ltd.
Ericxtest 3 years ago
wow i didnt know this game was on the nes
magicbus333 3 years ago

Toy story on genesis springs to mind, it has an mario kart style stage and a doom style stage. no kidding.
jedw 3 years ago
I want to correct some of what johnnyponny4 says. First the genesis has a yamaha ym2612 synthesizer chip which sounds similar to a DX7 keyboard - used on countless 1980's hits. The z80 is just a controller and allows some master system backwards compatibility. Second the genesis high resolution mode was 320x448 but i've only ever seen it used on sonic 2 on the 2 player mode. The common mode 320x224 is HIGHER than SNES's common 256x224 mode.
jedw 3 years ago
SNES was underpowered was because it was made mainly for RPGs, which were far more popular in Japan,& generally have small sprites with little onscreen action, but good visuals & sound, something the SNES excels at. Luckily with cartridges, you can put more memory/processors in the cartridge itself to improve performance, something Nintendo did with S.M. Kart. That big alien at the end of S Contra 4? Really a background, one of SNES's 4 scrolling backgrounds, compared to Genesis' 2 b.grounds.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
As I said, the SNES was more powerful than the Genesis, but underpowered for the amount of graphic info it had to display. It could display half the Genesis color palette onscreen at once (256) 512x448 pixels resolution, close to twice Genesis' blurry 320x 224. No wonder Nintendo's Final Fight game slowed down when there was more than 3 bad guys onscreen, with that high resolution and those enormous colorful sprites. Sega's Steets of Rage could have 10 baddies onscreen but still no slowdown.

