What is really impressing is that 60 years before Japan was still in Middle Age with swords and Samurai while Britain was the First Industrial Power in the World. Japanese Navy in 1941 was the 3rd in the World (French the 4th, Italian 5th, Germans had mostly U-Boots),British the 1st (soon America became the 1st). Japanese Fleet had 10 Battleships (Yamato-class was the most powerful in the World) and 8 Carriers, technologically as good as British and Americans (but without radar).
So in a "1 vs. 1" war British Empire-Japan WITHOUT ALLIES (USA, China and later Soviet Union) the British must be ready to face a war they had NEVER fought against any other foe and could not win -they could have reached a compromise losing some positions in exchange for peace and keeping India and Australia that the Japanese could not invade.
There were very few Royal Navy's ships in the Pacific and Indian Ocean, mainly old and when British sent their 2 best Battleships, Prince of Wales and Repulse they were sank in a single blow by Japanese bombers without even seeing the enemy. The ENTIRE Royal Navy would have needed to fight the Japanese Navy, and still the British had to be ready to the idea of losing half (half?) of the Fleet and dreadful human casualties to reach a stalemate.
Even losing their ships the Japanese would have continued the fight as Kamikaze. Their Army, however, was badly equipped, tanks artillery and machine guns were mediocre imitations of the Europeans, they were simply a mass of ferocius soldiers with bayonets and swords and total disregard for death, with the idea that "nothing existed BUT HONOUR". A Japanese soldier coming back defeated would have been utterly disgraced and many suicided in the most cruel way (Seppuku) after the capitulation.
One can, MUST detest the Japanese for their ruthlesness and insane fanatism, still I don't find in any other people of Earth, nor Russians Germans British Americans etc., such sacrifice for their country. Japanese were really "over the toughness".

What is really impressing is that 60 years before Japan was still in Middle Age with swords and Samurai while Britain was the First Industrial Power in the World. Japanese Navy in 1941 was the 3rd in the World (French the 4th, Italian 5th, Germans had mostly U-Boots),British the 1st (soon America became the 1st). Japanese Fleet had 10 Battleships (Yamato-class was the most powerful in the World) and 8 Carriers, technologically as good as British and Americans (but without radar).

So in a "1 vs. 1" war British Empire-Japan WITHOUT ALLIES (USA, China and later Soviet Union) the British must be ready to face a war they had NEVER fought against any other foe and could not win -they could have reached a compromise losing some positions in exchange for peace and keeping India and Australia that the Japanese could not invade.

There were very few Royal Navy's ships in the Pacific and Indian Ocean, mainly old and when British sent their 2 best Battleships, Prince of Wales and Repulse they were sank in a single blow by Japanese bombers without even seeing the enemy. The ENTIRE Royal Navy would have needed to fight the Japanese Navy, and still the British had to be ready to the idea of losing half (half?) of the Fleet and dreadful human casualties to reach a stalemate.

Even losing their ships the Japanese would have continued the fight as Kamikaze. Their Army, however, was badly equipped, tanks artillery and machine guns were mediocre imitations of the Europeans, they were simply a mass of ferocius soldiers with bayonets and swords and total disregard for death, with the idea that "nothing existed BUT HONOUR". A Japanese soldier coming back defeated would have been utterly disgraced and many suicided in the most cruel way (Seppuku) after the capitulation.

We had 459.000 dead (Britain: 450.000), all cowards? We did not have shoes, we had mules, you had tanks.

Sorry for my stupid words, I have no doubts the British have always fought well and are first class soldiers, but Britain is far from Japan and could not commit big forces while still fighting Germany. In a "1 vs. 1" British Empire-Japan I think you would have inflicted defeats to the Japs but to invade Japan was beyond British possibilities -and also beyond Americans, if not with milions dead that both couldn't substain.

Japan also later paid tribute to the Argyll and southern highlanders for their magnificent jungle fighting, which they had never encountered before.

The 3to1 as you put it is true but a lot of the commonwealth soldiers Indians, even the Anzacs arrived at singapore not properly trained, but British regiments fought ferocious rear guard actions against the japanese. But General percival, and complacency i believe caused this disasterious defeat.
