We don't watch sports in our home. Which is like a crime here in this state! But, I am really glad we don't. Because when the first time my daughter saw "Chief Wahoo" of the Cleveland Indians she looked at me so shocked. Then she said "Mom is that supposed to be a Native American man?"

I quietly said, "Yes."

"That is so mean. Why would they make fun of us like that?"

Well, what should've I told my child? Schools need mascots?

Ive grown up relatively close to reservations all my life and not once have i ever thought that an Indian was a savage or looked like the way they appear as mascots. @SidePocket40s Yes, that may not be a big deal the way you say it. However, it is much a big deal, it's a stereotype, it's racist and it is dishonouring. Why a mascot? Those goofy looking things. Why a sports team? Where hate messages, and violence occur? It's a wrong influence, when a person looks at a native person, they expect them the exact same thing that appears on the logos, and mascots. They except them to be archaic looking, savage behaviour etc. It's an abomination. And that's not it.

We had a "brave" as our high school mascot, which was ridiculous, because in the Northwest US, "braves" (in the native American sense) didn't even exist, and CERTAINLY there were no pimply white boys in feathered headdresses dancing around in any of the tribes around here.

We are the warriors at my school, and our mascot is Chief Win-em-all. We also have a saying, "Can't stop the chop" cuz we do this one theme song for our school.

Why on earth would the Cherokee Nation endorse a dancer who does not dance in Cherokee regalia, but plains Fancy Dance regalia. Do you mean the federally recognized Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma? Or, do you mean an unoffical Cherokee group in Texas?