Is that opinion can explains also why "WWf wrestlemania the arcade Game" was better on Sega 32X than Snes platform? I guess so
Ericxtest 3 years ago
The "WWF" game on the 32X is going to be better than the SNES for the obvious reason that the game is being run on more powerful hardware.
But, I was talking of the regular Genesis version of "WWF Royal Rumble," which has problems running correctly on Genesis consoles that don't use discrete chips for the sound (controller processor, FM synthesizer, and PSG).
Watcher3223 3 years ago
Most mobo revisions for the smaller Genesis used a single chip that integrated some or all of the individual parts required for sound generation into one package.
This was done to cut manufacturing costs since there's less parts needed to buy and mount on the board for the same amount of functioning.
However, those boards can also have compatibility issues, though only with a very small handful of games.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
Genesis soundchip: 8-bit z80 which had a slight buzz if you listened through headphones, while the SNES had a far superior CD-Quality sound. The Genesis had one more sound channel (9) but voices were very poorly reproduced. Listen to Super Castlevania 4, (amazing orchestral sound) or Super-Off Road (sampled guitar, mindblowing)The SNES had far higher sampling rate. The SNES mode 7 was overhyped, and only worked on backgrounds.Nintendo used it to make big (background) sprites with no slowdown.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
Good opinion, now I can understand why Super Nintendo is superior that the original Sega Genesis.
If you can give an opinion like this on my vid about wwf wrestlemania, that will be helpful.
Ericxtest 3 years ago
The Zilog Z80 acted as a controller for the sound chips of the Genesis/Mega Drive.
The sound comes from the Yamaha YM-2612 and a Texas Instruments 4 channel PSG.
As for the "slight buzz," this is dependent on how the mobo was designed and built.
True 1st gen boards tended to have heavy hiss while the revised smaller board for the old-style Genesis had problems with distorted sound.
The newer style Genesis had sound that seemed lacking.
The JVC x'Eye and the CD-X has a very good sound.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
There are two primary sound chips which are both controlled by the Z80; the Yamaha YM2612 Frequency Modulation (FM) chip and the Texas Instruments SN76489 Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) chip. The FM sound synthesis IC resembles the Yamaha YM2151 (used in Sega's coin-op machines) and the chips used in Yamaha's synthesizers.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
I believe I just said that, sans specifying the exact model TI PSG and what the YM-2612 resembled.
And, again, the Z80 was a controller; it does not make the actual sounds themselves but controls the chips that do.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
Very good straight from Wiki:
There are 8 kilobytes of dedicated sound RAM available to the Z80. The Yamaha uses six FM channels, four operators each and runs at 7.67 MHz (7.61 MHz in PAL machines). The use of the digitized audio allows for stereo sound and is output only through the headphone jack on model 1 systems and through AV out on model 2 systems along with mono signal.
Didn't like the later Genesis models with no headphone jacks though, Sega was trying to make the Genesis inexpensive.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
The Z80 is going to need memory when it receives instructions on how and when to control the sound chips.
As for the Genesis with the phones jack, there were basically two board layouts.
The older board has a heatsink on the upper left while the newer board was streamlined and did away with the heatsink.
And there were two versions of the older board; the first version does not display "Produced by or under license from Sega Enterprises" when you start up with a game.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
There was also a version of the smaller Genesis that did not have the headphones jack which sported an actual Yamaha YM-2612 and not some LSI that integrated it with other chips.
This made that particular newer Genesis compatible with certain games that would otherwise exhibit problems on other newer consoles that did not have more discrete chips, such as sound inaccuracies on "Tommy LaSorda's Baseball" to problems with popping noises, freezing, and crashing on "WWF Royal Rumble."
Watcher3223 3 years ago
No the SNES could move them just as fast, and the sprite motion was smoother and more realistic. To compare, look at Cody in Final Fight compared to Axel in Streets of Rage. Axel looked like he was moonwalking, Cody walked more realistically, was bigger and could punch way faster. No, SNES Street Fighter II Turbo had up to ten stars, but you had to put in a code. Street Fighter II The New Challengers was the one that only went up to four stars, on SNES anyway. I have both games.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
The NES one was the best, including the music.
MikeGartner 3 years ago
Yeah, I think NES BattleToads was amazing with its 2-megabit MMC2 chip.Graphics and sound pushed NES to its limit. Developed by Rare who gave us Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day.But Battletoads and DDrag was an awesome game, great music, on SNES especially with 2-player sim. Rare forever
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
its the same story as any Genesis vs. The only games I can think of that were better on SNES are Mortal Kombat and T2 Arcade.
neogeon 3 years ago
The SNES seemed as though it had a slow processor, but it had twice the internal memory and could do much more in one clock-cycle than Genesis.Internal memory is better indicator of power than processor power. The SNES was underpowered for the amount of info it had to display. But it had better sound, a custom 8-bit 8-channel sony soundchip. The Genesis had a 9-channel z80 with synth stereo.SNES St Fighter 2 Turbo was a way better game than Genesis version, try playing with 10 Turbo stars.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
the SNES could handle bigger sprites, but couldn't move them as fast. Genesis was smoother too
neogeon 3 years ago
of course NES version is the worst of them, cuz it's the most dated. Genesis/snes have equal graphics, though SNES has superior sound. I have no idea about gameplay cuz I'm not playing them...
Zeldafoo9 3 years ago
I think Sega's version of Battletoads/Double Dragon was the best. The omission of the boss song in the SNES version is inexcusable. Plus the fact that Billy and Jimmy look like total wusses in that version.
hexkwondo 3 years ago
snes and sega are neck in neck for the graphics in this game but in sound, snes takes it.
pokemonjason6695 3 years ago
im sorry but SNES beats sega in quality since day 1 of its release. Better sound quality graphics and game play. Only thing that killed sega was Sega CD biggest failure with all those g crappy addons to the genesis.
rollen01 3 years ago
Have you seen my wwf wrestlemania video about the platforms versions?
Ericxtest 3 years ago
actually the 32x is what killed sega along with the 700 price tag of the sega saturn, which actually would have been an amazing machine if it wasn't so pricey. its graphics and cpu power blew the playstation and the n64 out of the water.

I always enjoyed the NES version of this game over the others. I'm not exactly sure why but it may have something to do with the NES graphics just looking better for both Jimmy and BIlly and the Toads.

People are always saying "well the SNES had better graphics and what not." The N64 had better graphics than the playstation, however Sony had 1000 better titles than Nintendo. Same goes with sega, there games were the best.

Nes has a cool retro feel, especially the bleepy sound.
SNES fans always malign the sega's sound and low colour pallette, but im my view the sega looks and sounds great.

SNES & NES were the best versions, SEGA sucked completely, NES had some pretty decent music and SFX, SNES had the best SFX of all platforms, SEGA gets negative reviews

yeah, segas a good system... but sometimes the sound just made me wanna puke for some games, seriously, it sounds scratchy, all the time...

I preferred the Mega Drive/Genesis Version the most because of the better music and better sound effects. The one i liked the least is the SNES version. Sure it has the best graphics but the music is the worst of the one of the three.
Sarato 4 years ago
Sure, I prefer Nes (Nes, Snes)company, but, here Sega's version disappointed me. Sure, good graphics, but the atmosphere of a beat'em up game seems disappeared on this version.
