They stopped making them with the PS2 chipset onboard in order to lower costs of the PS3. It probably helped them a lot and considering the PS2 still sells pretty well for having 120 million sold around the world already, what's the point in losing more money on the PS3 when you can still profit off the PS2 and make the price of the PS3 more attractive in the process?

@CidTheNinja Because PS2 is still seeling units, marketing has no intention on losing numbers on whole systems + games (99$ +) just to accomodate their consumers who have chopped out big bucks on a PS3 system, games, and accessories (go figure). Why not rake it all in? in doing this, no one (mainly sony) loses out lol.

The online for PS3 is free because it is not as good as Xbox Live, you get what you pay for, people who buy a PS3 buy it because they are to poor to pay for online and to poor to buy a wifi.
