Actually, any bolt-action rifle up to 12.7mm (.50 caliber) is A-OK. Semi-automatic rifles are pretty much frowned upon in some states and in most they're alright to have. Once you exceed certain features, caliber or action then you're into a massive legal quagmire that is in no way uniform from state to state.
