Omg....ur topic is one point I totally agree with u :) my hair is honestly as nappy as urs I use to hate it thus I ave had a perm for as long as I could recall. But recently I have decided to go back to being natural. And guess what I am lovin -3 -3 my naps regardless.
Totally agree with the message. I confess that I react the same way to others who describe their hair as kinky when CLEARLY their hair is full of huge spirals and curls and it would bother me. My hair looks like yours so I feel I learn better from vids like yours and others alike. But you are right when you and AfrikanHairGod say that even tho two heads of hair may look exactly alike does not mean that the hair will react to products and styling the same.
Very good video, I think I might have felt the same way at some point, my hair is kinky but I do see that there are women with hair a lot kinkier than mine, that's what makes being black and natural interesting, the diverisity in our hair is like no other race
love this vid and I agree. I used to get mad when folks would say their hair was nappy when to me it clearly wasn't. I'd be like girl you dont know ISH about some nappy hair! I use to think that straighter was better but now I think natural hair is much better because we have more options. We can wear a bush or we can have curls. We can have a curly bush or we can wear it straight. No one else can do that as easily! Long live the naturalistas! :-)
andre but other folk - started to attach a value system to the numbers. That's when a person who had straight hair, but valued kinky hair decided to call her hair kinky, a person with kinky hair, but valued curly hair wud call her hair curly, etc. People can describe their hair however they like. The problem starts when, based upon their emotions, they give an inaccurate description as part of hair advice and tutorials. This can cause the recipients of this mis-information a lot of trouble.
Hi. I think that people are beginning to spend too much time trying to be politically correct and/or subscribing to a description of their hair based upon their emotions as opposed to what their hair type really is. Personally I admire andre walker because he was able to offer a system, the purpose of which was no more nor any less than to allow a person to read or watch a vid, and have some idea as to whether another's hair was straight, curly, kinky, etc. The problem started when folk - not
@whoissugar Thanks! and yea, I use my former thoughts as the titles of these vids, like "too nappy to go natural" and "I have to wear weave" so I know how it may seem at first look. I've come a lonnnnng way since 09 when I cut my hair lol. Marcus Garvey's quote "Don't remove the kinks from your hair, remove them from your mind" is so dead on because it took me a while to do the latter :)
@Keeya27 aww Thanks! and girl I love frequent commenters because I get to know you all in a sense and it feels like we're just sippin around a table, drinking some coffee and chatting LOL :)
Girl PU'LEASE it's all nappy cuz it all has a coil regardless... just like we have all diff skin types and heights and weight the same applies to hair....u can't tell someone else they're not nappy who are to say they're not....lol
I confess that I've also shared summa these thoughts lol. i wanna hear ur thoughts on hair typing. What is the difference between 4b and 4c in ur opinion. Maybe u can address that in ur vid.
another great video and i love hearing your thoughts and how you've developed. Natural hair really is diverse and individual to everyone like you said.
(continued) with our Natural hair journeys....some people, no matter how kinky have a inner struggle and a physical struggle..I love how being on a Natural Journey can definitely help you grow and realize some things are based off of opinions of our own;-) Lets keep growing! LOVE YA KONFESSIONS KILLA KHAM!LOL...You, Keisha, and Sunshine are women who TELL THA TRUTH!;-) I adore you all!Take Care
Wow, Hi Kham! This is so awesome you said that! My Aunt said to me yesterday that she hates Andre's chart because she feels she is a 4G!LOL...I used to get agitated when I seen myself struggling with my hair and I would see women with finer hair and hear them say, This hair is a struggle to girl! I would roll these eyes soooo hard, I could have feel asleep!LOL..And I felt like, I was a veteran, never had a perm and my mom struggled to keep my hair this way!LOL...Soo we gotta becareful and grow
LOL your grandma's Jamaican accent! luvs it! Lol hey killakham! It's your girl PHY-Lish! I love your channel. Just repped you on my new video. Check it out and Subscribe! :)
You rock Khambria! Love your videos and the honesty and pure candidness of explanations. I too have watched vids on YT with people claiming "kinky" and have been frustrated. Like you I have come to realize that all our hair is not created equal or the same. With that in mind I have come to love and appreciate "my hair". Much love and keep doing what you do!
Great vid! I think trying to classified our hair texture by a hair system makes us lean twas this misconception by not accepting fully that a Kink is a Kink, and a Curl is a Curl? So therefore, the phycological mind wants to lean twas curly because it's better texture or easily managed vs Kinky, considered to be less manageable or so call too nappy. See where this is going?.....So at the end of the day one just has to completely embrace what-is-NATURALLY there. ✌
@gladeemarie exactly! whether kinky, curly, or straight whatever naturally grows out of one's scalp is perfect for them and should be appreciated and embraced :)
So true! But I can relate to you so much! I never thought I felt that way at all until like 4 months ago when I saw a blonde girl on youtube with moderately WAVY, it wasn't even that wavy but it was thick & she had a lot of it, call her hair kinky. I was in shock and surprised myself at how upset I got! It bothered me for a sec like: "please don't trivialize the detangling struggle of someone with truly kinky hair!" but I got over quick & kept my opinion to myself. I agree you gotta let ppl be
@TupacAmaru4Life I actually have one up, it's called "Piercings and Pain"... I talk about my tattoos in my 5 random facts video but basically I have the one on my right shoulder that always shows, courage on my back left shoulder, the Adinkra symbol "Nyame biribi wo soro" in my ear and "beautiful life" on my wrist which will be covered with something else soon :)
kinky and curly are the same thing... a curl is hair with a "kink" in it making the hair curl instead of staying straight... it simply means that the protein strand bends at some point and is weak there. the tighter the curl the more "kinks" you have...
kinky and curly are the same thing... a curl is hair with a "kink" in it making the hair curl instead of staying straight... it simply means that the protein strand bends at some point and is weak there. the tighter the curl the more "kinks" you have...
@oshea90220 I've heard that before and I totally understand that they both result from bends in the strand, but by nature curly hair and kinkier hair have different properties that affects dryness, causes different degrees of shrinkage, and just in general have different care needs so I personally see the difference between the two.
Andre was like some of y'all are off the chart. He just gave up and was like get relaxer. I feel he did just that. I believe it was a good start or guide to branch off from. We wouldn't have anything to go by to describe our hair without it. As you have stated in your vid, kinks can start a wave, curl, or a coil at any degree. The kinkier the better because you have more styling options. Folks don't see it that way. Shoot, you can do any style and it'll hold natural or straightened.
@zheahra it was a start and proves itself somewhat useful in our community, but his system was like that first impression that leaves a bad taste in your mouth lol... I definitely think he should've put some more categories in thr type 4 section and he should't be so quick dish out his "just chemically treat it" advice, it's insulting! and so true, I can do so much with my hair, love the diversity of kinks
This was a really well versed video I like the point you made when you said my hair is not the standard for kenky loooved it :)
